    Engine Fire at Sharjah International Airport

    Why: At Sharjah International Airport, a Russian cargo plane made an emergency landing when a fire developed in one of its four engines. The pilot shut down the affected engine and made a safe landing. The aircraft is currently grounded at the Sharjah airport pending repair and investigation.

    The incident occurred four days after the Azza Transport B707 at Sharjah on Oct 21st 2009 went up in a fireball and grounded the airport for several hours.

    Bird-Hit JetBlue Plane Makes Safe Landing at JFK Airport

    JetBlue flight B6-838 made a safe landing following a bird strike near John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, on August 13th.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane was flying from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, when a bird hit it.

    The plane continued for a safe landing. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    US Airways Emergency Landing in Durango

    What: US Airways Express/Mesa Airlines de Havilland-8 twin-engine turboprop en route from Grand Junction to Phoenix
    Where: Durango-La Plata County Airport
    When: October 5, 2009
    Who: 31 passengers.
    Why: While en route, the plane lost an engine. The engine failure was due to an oil-pressure problem, though it is not clear from our report whether or not the engine actually failed, or what is more likely, that the pilot shut it down. The plane diverted to Durango and landed safely; some of the passengers were able to fly out on the next flight to Phoenix.

    Qantas Engine Flames Out on Runway

    What: Qantas Boeing 747-400 en route from Sydney to Los Angeles
    Where: Sydney
    When: Jan 15th 2011
    Who: 344 passengers
    Why: On the runway for takeoff, a left engine made a banging noise and shot flames. The pilots were able to stop the jet on the runway, and the plane was towed and inspected. Passengers were provided an alternative flight 4 and a half hours later.

    F-15 Fighter Jet Makes Emergency Landing in Tulsa

    An F-15 fighter jet had to make an emergency landing at Tulsa International Airport, Oklahoma, on April 14th.

    The plane was one of the two returning from a training session at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina. Authorities said the pilot decided to divert due to a “minor system malfunction.”

    The plane landed uneventfully. No injuries were reported.

    Bird-Hit Southwest Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Memphis

    southwest_airlines_logoSouthwest Airlines flight WN-486 had to return and make an emergency landing in Memphis, Tennessee, on December 4th.

    The Boeing 737-700 plane took off for Houston, Texas, but had to turn back due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained safe.
