3 Lost when Cessna Crashes Mt Si, King County Washington

    What: Cessna 172
    Where: North Bend, Washington
    When: Feb 15, 2012
    Who: 3 fatalities
Why: Around 2 a.m. a King County resident heard the sputtering engine of a plane in distress, and called in a 911. Deputies on foot patrol heard the sound of a crash in the same area. The FAA picked up the emergency beacon (transponder). Emergency teams were using portable emergency locator receivers to follow the beacon to find the crash site. At 4:15 a.m., the King County’s Guardian One helicopter crew with night vision goggles assisted in discovering the fuselage from a single-engine Cessna 172 near a sheer face of Little Si mountain. The bodies of three individuals were found by teams of rescue hikers traveling about a mile by foot from the local base of operations.

Two men and a woman were found. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus said the flight was not in contact with ATC.

Two of the three people killed in the small plane crash on Mount Si were swim coaches in King County. 31-year-old “Coach Seth” Dawson’s memorial was held Thursday night. Federal Way’s Decatur High School swim coach, Rob Hill was also killed in the crash, as well as Liz Redling. Hill was pursuing his commercial pilot’s license.

There may have been ground fog at the time of the crash.

Stolen Cessna Smashed up in Fresno

What: Cessna 172N Skyhawk en route from Buchannan Field Airport
    Where: Fresno California
    When: Feb 5 2012
    Who: 1 fatality
Why: Apparently Ray Pirro who was not a pilot snuck into Buchanan Field and stole the Cessna Skyhawk that took his life. Pirro had no pilots license, was covered in tattoos, was recently released from prison, and apparently just took the plane to take a joy ride. He flew into power lines and smashed up by Barstow Avenue. Owner Felix J Boston is a retired lieutenant colonel. He had left the plane in Buchanan Field Airport and was surprised to find someone had taken it. He called the plane “his baby” and regrets its loss.

The thief had covered the plane’s registration numbers and stopped off at a Stockton Walmart for junk food. (The crash site was strewn with Cheese whiz.) There was still gas in the plane, so it did not run out of gas, but striking the power lines may have been Pirro’s downfall.

Unqualified Pilot Sued for Daughter’s Death

Accidents are what happen when you think they won’t.

If Steven Fay had known Jessica Malin would die in the flight and he would survive, he never would have taken her on the twin engine Cessna on Jan 1, 2011. At 4:30 p.m. on on Jan 1, 2011, the day of the crash, the plane’s wings clipped treetops while landing in Orange about 90 minutes after sunset.

He shouldn’t have flown her. He was not certified to fly the plane, which crashed approach to Orange Municipal Airport. His license was revoked after the crash. He was arraigned on Feb 1 2012 for involuntary manslaughter for Jessica Malin’s death. Malin was his daughter. She was 35.

Fay denied the charges. He returns to court on Feb 24.

Sugar Grove Family Sues Deceased Pilot

On January 23, 2010, there was fog at the time of takeoff and visibility was a half-mile. Gary Bradford and his passenger Drago Strahija were killed when Bradford’s plane crashed in a neighborhood eight minutes from the Aurora Municipal Airport.

The Doyles, the family in whose yard the plane crashed are suing the pilot’s widow. On April 5, the Doyle family will face Gary Bradford’s estate in court.

Rita Bradford and her deceased husband owned ENS Corp., a Florida IT firm. At the time of the crash, he had owned the plane for three months after 98 hours of instrument experience, and 52 hours of flight instruction in seven days.

The meat of the suit is that the Doyles say the pilot did not properly inspect, maintain or know how to land the Cessna.

When the Cessna crashed in the Doyle’s yard, the plane did not strike the house, but debris started a fire in the north side of the garage.
