A twin-engine training aircraft crashed into a warehouse at 5300 Allen K Breed Highway in Lakeland, Florida, on the morning of January 22.The accident happened at around 10 a.m. after the plane departed from Lakeland Linder Regional Airport. The crash caused an explosion and fire.
A student and an instructor were aboard the plane when it crashed; both of them were killed. They were later identified as 41-year-old Gregory Todd Geng from Hudson and 62-year-old Terry Lee Butt of Winter Haven.
There was no one inside the building at the time of accident. The warehouse belongs to Key Safety Systems, a designer, developer and manufacturer of automotive safety systems.
The plane was a Piper Apache registered to Tailwheels Inc., of Lakeland.
The NTSB and the FAA are investigating.

Why: The 641-hour private pilot and passenger were departing on a 155-nautical mile night cross-country flight. The tower controller heard a weak transmission that she could not completely understand, but did hear the words “engine” and “power.” The controller asked the pilot to “say again”, but there was no response. She again asked, “say again” and the pilot transmitted, ” I’m going down.” There were no further communications from the pilot. impacting the ground, the airplane cartwheeled. 50 feet wide. Witness reports of the airplane’s flight path along with the wreckage distribution path were consistent with the pilot’s attempt to return to the airport. A Cessna 182 plane crashed off Big Creek Airstrip in Valley County, central Idaho, at 8:30 a.m. on June 29.The pilot, Jay Minor, 71, from Oregon, was the only person on board. He suffered multiple life threatening injuries and was transported by air ambulance to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.
Other aircrafts in the area informed Arnold Aviation about the crash, who subsequently notified the Valley County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Valley County officials nine people have died in six aircraft crashes over the past year in the county.
