    Vietnam Airlines and Boeing Team to Enhance 777 Passenger Experience

    SEATTLE, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Boeing (NYSE: BA) and Vietnam Airlines have teamed on a key initiative to upgrade the level of comfort for Vietnam Airlines’ passengers, unveiling the carrier’s latest cabin interior modernization on four of the airline’s 777-200ERs. Vietnam Airlines will improve its passenger service with an increased focus on the overall passenger experience and comfort while continuing to expand the network and add new destinations.

    In support of Vietnam Airlines’ goals, Boeing Commercial Aviation Services developed a cabin layout that meets the discerning needs of the airline and its passengers, and also provided the engineering services and program integration as well as managing the worldwide group of suppliers that Vietnam Airlines selected for the program.

    Boeing produced the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration-certified service bulletin and kit of parts to accommodate the relocation of business class seats; installation of new deluxe economy and economy class passenger seats; and revisions to the in-flight entertainment system, in-seat power and cabin cooling systems. Boeing also relocated and updated lavatories, galleys, ceilings, sidewalls, lighting, plumbing and the lower lobe attendant crew rest modules to enable the expanded service planned for these 777s.

    The first aircraft was recently completed and Vietnam Airlines has proudly re-introduced the aircraft into service.

    Press Release – Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers Share Safety Data

    WASHINGTON — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today announced a safety program that for the first time will integrate voluntary safety information self-reported by pilots and air traffic controllers. This data-sharing program will give the FAA a more complete picture of the national airspace system by collecting, assessing and reviewing safety events from the perspective of both pilots and air traffic controllers.

    United Airlines and its pilots have the first agreement in place to participate in a demonstration program. The FAA expects to sign similar agreements with other carriers in the future.

    “Safety is our number-one priority,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Having pilots and controllers provide information abut potential air safety problems will help us correct them before they become accidents.”

    “This revolutionary program will give us an incredible amount of data that will help us find problems, make corrections and avoid incidents,” said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt. “I applaud air traffic controllers, pilots and airlines for their dedication to keeping our aviation system as safe as possible.”

    For the first time, information from the Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) and the Air Traffic Safety Action Program (ATSAP) will be merged, so input from both pilots and controllers can help guide safety decisions. The program will develop processes and policies to share and analyze relevant safety information in a non-punitive way, consistent with the basic principles of Safety Management Systems. These systems are widely used within the FAA and the aviation industry.

    ASAP encourages aviation employees to voluntarily report safety information that may help identify potential precursors to accidents. The ASAP process resolves safety issues through corrective action rather than through punishment or discipline. Each program is based on a safety partnership that includes the FAA and the aviation operator, and usually includes a third party, such as the reporting employee’s labor organization. In today’s agreement, the airline’s labor organization is the United chapter of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). Today, 73 air carriers have 169 ASAP programs for pilots, mechanics, flight attendants, and dispatchers.

    ATSAP is an agreement between the FAA and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) that is designed to foster a voluntary, cooperative, non-punitive environment for FAA air traffic employees to openly report safety concerns As a result of ATSAP, all parties have access to valuable safety information that otherwise might never have been discovered or reported. The FAA analyzes the information to develop skill enhancements or system corrective actions that will help solve safety problems.

    Voluntary reporting programs have significantly contributed to the nation’s impressive aviation safety record, including improvements to training and enhanced operations and maintenance procedures.

The three-day hearing will convene at 9:00 a.m. on May 12, 2009 at the NTSB’s Board Room and Conference Center, 429 L’Enfant Plaza, S.W., Washington, D.C.     HAMPTON, Va. – In a little more than a week NASA’s next flight test, called Pad Abort-1, will lift off from the pad at the U.S. Army’s White Sands Missile Range, near Las Cruces, N.M.

    A team from NASA’s Langley Research Center will travel to support the test, scheduled for May 6.

    On Thursday, April 29, from 1 to 3 p.m., local media are invited to interview launch abort system (LAS) manager Kevin Rivers and chief engineer David McGowan before they travel to White Sands. Media should contact Amy Johnson at 757-864-7022 by noon Wednesday, April 28, if they would like to schedule an interview during that time.

    The LAS was designed to offer a safe, reliable method of removing the astronaut crew from danger should an emergency occur on the launch pad or during the vehicle’s climb to orbit. It employs ground-breaking rocket technology never tested before. The development of the Orion launch abort system is led by NASA Langley in partnership with Marshall Space Flight Center. Langley also designed and produced the crew module simulator that will be used for the flight test

    PA-1 is the first fully integrated test of the launch abort system that was developed for the Orion crew exploration vehicle as part of an ongoing mission to develop safer vehicles for human spaceflight applica¬tions. The Pad Abort-1 vehicle consists of a tower-like launch abort system positioned over a simulated crew module. For the test, the vehicle will be launched by its abort motor to a height of approximately one mile and approximately one mile downrange.
