What: de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver en route from Pitt Meadows to Okanagan Lake Where: Brenda Mines When: May 13, 2012, 6:45 p.m Who: three aboard, three fatalities Why: The plane had taken off from Pitt Meadows airport and was en route back from Okanagan lake when it went down in a wooded area below Highway 97C about seven kilometers west of the Brenda Mines Road intersection. There was a fire at the scene. Witnesses say the plane was headed toward “Peachland” possibly looking for a landing site toward Merritt when it went down.
According to the NTSB, the accident site is about ten minutes out of Kelowna.
A Cormorant helicopter and a Buffalo airplane, the coroner, B.C. Ambulance, Kelowna Fire Department and Kelowna RCMP responded to the scene. The plane caught fire.
Pilot Colin Moyes, 52, and passengers Peter Keate, 81 and Inez Keate, 79 have been identified as the crash victims. The pilot had his future in-laws in the cabin. His wedding would have been June 23. He leaves behind his 11 year old son. Moyes is also survived by his fiancee and her two children. A memorial is scheduled at 2 p.m., May 27, at North Vancouver’s Pinnacle Hotel.

What: Privately owned Glasair Aviation “Sportsman 2+2” plane en route to a fishing trip on Lake Klemka Where: Pipmuacan Reservoir in the Saguenay region When: Sunday August Who: Carol Tremblay, 56, and Nathalie Cote, 44, Why: The couple had decided to go fishing on Lake Klemka, and flew there on the Sportsman configured with floats. They landed on the Pipmuacan Reservoir and were checking for directions when the plane started letting in water. They donned their life jackets and swam (for an hour) for the island. Tuesday they swam from the island to the reservoir and walked till they found a cabin where they found a battery, which enabled them to light-signal the helicopters searching for them.
Joint Co-ordination Rescue Centre in Trenton, Ont., recovered them shortly at 9 p.m. on August 31.

So many crashes end badly, it is a real pleasure to hear of survivors who walked away—in this case, swam away—from a downed plane. Their fishing trip turned out to be, not a tragedy, but simply rather more of an adventure than they had anticipated.

What: Acklins Blue Company Airways Charter Cessna 402 en route from Nassau to San Salvador Where: Lake Killarney, New Providence Island Bahamas When: Oct 5 2010 12:20pm. Who: Eight Bahamian men aboard, 8 fatalities Why: Not long after takeoff, the plane came down in Nassau’s Lake Killarney just east of the airport. The plane was substantially damaged on impact with Lake Killarney. There were no survivors. Chief Pilot Capt Nelson Hanna and co-pilot Devin Storr went down with the plane. Sound technician of Visage (and son of CN and Evangelist Williams) Nat Williams, was also onboard. BEC technician, Cory Farquarson, set setup technician, Devin Storr, Sasha Mildor, Lavard Curtis and Delon Taylor were also aboard.

LATAM Airlines flight JJ-8081 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Brasilia, Brazil, on July 23rd.
The Airbus A350-900 plane heading from John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, to Sao Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport, Brazil, was diverted due to issues with the fuel leak detection system.
The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
