Will Boeing Switch to Electrical Inquiry?

    Here’s what is bothering me:

It’s no secret how planes are tested before they are released, to the very extreme so how did this electrical problem issue by the testing? Is my favorite plane manufacturer taking short cuts in quality control?

The Japan Boeing 787 Dreamliner was delivered on Dec. 20 and had only flown 169 flight hours and 22 flights when one of its two lithium ion batteries caught fire.

Is the investigation going to turn from the battery to the problem referenced by the whistleblower?

Battery found not at fault by Safety Investigators in JAPAN

But is GS Yuasa really off the hook?

    Battery questions:

    • If the battery was too hot, why didn’t it burn up on hours 1-169?
    • If the battery failed, what caused it to catch fire on the 22nd flight? Why that flight?
    • If the battery (which is a backup system replacing post flight hydraulics) only operates on the ground and is only engaged on the ground, why are flights grounded? If the battery is only at use on the ground, is it an actual flight risk or a post-flight risk?
    • Is the solution going to be simply going to the other type of lithium ion battery (nickel metal-hydride technology), or will components or the whole system be replaced?
    • Was this simply a GS Yuasa quality control failure, a batch of bad batteries manufactured by GS Yuasa of Japan in September 2012?

The entire 787 fleet is grounded. Replacing the battery system might be a “quick” fix but certification could last a year.

A large format battery can generate heat faster than it dissipates.

Is venting the battery and monitoring the vents a viable temporary solution that could keep the planes in the air until a system alternative has been certified within the year?

The current batteries are “prone to spontaneous combustion due to ‘organic electrolyte which makes it volatile and flammable.'”

Boeing NewGen Tanker Win Would Bring 580 Jobs, $30 Million to New York

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 19, 2010 — The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] today announced that the state of New York will benefit from an estimated 580 total jobs and generate an estimated $30 million in annual economic impact if the Boeing NewGen Tanker is selected as the U.S. Air Force’s next aerial refueling aircraft.

Boeing submitted its proposal July 9 to replace 179 of the Air Force’s 400 Eisenhower-era KC-135 aircraft. The Air Force is expected to award a contract in November.

“Boeing’s New York workers are among the most talented anywhere in the world, which is why we’re honored to have them as members of the NewGen Tanker team,” said Mark DeVoss, Supplier Management director, Boeing Tanker Programs. “Together with tens of thousands of Boeing employees across America, New York workers will provide the U.S. Air Force with the most capable, survivable, combat-ready tanker aircraft at the lowest cost to the American taxpayer.”

New York manufacturers ready to produce critical components on theNewGen Tanker include:

    • AVOX Systems, Lancaster
    • B/E Aerospace, Holbrook
    • BW Elliott Manufacturing Co., Binghamton
    • Cox & Company, Plainview
    • Ducommun AeroStructures, Coxsackie
    • EDO Corp., Bohemia
    • Ellanef Manufacturing, Corona
    • Flightline Electronics Inc., Victor
    • Moog Industrial Controls Group, East Aurora
    • Parker Hannifin, Smithtown
    • Safe Flight Instrument Corp., White Plains
    • Telephonics, Huntington
    • WS Wilson Corp., Port Washington.

Currently, Boeing has 85 employees in New York and works with nearly 732 suppliers/vendors, delivering a total $871 million in annual economic impact.

The NewGen Tanker is a widebody, multi-mission aircraft based on the proven Boeing 767 commercial airplane and updated with the latest and most advanced technology. Capable of fulfilling the Air Force’s needs for transport of fuel, cargo, passengers and patients, the combat-ready NewGen Tanker will meet or exceed the 372 mandatory requirements described in the service’s final KC-X Request for Proposal released Feb. 24.

The NewGen Tanker will be made with a low-risk approach to manufacturing that relies on existing Boeing facilities in Washington state and Kansas as well as U.S. suppliers throughout the nation, with decades of experience delivering dependable military tanker and derivative aircraft. Nationwide, the NewGen Tanker program will support approximately 50,000 total U.S. jobs with Boeing and more than 800 suppliers in more than 40 states.

The Boeing NewGen Tanker also will be more cost-effective to own and operate than a larger, heavier tanker. It will save American taxpayers more than $10 billion in fuel costs over its 40-year service life because it burns 24 percent less fuel than the competitor’s airplane.

Boeing has been designing, building, modifying and supporting tankers for decades. These include the KC-135 that will be replaced in the KC-X competition, and the KC-10 fleet. The company also has delivered four KC-767Js to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force and is on contract to deliver four KC-767As to the Italian Air Force.

More information on Boeing’s NewGen Tanker, including video clips and an interactive tour of the aircraft, is available at www.UnitedStatesTanker.com. For more information on joining the company’s efforts, visit www.RealAmericanTankers.com.

Statement of American Airlines in Response to Sabre’s Actions

FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 5, 2011 / — American Airlines today received notice from Sabre that it has taken a set of punitive actions against the airline and its customers, despite the fact that American has met all its obligations and continues to work in good faith with Sabre.

The actions, which include biasing its shopping displays, are anti-consumer, anti-competitive and harmful to its subscribing agents.

Sabre’s actions are discriminatory and patently inconsistent with both its contractual obligations and its professed goal of ensuring full transparency for the benefit of consumers and travel agents. In contrast, the actions only serve to protect Sabre’s market position and attempt to force airlines and travel agencies to rely exclusively on its legacy systems that only lead to higher fares and fewer choices for consumers.

American is committed to working with all efficient distribution channels, including traditional travel agencies, online travel agencies and global distribution systems

American Airlines and American Eagle fares and schedules – including all international and domestic classes of service – are widely available through a number of outlets, including American’s own website, AA.com, which features our Lowest Fare Guarantee, as well as through American’s reservations agents, thousands of travel agencies in locations worldwide, online travel agencies such as Priceline.com and metasearch engines such as Kayak.com.
