    Nigeria: Arik Air 737 Bird Strike

    What: Arik Air Boeing 737-700 en route from Owerri to Lagos
    Where: Owerri Nigeria
    When: May 8th 2011
    Who: 69 passengers
    Why: While en route, the plane incurred a bird strike. The bird was ingested in an engine. The flight continued until there were severe vibrations on the right side of the plane (where the strike occurred).

    Passengers aboard the flight said they experienced five minutes of terror (that lasted forever) as the right side of the plane was vibrating. Presumably pilots shut down that engine after five minutes.

    The pilots made a safe landing in Lagos.

    Alaska Airlines Plane Struck by Lightning; Returns to LAX

    Alaska AirlinesAn Alaska Airlines Flight 006 returned to Los Angeles International Airport, California, on the afternoon of July 18.

    The Boeing 737, heading towards Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Virginia, had to return for an emergency landing after it was hit by lightning.

    The plane landed uneventfully.

    All 159 passengers aboard remained unhurt.

    Comair Flight Returns to Johannesburg After Bird Strike

    Comair flight MN-233 had to return and make an emergency landing in Johannesburg, South Africa, on February 8th.

    The Boeing 737-400 plane took off for Port Elizabeth, South Africa, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Hainan Airlines Plane Diverts to China due to Smoke Detector Indication

    Hainan AirlinesA Hainan Airlines flight HU-498 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Harbin Taiping International Airport, Harbin, China, on November 8.

    The Boeing 787-800 was en-route from Illinois, to Beijing, China, when the crew decided to divert to Harbin due to a smoke indication in passenger cabin.

    The plane landed safely. The smoke indication later turned out to be false.

    All passengers aboard remained unharmed.

    Delta: Whacked Tail at JFK

    What: Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 from New York JFK,NY to Sao Paulo
    Where: New York
    When: Mar 6th 2011
    Why: The Delta Boeing encountered heavy wind on takeoff and suffered a tail strike. The pilot returned to JFK and made a safe landing. According to Flight Aware, the duration of the flight was 49 minutes.

    What: Royal Brunei Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from Manila to Bandar Seri Begawan
    Where: Kota Kinabalu
    When: Apr 18 2010
    Who: 150 people
    Why: While en route, the flight developed engine trouble. The plane made a safe landing and was able to resume the flight after several hours.
