    Air India Flight Lands in Emergency at Toronto

    airindiaAir India flight 126 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Toronto Pearson Airport, Canada, at around 0700 hours IST on September 7.

    The Chicago-Delhi-Hyderabad flight was diverted after the pilot suspected oil leakage in one of the 2 engines of the Boeing 777 ER aircraft.

    The plane landed safely after shedding extra fuel and none of the 342 passengers aboard was hurt.

    Ground engineers at Toronto Pearson Airport were inspecting the aircraft for determining source of leakage.

    Merpati Crashes in West Papua NG

    What: Merpati Nusantara Airlines Boeing 737-300 en route from Sarong to Manokwari West Papua. (Sorong-Dominique Edward Osok Airport to Rendani Airport)
    Where: Rendani Airport, Indonesia
    When: 12 April 2010
    Who: 97 passengers ( 76 men, 21 women, three children and three infants) 6 crew
    Why: While landing at Rendani in heavy fog and rain, the flight overshot the runway and/or hydroplaned on the wet runway, lost a wing in a forest at the end of the runway and partially ended up with the tail suspended in river shallows. The fuselage split in two. No one was trapped; everyone got out alive. Reports of injury vary, from 80 minor injuries to 20 individuals who sustained varying degrees of injury (broken bones and head injury), one who had facial injury and trouble breathing.

    Merpati is on the banned list. Nevertheless, Merpati spokesmen say this was entirely due to weather and not pilot error.

    JAL Business Class Fire over Tokyo

    What: A JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from Tokyo to Sydney
    Where: Tokyo
    When: Jan 14th 2012
    Who: 260 aboard
    Why: About twenty minutes after takeoff, a passenger’s armrest caught on fire in business class. After the fire was put out, the pilots dumped fuel, and the flight returned to Tokyo where it made a safe landing.

    The fire has been attributed to a passenger’s lighter.

    China Southern Plane Diverts to Netherlands

    China SouthernChina Southern Airlines flight CZ303 was forced to divert and make an emergency landing at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Netherlands, on the afternoon of August 3.

    The Boeing Dreamliner, heading from Guangzhou, China, to Heathrow Airport, London, had to be diverted after it ran out of fuel mid-air.

    The plane, with a capacity of boarding 335 passengers, landed uneventfully.

    No injuries were reported.

    Fifth Boeing 747-8 Enters Flight-test Program


    EVERETT, Wash., Feb. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Boeing (NYSE: BA) successfully conducted the first flight of the fifth 747-8 Freighter Thursday. The airplane, coded as RC523, took off from Paine Field in Everett, Wash., for a 3-hour, 30-minute flight before returning to Paine Field.

    The flight included a standard 2-hour, 30-minute “B1” flight profile that Boeing conducts on all production airplanes prior to delivery, plus an hour of engineering testing woven into the profile.

    “The airplane performed well,” said Andy Hammer, test program manager for 747-8. “It was a fine start to the test plan for this airplane.”

    This is the fifth 747-8 Freighter being used in the flight-test program. Each airplane is used for a specific set of tests, with this airplane focusing on functionality and reliability testing.

    The airplane will remain based at Paine Field throughout its test plan.

    American Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing at JFK Airport

    American Airlines flight AA-2681 had to return and make an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, on January 5th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Cancun, Mexico, but had to turn back due to an engine fire indication.

    The plane landed safely. All one hundred and sixty-seven people aboard remained unharmed.
