    Where: Puerto Ordaz
    When: Sep 13 2010
Who: 43 passengers and 4 crew
Why: After takeoff while 10 miles from Manuel Piar International Airport, the crew experienced “control problems” requiring a return to the airport. Between the Caribbean island of Margarita and Puerto Ordaz, the plane crashed. 30 survivors were recovered from the wreckage and taken to hospitals and the remains of 2 were recovered. However the numbers that have been released indicate 23 survivors, (implying 5 additional fatalities.) Also, there may have been 51 aboard, instead of the number 47 released earlier, possibly because a count did not accurately include the crew.

The pilot was Conviasa Ramiro Cardenas.

Pilot rescued from San Diego Bay

What: Helicopter en route from Fifth Avenue Terminal
    Where: San Diego Bay
    When: August 22, 2010 6:20 p.m
    Who: Pilot
Why: When his helicopter suffered power loss, the helicopter pilot attempted landing on the Coronado Bridge. Persons on the bridge were in fear of a bridge collision, but those on the bridge need not have worried; the helicopter ended up instead in San Diego Bay.

Flotation devices kept the helicopter from sinking, and harbor police rescued the pilot. Rescuers needed every moment as the the pilot canopy was “broken in around him” which I take to mean he was pretty well entrapped. After retrieving the pilot, he was treated at UCSD Medial Center.

Celebrated since 1985, Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) is a nationwide public education campaign honoring the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county and local government employees and ensure that our government is the best in the world. Each year, the President and Congress designate the first full week of May as PSRW and activities are held nationwide and around the world in celebration of public employees who put service above self.

From the steps of the Capitol to the smallest towns, public servants use the week to educate citizens about the work that they do and why they have chosen public service careers. Throughout the week, communities take this occasion to host events from open houses to parades recognizing and thanking their local unsung heroes.

Flight Update: Ethiopian Death Toll Rising

By nightfall tonight, 34 bodies have been recovered.

Investigative crews sort through baby sandals, and airplane parts drifting ashore. People are questioning why the flight was not delayed due to the storm raging at the time of takeoff.

The USS-Ramage, and US P-3 surveillance aircraft are helping with search and rescue efforts.

The plane was last serviced on Dec. 25.

Reports abound that the plane was seen to be on fire on its way down. If reports of an engine fire proved to be correct, it would have been difficult to handle at such a low altitude; but reports of a lighting strike, compounded by poor visibility and high winds compounded by a bird strike are equally as possible.

Terrorism has been ruled out (for now.) Of course there is no evidence yet what happened to cause this disaster, but area storms–explosive turbulence inside cumulonimbus clouds– seem to be the most likely culprit. No survivors have been found.

    Cougar Flight 491 Suit Settles

Sikorsky, Keystone Helicopters and their parent company, United Technologies Corp. have settled in court with the the families of passengers who died on March 12, 2009. In court last July plaintiffs “voluntarily discontinued” the lawsuit to begin negotiations on a possible settlement. That settlement has been resolved, but the details are not public.

Because pilots believed the Sikorsky met U.S. FAA regulations that the aircraft could operate for 30 minutes after losing oil, they flew toward the shore rather than landing on the water.
