    Venice-Bound Germanwings Flight Diverts to Stuttgart Airport

    GermanwingsGermanwings Flight 4U 814 had to divert and make an unscheduled landing at Stuttgart Airport, Germany, on April 4.

    The airline said the Airbus A319, en-route from Cologne, Germany, to Venice, Italy, had to be diverted after the pilot reported suspected oil leakage and shut down one of the engines. “This is a standard safety procedure. It was not an emergency landing,” the statement said.

    The plane landed safely and all 123 passengers and 5 crew members remained safe.

    The aircraft was taken for inspection while an alternate plane was arranged for the passengers.

    Air France Flight Diverts to Shannon Airport due to Medical Emergency

    Air France flight AF-636 had to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, Ireland, on August 21st.

    The plane heading from Paris, France, to Houston, Texas, was diverted after an infant suffered a medical emergency.

    The plane landed safely. The baby was rushed to the University Hospital Limerick.

    Qatar Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Vienna

    Qatar Airways flight QR-24 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Vienna, Austria, on November 26th.

    The plane heading from Manchester, England, to Doha, Qatar, was diverted due to an engine fire indication.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    What: Jetblue Airbus A320-200 en route from Newark to Fort Lauderdale
    Where: Newark Liberty International Airport
    When: Apr 5th 2010
    Who: 134 passengers
    Why: During takeoff, the airbus lost the left engine cowling.

    Distressed panicked passengers smelled smoke and said they could see inside the engine.

    Less than a quarter of an hour later, it had landed back at the airport, where the fallen parts had to be gathered.

    The NY Daily news reported that passengers were offered refunds and a free round trip.

    American Airlines Encounters Turbulence

    What: American Airlines en route from New York to Brussels
    Where: Boston
    When: August 22, 2010
    Who: 159 passengers, 9 crew
    Why: While en route, twenty minutes into the flight, they encountered severe turbulence stemming from thunderstorms in the eastern seaboard. The situation at JFK was problematic.

    The pilot diverted to Logan Airport in Boston where they made a safe landing.

    Lost or Imaginary Plane Crash

    Where: a wooded area around Buckeye Road in Manatee County, Florida
    When: Thursday evening.
    Who: unknown
    Why: No holds were barred as emergency and rescue teams searched for a reported crash. Manatee Fire Rescue, Hillsborough Aviation and Coast Guard Aviation unsuccessfully searched a three mile radius.
