What: Westjet Airlines Boeing 737-700 en route from Calgary to Winnipeg Where: Winnipeg Canada When: May 29 2010 Who: 96 people on board Why: While on approach to Winnipeg the flight encountered turbulence which injured four: two flight attendants and two passengers. After the Boeing made a safe landing, two of the injured were hospitalized, and two went home after treatment at the airport.
What: Spirit Airlines Airbus A319-100 en route from Cartagena Colombia to Ft. Lauderdale Where: Ft. Lauderdale When: May 30th 2010 Who: 90 passengers and 5 crew Why: On landing, while still on the runway, smoke permeated the cabin, forcing evacuation on to the runway. Three passengers were hospitalized due to injuries during the evacuation.
What: Canadian North Boeing 737-200 en route from St. John’s NL to Winnipeg Where: Fredericton When: May 25 2010 Who: 31 people on board, Why: While en route, the left engine developed developed oil pressure issues and had to be shut down. The flight diverted to Fredericton and made a safe landing.
What: United Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from London Heathrow to Los Angeles,CA Where: Montreal When: May 25th 2010 Who: 96 passengers and 15 crew Why: While en route, over the Hudson Strait, the flight encountered turbulence, injuring one stewardess and five passengers. The flight nearly diverted to O’Hare but instead diverted to Montreal, where the injured were hospitalized. A replacement Boeing was provided-
What: Wizzair Bulgaria Airbus A320-200 en route from Madrid to Sofia Bulgaria Where: Madrid When: May 22nd 2010 Who: 136 passengers Why: During takeoff, two tires burst. Takeoff was rejected. Passengers disembarked and the tires were replaced, with the flight not arriving in Sophia until nearly 18 hours later.
What: Spicejet Boeing 737-800 en route from New Delhi to Srinagar India Where: Delhi When: May 24th 2010 Who: 188 passengers Why: After a normal takeoff, the crew was advised to return due to debris on the runway. After a flyby during which tire damage was observed, the Spicejet flight made a safe landing. Repairs were made and the flight took off again four hours later. No indication is made of passenger accommodation.
What: Travel Service Boeing 737-800 en route from Narvik Norway to Dublin Where: Dublin When: May 24th 2010 Why: On approach, the crew reported a hydraulic problem. The plane landed safely with emergency services on standby, and was towed.
What: Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 en route from Shanghai to Munich Where: Munich When: May 24th 2010 Why: On approach, after getting a gear indicator message, the flight performed a go-round followed by a safe landing. On the ground the hydraulic leak was discovered.
What: Skywest Canadair CRJ-200 en route from San Francisco,CA to Ontario,CA Where: Ontario When: May 23rd 2010 Who: 24 passengers and 3 crew Why: The crew aborted a landing after receiving an indication of a nose gear problem. Unable to lower the gear, after a visual inspection by ATC, the crew performed an open-door landing. There were no injuries, and we have no estimate of the damage to the plane.
What: Air India Express Boeing 737-800 en route from Dubai to Mangalore Where: Mangalore airport When: 6:00 a.m May 22 2010 Who: 160 (?) passengers including 23 children, 6 crew= 158 fatalities and 8 survivors Why: Air India Express flight 812 attempted touch down was around the middle marker. (Conflicting) reports are that it overshot the runway, and that the pilot intended a go round (tapes reveal the co pilot was urging a go-round) but the plane hit the localizer antenna at the runway’s end, plowed through the perimeter losing part of a wing, and went down 75 feet into a ravine, and broke into pieces and burst into flames. On touchdown, there was a reported “bang” which may have been a tire bursting. A drizzle started after the accident. From 5 to 10 people have been hospitalized, but according to reports there are possibly 3 survivors.
Survivor Abdul Puttur suffered burns. He was seated near the wing exit and said that the pilot had announced the landing, then there was a thud. He saw huge flames after the plane fell into the ravine and then he jumped out from the back entrance. Another passenger said the pilot made no announcement.
The Serbian pilot was Zlatko Glusica, first officer was S.S. Ahluwalia.
According to DGCA rules, Mangalore International Airport is deemed a “critical airfield” which means that “supervised take offs and landings” are prohibited. Only the captain (not the first officer) can pilot take-offs and landings. Mangalore International Airport has a controversial table top runway and which forces pilots to make a precision landing. The airport has no buffer zone, and pilots landing planes must fly precisely or risk hurtling off the edge.
What: Cimber Air Aerospatiale ATR-72-500 en route from Copenhagen to Aalborg Where: Kastrup Airport, Copenhagen When: May 18th 2010 Who: 63 passengers and 4 crew Why: After takeoff, the plane lost a nose wheel when a wheel fell off after an axle broke. The plane returned to land at Kastrup. The landing was safe, and the passengers were rebooked on a subsequent flight.
What: Transaero Boeing 737-500 en route from Moscow to Krasnodar Where: Moscow When: May 19th 2010 Who: 87 passengers Why: While en route, the crew received an indication of low hydraulic pressure. The flight returned to Moscow and made a safe landing. Passengers were booked onto other flights.
What: Travel Service Boeing 737-800 en route from Sharm el Sheikh Egypt to Prague Where: Cairo When: May 17th 2010 Who: 160 passengers Why: While en route, the flight crew found indication of a wheel well fire and diverted to Prague. The flight landed safely, and the indication proved to be groundless, causing only a minor delay at the airport.
What: United Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from New York to Los Angeles Where: Washington When: May 16th 2010 Who: 105 passengers and 7 crew Why: While en route, the crew discovered a fire in the cockpit in the power wires to the windshield heaters. The crew put out the flames, and diverted to Dulles where they made a safe landing. No mention of how the passengers were handled; but this is a known problem with the windshield heaters.
What: Jetblue Airbus A320-200 en route from Sacramento CA to New York Where: New York When: May 17th 2010 Why: After landing at JFK, while taxiing on the runway, the plane encountered a bird (or flock of birds) sustaining minor damage.
What: Continental Airlines/Colgan Air Saab 340B en route from Houston to Shreveport Where: Lufkin Texas When: May 17th 2010 Why: While en route, the flight encountered turbulence. One injured passenger remained aboard until a safe landing at Shreveport.
What: Pamir Airways Antonov 24B en route from Kunduz to Kabul Where: Salang Pass (Afghanistan) When: May 17, 2010 Who: 5 crew 38 passengers Why: While embarking on a flight in poor weather, the plane disappeared from radar while en route. The wreckage was found in a mountainous region (Salang Pass.) Recovery efforts are impeded by location, and current weather conditions which are snowy/rainy.
What: Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from New York NY to Amsterdam Netherlands Where: 150nm north of Halifax,NS When: May 13th 2010 Why: While en route, the plane developed oil pressure problems and had to shut down an engine. They diverted to Halifax and made a cautionary landing.
Delta provided a replacement plane for the passengers within a few hours.
What: Air New Zealand/ Mount Cook Airlines Aerospatiale ATR-72-500 on behalf of Air New Zealand en route from Dunedin to Wellington New Zealand Where: Wellington When: May 15th 2010 Who: 61 passengers Why: On landing approach, the plane’s right engine caught on fire. The plane made a safe landing, shut down the engine and was met by emergency services.
Maintenance found and replaced a leaking fuel line.
What: Cathay Pacific Airbus A340-300 en route from Hong Kong (China) to Vancouver,BC Where: Canada When: May 15th 2010 Who: 280 passengers Why: While the flight was en route, the airline received a phone call that there was a bomb aboard. Over Canada, two Canadian CF-18 Hornet fighter jets escorted the flight to Vancouver where it landed safely and was taxied to a remote location.
What: Aer Lingus Airbus A330-200, registration en route from Orlando, to Dublin Where: Orlando When: Dublin Who: 245 passengers and 11 crew Why: Just after takeoff, the left engine of the Airbus had a large oil loss and was subsequently shut down. The flight returned to the airport half an hour later and made a safe landing. Passengers were provided hotel accommodations and booked on alternative flights the next day.
What: AeroMexico Connect Embraer ERJ-145 en route from San Antonio to Mexico City Where: Ciudad Victoria When: May 13th 2010 Who: 31 passengers Why: The Aeromexico Connect had a fire alert in a cargo compartment. They diverted to Ciudad Victoria where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was flown in the next day. Also, the fire alert appeared to be a groundless indicator error; no fire was found.

( We are very sorry to announce the tragic loss of Afriqiyah airways flight 8U 771 from Johannesburg in an accident during landing at Tripoli international airport at 04:00 UTC. (06:00 am Tripoli time) today Wednesday, May 12. We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims. The search and rescue mission has now been completed and casualties have been moved to various hospitals. The secretariat of health will issue a statement on the condition of those casualties.
At this moment we cannot speculate further and will relay to you all factual information as we receive them.

What: Dagmar Transport LLC Cirrus SR22 GTS en route from the Dominican Republic to Miami to Tuscaloosa Alabama Where: Tuscaloosa Regional Airport When: May 10 2010 Who: Pilot and passenger 41 year old Mark Yellen and 56 year old Paula Moffett Why: Witnesses say that on landing, one of the plane’s wings may have hit the pavement before the landing gear. The single engine plane flipped and crashed twenty-five yards short of the runway.
What: Afriqiyah Airways Airbus A330-200 en route from Johannesburg South Africa to Tripoli, Libya Where: Tripoli’s runway 09 When: May 12th 2010 Who: 93 passengers and 11 crew (105 reported fatalities: 94 passengers and 11 crew) A child may have survived. Why: In good weather conditions with winds of three mph, the flight was on approach to Tripoli International Airport which has no instrument landing system and the runway itself is not in good condition. The accident happened one minute before sea level sunrise may have had to deal with visibility problems flying toward the rising sun, or possibly patchy fog.
The plane crashed on approach to the runway and is fragmented as if a high speed impact.
The wreckage area is described as a debris field. Rescue crew and volunteers are on the scene and all bodies are said to have been recovered, with one possible survivor.
Afriqiyah Airways is owned by the Libyan government.
