What: Cessna 501 Citation I/SP en route from Venice Florida to Macon County, NC Where: Franklin-Macon County Airport, NC When: Mar 15, 2012 Who: 2 crew, 3 passengers, 5 fatalities Why: The plane owned by Bogdan Jakubowski of Venice, Florida appeared to be approaching too steeply when it attempted to land at 1:45, and when the pilot tried to level, a wing hit pavement, flipping and rolling the plane, which exploded into flames. Rescuers were on the scene within a minute but the plane was already engulfed. The names of those aboard have not been released.
What: Jet One Express Convair CV-340 en route from San Juan to St. Maarten Where: San Juan When: Mar 15th 2012 Who: 2 crew Why: On takeoff, the Corvair developed engine trouble. They consulted with ATC and decided to return to the airport but instead ended up in the La Torrecilla Lagoon. Witnesses saw the plane trailing smoke as it approached.
The pilot and copilot died on impact. The flight has been confirmed as flight 440 to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport. It was a cargo flight with only two crew aboard.
Divers are working to retrieve the bodies from the underwater wreckage. No names have been released.

What: American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83 en route from Portland,OR to Dallas Ft. Worth,TX Where: Portland When: Mar 13th 2012 6:25 Who: 132 aboard Why: The plane was en route when pilots developed a problem with the engine compressor. Port of Portland Emergency services were on standby on the flight’s return to Portland (as seen in the video.)
What: Jetblue Embraer ERJ-190 en route from Boston to Chicago Where: Buffalo When: Mar 12th 2012 Who: 83 passengers Why: After a female caller phoned in from Boston that a passenger aboard Jetblue flight B6-923 was possibly carrying a bomb, the flight diverted to Buffalo. After maintaining a holding plan over the airport, the flight landed safely after 8 a m. THe jet was taken to an isolated area of the airport and all the passengers were assisted off. Officers and canine patrol made a sweep of the plane, luggage and passengers and nothing was found. The incident shut down the airport until 8:30 am.
The FBI said there was no threat and that the entire incident was a domestic dispute. The NTSB made this statement:
“JetBlue flight 923 (BOS-ORD) diverted to Buffalo Niagara International Airport at the request of the flight crew because of a telephonic bomb threat. The plane landed safely at 8:25 a.m. and has since been cleared of any possible threats. A passenger is being interviewed by law enforcement authorities.”
What: Delta Boeing 737 Where: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport When: Mar 13, 2013 Who: Crew Why: As mechanics were testing the engine of a Delta Boeing 737 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the plane developed braking problems. The jet ended at an awkward angle on a hill just off a runway.
The jet sustained damage but none of the mechanics were injured.
What: US Airways Express flight 3650 Canadair CRJ (CRJ) en route from Washington to Philadelphia Where: Washington DC When: March 12, 2012 2:20 pm Who: 3 crew, 29 passengers Why: After takeoff from Ronald Reagan National Airport, a warning light indicated problems. Pilots diverted to Dulles where they made a safe landing with emergency services on standby.
Passengers were provided alternative flights.
US 3650 is a 58 minute 119 mile domestic flight departing from the Ronald Reagan Washington Natl, Washington airport (DCA) and arriving at Philadelphia airport (PHL).
What: American Airlines Dallas to Chicago Where: Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport When: March 9 2012 Who: 1 flight attendant Why: While American Airlines Flight 2332 was on the runway, a flight attendant gave a fifteen minute rambling dialogue on the public address system just before she had a meltdown, and started screeching about the plane crashing. (see passenger’s raw video youtube below.) The fight attendant is apparently bi-polar and had not taken her medication.
Among other things, she said, “We are not taking off. We’re having technical difficulties. We are heading back to the gate.”
Passengers and crew cooperated in restraining her.
Wisely the pilot did not take off with her aboard but returned to the gate and dropped her where she was detained by police. Two flight attendants were injured and hospitalized. (Reports do not say if this number included the bipolar attendant.)
What: Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-300 en route from Phoenix to Fort Lauderdale Where: Austin When: Mar 6th 2012 Who: 134 passengers, 5 crew Why: While en route, the right engine developed problems. The Southwest Airlines crew shut down the right engine and diverted to Austin Texas where they made a safe landing with emergency services on standby.
Passengers were provided alternative transportation.
Lt. Lance Leone, the co-pilot aboard Coast Guard helicopter 6017 on July 7, 2010 when it struck some wires between the mainland and an island near La Push, Washington, was charged with negligent homicide and destruction of government property, and dereliction of duty.
Those charges have been dropped.
The crash killed the chopper’s pilot, Lt. Sean Krueger, along with Aviation Maintenance Technicians Brett Banks and Adam Hoke. The charges had been levied in accordance with the strict culture of discipline and accountability. The inherent danger of Coast Guard operations is a given, but the three fatalities warranted a full investigation.
Lt. Lance Leone hopes to be in retraining soon in accordance with the Coast Guard mission, pass retraining, and securing a new Coast Guard assignment flying and rescuing.
The Philadelphia International Airport is open again after a drunk was chased on to airport property at 10 am. In his SUV, Kenneth Richard Mazik drove through a fence and two runways. He was charged with driving under the influence, simple and aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, defiant trespass and criminal mischief. U.S. Airways Flight 3137 nearly landed on him, but ATC had the pilot abort the landing. No explosives were found aboard the Jeep. The airport was open by 4 pm.
What: SkyWest en route from Houston to Toronto Where: East Texas Regional Airport in Gregg County When: March 6, 2012, 10:02 PM, Who: 58 passengers, 2 pilots, 2 flight attendants Why: While en route, a small fire in a cockpit printer sent the smell of smoke though the flight deck. The fire was reported to ATC and the plane made an emergency landing at East Texas Regional Airport in Gregg County.
The 58 passengers disembarked without emergency, and were bussed to Dallas where another plane was scheduled to take them the last leg of their journey.
AP reported this as a United Express jet. SkyWest operates the flight as a codeshare with United Airlines and Continental.
What: Iowa State Patrol en route from Sioux City to Atlantic Where: Denison airport When: Mar 6 2012 Who: Pilot Trooper Scott Pigsley Why: Scott Pigsley was returning from searching for a woman when his plane struck geese. At the time, he knew something had happened, but wasn’t sure what it was until after he landed and saw the damage to the single engine Cessna he was flying. The goose or geese left dents on the wings, a broken wheel cover and blood on the Cessna, but the problems Pigsley had encountered involved the engine.
What: US Airways/Air Wisconsin Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Cleveland,OH to Philadelphia,PA Where: Philadelphia When: Mar 3rd 2012 Who: 1 injury Why: On approach to Philadelphia, a flight attendant was injured by turbulence.
On landing, the flight attendent was transported to the hospital.
What: American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82 en route from Dallas to Memphis Where: Little Rock Arkansas When: Mar 5, 2012 Who: 129 passengers, 5 crew Why: While en route, one of the plane’s engines developed an oil pressure issue. Pilots diverted to Little Rock and made a safe landing there. Another plane took passengers from Little Rock to Memphis.
What: United/Shuttle America Embraer ERJ-170 en route from Atlanta,GA to Newark,NJ Where: Newark When: Feb 27th 2012 6:20 p.m Who: 69 passengers and 4 crew Why: While on approach to Newark, the crew received a gear disagreement msg, and aborted their approach. Fire and other rescue crews were on the scene; ground crews sprayed the plane with foam fire retardant.
While circling, the crew attempted to fix the problem and performed a flyby. The flyby indicated that the nose gear was not down. ATC is recorded as saying “You got no nose gear… Door might have opened. Saw a little bump.”
The pilots replied “Even if you see that nose wheel down, we’re not going to know it’s completely down and locked. I would like to go ahead and declare an emergency at this time. And request fire rescue when we get there, assuming we stop on the runway.”
The pilots landed on the second approach and performed a belly landing.
As the plane filled with smoke, passengers evacuated via slides and were bussed to the gate. They were well prepared; passengers were alerted to the impending rough landing when the plane was 45 minutes out.
Note: “Examination found that the nose wheels were found turned perpendicular in the wheel well, impeding extension.” The problem may have originated with the hydraulics.

Service members with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing were involved.
The crash happened west of the Chocolate Mountains in California.

What: United Boeing 737-800 en route from Portland to Houston Where: Portland When: Feb 21st 2012 Who: 1 unruly passenger Why: Twenty minutes after departing, the flight was back in Portland dropping off Yazeed Mohammed Abunayyan, after he had taken a swing at a flight attendant, and hit several passengers prior to being subdued and handcuffed. The Saudi Arabian passenger was yelling profanities, and chanting about Osama bin Laden and his hatred of women.
A relative says Abunayyan suffers from schizophrenia. The cousin, Fahad Alsubaie who was accompanying Yazeed said he was escorted off the plane too, and that the disruption began after a flight attendant confronted the two for sitting together.
Last Sunday Abunayyan led police on a slow-speed chase in the Southern Oregon town Sunday, ramming two police cars and nearly hitting a pedestrian, charged with drunken driving and assaulting an officer and was released on bail Monday. The cousin was there too, trying to stop the car by taking the keys.
Abunayyan said that the “other person inside me” was driving.

What: Trans States Airlines Embraer ERJ-145 en route from Chicago O’Hare,IL to Rochester,NY Where: Rochester When: Feb 22nd 2012 Who: 42 passengers and 3 crew Why: The flight made a fast landing on the wet runway in less than ideal conditions, overrunning the edge of the runway.
There were no injuries. Passengers disembarked and were driven to the gate; the plane had to be towed, which closed the runway. The plane had minor damage.
What: Beechcraft 35-A33 Debonair Where: Rio Vista California When: Feb 19 2012 Who: 2 aboard Why: After the helicopter and plane bumped over Rio Vista, the pilot had to make a hard landing short of Byron Airport, 8 miles south of Rio Vista Municipal Airport. Apparently the plane struck the chopper’s skids. The 1961 six-seat Beechcraft plane involved in the collision is registered to Ronald A. Gawer of Brentwood in Contra Costa County.
When the Solano Fire crews arrived on the scene, they found the pilot with minor injuries, and the passenger was unhurt.
What: Vertical CFI Helicopters Robinson R22 Beta II Where: Rio Vista California When: Feb 19 2012 Who: 1 aboard Why: The helicopter clipped the plane over Rio Vista. The chopper was eight miles from the airport when it crashed.
Although the contact broke off the tail of the chopper and ended the severed rotor up 50 feet from the fuselage, the pilot walked away. She was reported to be unhurt; She is an experienced commercial airplane pilot who was logging night-flying hours alone toward a helicopter license.
What: Delta Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route from Los Angeles to Detroit Where: Detroit When: Feb 18th 2012 Who: 2 injured Why: The flight was on approach to Detroit and flew into turbulence.
A passenger and a flight attendant were injured.
The flight landed safely in Detroit. The flight attendant was hospitalized.
What: Cessna 414A Chancellor En route from Texas to Hayden. Where: Yampa Valley Regional Airport, Hayden, Colorado When: Feb 19 2012 3:30 p.m. Who: 6 aboard, 2 fatalities Why: Before flying to Colorado, the plane left Corpus Christi International Airport at 9 a.m. and stopped in Dalhart, Texas. By the time they reached Colorado, there was a heavy snow storm. The flight was coming in to the airport, and with zero visibility crashed 30 yards short of the airport.
Of the six aboard, two—a man and a woman—were killed on impact and four were injured. The plane crashed 300 yards from the airport’s fire station but did not catch afire. The four injured were conscious when they were taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center in Steamboat Springs. They had been going to Steamboat Springs for a ski vacation.
The name on the plane’s registration is Scott A. Humpal of Woodsboro Texas. The pilot and Humpal’s wife Gabby were the victims of the crash. Humpal and his three children survived the crash.
Eleven year old Sara, the youngest daughter, has a broken back. She is scheduled for surgery Monday. Scott has a punctured lung.
