What: Vueling Airbus A320-200 en route from Paris Orly Airport to Alicante Spain Where: Paris When: Aug 5th 2009 10h36 Who: 169 passengers Why: After boarding but prior to takeoff, the Airbus’s right engine caught on fire. The official statement said that “the fire began when the aircraft was in “pushback” phase, the taxi procedure for towing the aircraft from loading up by a bar connected to a tractor trailer.”
Passengers debarked via slides. There were eight injuries reported; it was not released if the injuries were caused by the fire emergency or the slides, nor if those injured were passengers or crew.
Four and a half hours later, passengers were provided an alternative Airbus to take them to their destination.

A Thomas Cook Airbus A330-200 OY-VKF en route from Cancun to Manchester had 338 people aboard when pilots made an emergency diversion to Bermuda due to what one source called a “reported fire in the cabin” at about 8.20pm. Another account recorded the problem as ‘smoke coming from the in-flight entertainment system’.
Pilots made a safe landing with emergency services on standby. Passengers disembarked without injury, and were provided hotel accommodations until their flight out.
Thomas Cook’s official statement is that ‘It was initially reported as a suspected fire in the cabin, but there was no fire.’There was a small amount of smoke detected by a member of the crew in the cabin, but it is thought that was something to do with the in-flight entertainment system.’

What: Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88 en route from Atlanta to Charlotte Where: Atlanta When: Nov 10th 2011 Why: Delta flight took off normally but once in the air, the engine seems to have caught fire (according to passengers who heard an explosion and saw sparks.) No fire was officially reported.
The right hand engine poured smoke into the cabin but no fire.
Pilots were able to gain altitude to turn minus one engine, and to make a safe landing in Atlanta. Passengers disembarked, and were provided pizza and alternative flights. At least one passenger would have preferred alcohol to pizza.

What: plane en route from Glendale Municipal Airport Where: Villa de Paz Elementary School near 103rd Avenue and Camelback Road, Phoenix When: April 15, 2009 9:30 a.m. Wednesday Who: pilot and co-pilot suffered minor injuries Why: The pilot cut the engine, coasted across a field, hit a fence and ended up in a schoolyard behind a classroom.

What: PIA Airbus 310 en route from Karachi to London Where: Quaid-e-Azam Jinnah international airport When: Nov 18, 2012, 12:20 pm Who: 168 passengers, 16 crew Why: A Pakistan International Airlines plane took off from Karachi but developed a problem, After 55 minutes into the 8 hour flight, pilots diverted to Quaid-e-Azam Jinnah international airport. They made a safe landing. Reports are there was a technical problem.
Passengers reported hearing three bangs and saw flames shooting from the engine.
A television report said there was a fire, but PIA denied there was a fire.
Passengers were provided an alternative flight.
