On May 21, 2013, a Lufthansa Bombardier CRJ took off at 6 a. m. from Katowice Poland and developed an engine problem. Pilots returned to Katowice and made a safe landing reportedly with an engine fire. The affected engine was shut down.

The plane landed at approximately 7 with about an hour spent in the air. All traffic throughout the airport was stopped at the time.

    Turbulence Injures Attendants, Passenger

On January 16, 2013, an American Eagle Canadair CRJ-700 en route from New Orleans to Chicago encountered turbulence which injured flight attendants and a passenger. The pilots made a safe landing in Chicago.

If you’re buckled in, turbulence feels more dangerous than it is. Unfortunately, flight attendants, who are required to be up and about doing their jobs, are not infrequently injured by turbulence, whether it is clear-air (hard to predict changeable jet stream-rivers of air), wind shear, microbursts, mountain waves, thermal or wake turbulence left by another plane.

The physical consequences of being unbuckled when turbulence strikes means the unsecured person can be hurled about the plane, jolted in the air, struck by food carts or anything else loose in the plane. I’ve been on some white-knuckled flights where the flight attendants were champs and in spite of getting bounced around managed to calm the passengers. It’s only afterwards coming across either a cool and calm (or white-knuckled) pilot that I was able to determine just how dangerous the turbulence was.

In this case, great. A safe landing trumps everything. Too bad about the two injured flight attendants and passenger though.

Medicated Sleepwalker Mistakes Exit Door for Bathroom

What: US Airways/ Air Wisconsin Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Portland Maine to Philadelphia
    Where: Boston
    When: May 10th 2012
Who: 50 passengers and 3 crew
Why: A passenger with a history of seizures and on medication attempted to open the door while en route.

The disruptive passenger was caught by a flight attendant, who stopped him. He told her he was going to the bathroom. The attendant led him to a seat in the rear of the plane where state police found him. Other passengers may have been upset or frightened by the incident, but under normal conditions, it’s not physically possible to open the door while in flight anyway.

Pilots diverted the flight to Boston where the disruptive passenger was offloaded, presumably by gentlemen in white coats.

Michael Ensalaco, 40, of Mooresville, N.C was charged with interfering with a flight crew. His lawyer explained that his seizure disorder is similar to sleep walking.

    In George’s Point of View

While a medical event should not be handled in the same way as a malicious act, perhaps someone with this tendency should not fly, or else they should not sleep during the flight, and also be obligated to inform the flight crew ahead of time. It could happen to anyone taking Ambien!

Smoked Out Cockpit Claims Pinnacle Flight

What: Delta Airlines/Pinnacle Airlines Canadair CRJ-440 en route from New York JFK,NY to Lewisburg,WV
    Where: New York
    When: Jan 21st 2012, 3:00 pm

Pilots put on their oxygen masks and reported smoke in the cockpit. ATC had to negotiate the flight’s return with other flights coming and going, but managed to get them back on the ground about twelve minutes after takeoff.

By the time maintenance examined the plane, smoke had dispersed. The smoke is being attributed to fluid burn-off.

    Passengers were provided alternative transportation.

This week an article in Business Week discussed cost-cutting measures that might be taken by Pinnacle after a 12% decline following the 2009 Colgan Air crash and a $1.89 million fine from the FAA over unfinished flight attendant training.
