    Piper Cherokee Lands on Longmont Road in Rush Hour Traffic

    Why: A pilot flying over Longmont had engine trouble and had to make an emergency landing.

    The pilot realized he could not make the airport, and maneuvered in position over the road. He managed to land on a busy road with substantial traffic but there was no impact and the plane and cars were undamaged. The pilot apparently coasted in with the engine off. Interview is below

    Transition Roadable Aircraft (Flying Car)

    MIT engineers have built a car that flies. Or a plane that drives on the street. This vehicle flies (and drives) on ordinary gas. Below, we have attached a clip of the TRA’s first flight, or as the video calls it, it’s “Wright Brothers Moment.” The wings retract so it can drive on the road.

    No Mayday, then Gone

    I could speculate here about what caused the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, but that is all it would be: speculation. One can look at the type of plane, the weather, and various circumstances, but the truth is that the devil is in the details, and we just don’t know the details. The investigation will turn them up; the investigation can be a long road down a circular path.

    It makes it more difficult when there was no distress call. No mayday. Think of this: if something happens and you’re on a plane rapidly losing altitude—or with catastrophic issues which could be anything on a plane from a drunk grandpa to a bomb on board to a bad repair failing, to a sudden system failure due to frozen pitot tubes, what is the first thing that you are going to do if you’re part of the flight crew? That’s right—the first thing will be to fix the issue, and stay in the air. The last thing to do after the crisis is handled is to call ATC and let them know what’s going on.

    But because there was no distress call, we can assume that whatever happened happened fast. And now the wildest speculation of all is that the two people with fake passports were terrorists carrying a bomb. Do we need to go down that thought path? There are plenty of things that could have gone wrong although the 777 has a a stellar safety record.

    Now too, there is even speculation where the plane went down, apparently. There’s an oil slick approximately where the teams are searching. Maybe they’re right. Maybe under that slick, there’s a beacon to hear.

    Still, I keep hoping there’s a raft somewhere full of survivors.

    Emergency Landing in Colorado

    Three people en route from Alamosa to Ogden made an emergency landing in a Trans Med LLC Cirrus SR22 #N426TF when they experienced some problems with the plane.

    But they came in fast, bounced over a hill, rolled, etc, off the runway to a nearby road in Mack Colorado, around 6 pm September 23, 2013. I guess we could call this a runway excursion. It appears to have been quite an excursion from the runway. I suppose we are writing about it here because of the fast landing. We don’t know the problem that forced the pilot to land in Mack.

    The pilot and his two passengers apparently suffered very minor injuries that did not prevent them from renting a car and driving from Grand Junction to Ogden.

    The NTSB is investigating. The pilot and passengers were not mentioned by name.

    Mack is a small town 10 miles east of the Colorado/Utah border in Mesa County, Colorado. We had never heard of it either.

    Metrojet Airbus Crashes in Sinai Killing 220

    The Airbus A321 operating as Flight 7K9268 by Metrojet had 217 passengers and seven crew aboard and was en route from Sharm el Sheikh International Airport to Saint Petersburg-Pulkovo Airport when it crashed close to al Hassana, in a mountainous area of the Sinai peninsula, where there are insurgents. (Note in the images, it does not look very mountainous, but perhaps it is a plateau.) The plane was in the air about twenty-three minutes before it went off the grid. Deputy St. Petersburg Gov. Igor Albin said 25 children were among the dead. Nearly all the passengers were Russian tourists. Three were Ukraine. (We are looking for the passenger manifest.) Metrojet is also known as Kogalymavia.

    The plane slowed dramatically before the crash. Pilots apparently experienced technical difficulties and told ATC they wanted to divert. The black boxes have been recovered. Forty-five ambulances were dispatched to the crash site to recover the bodies. The plane was 18 years 6 months old. Pilot Valery Nemov reportedly had 12,000 air hours of experience, including 3,860 in A321s.

    Forensic experts were at the Pulkovo Airport in the special reception area designated for families of victims, where they gathered DNA to assist in cataloging the remains.

    IS claimed on its twitter page that they took the plane down to punish Russia for its military campaign in Syria. Russia dismisses this claim.

    Egypt’s Civil Aviation Minister said communication from the plane and ATC was normal; however, the Russian Embassy in Cairo says that Egyptian officials told them the pilot was trying to make an emergency landing.

    Venezuela Crash: 17 Dead

    What: Conviasa Aerospatiale ATR-42-300 en route from Puerto Ordaz to Porlamor Venezuela
    Where: Puerto Ordaz
    When: Sep 13 2010
    Who: 51 aboard, 15 fatalities, 36 passengers and crew survived
    Why: After takeoff while 10 miles from Manuel Piar International Airport, the crew experienced “control problems” requiring a return to the airport. Between the Caribbean island of Margarita and Puerto Ordaz, the plane crashed. 36 survivors were recovered from the wreckage and taken to hospitals and the remains of 2 were recovered.

    As of Sept 18, the number of dead has risen to 17. Conviasa is suspending flights for two weeks for safety assessments.

    The pilot was Conviasa Ramiro Cardenas.

    The plane crashed in the Sidor Steel Mill junkyard/storage area amid heaps and barrels of unused steel.

    While attempting an emergency landing, the plane became entangled with electrical wires and crashed.

    Current reports indicate 23 survivors. We will be updating as we hear news.
