IATA Announces Femke Sickler Winner of 2018 FACE-UP Competition

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the trade association for the world’s airlines, representing some 280 airlines or 83% of total air traffic. We support many areas of aviation activity and help formulate industry policy on critical aviation issues.

Winner of 2018 FACE-UP Competition

Geneva – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that Femke Sickler a recent graduate of Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands was the recipient of the IATA FACE-UP award for 2018. FACE-UP is a competition for recent university graduates whose thesis is on the subject of innovation and transformation in air transport logistics (e.g. air cargo, supply chain management, mobility, IT solutions, etc.).

Sickler’s thesis addressed improving the air cargo value chain with regard to the acceptance process, trucking schedule and data communication. The award was presented at the 12th World Cargo Symposium (WCS) in Dallas.
“Among many worthy candidates I congratulate Femke Sickler for an outstanding achievement. It is great to see the next generation of air cargo professionals helping to drive the innovation that is needed in the global air cargo industry,” said Glyn Hughes, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo.

A senior panel of judges from across the industry selected three finalists who presented at the WCS closing plenary for the audience to nominate the ultimate winner of the FACE-UP competition. The finalists were selected based on showing innovation and also the potential to transform air cargo. Danny Jonker (Maastricht University) and Caroline Larisch (Maastricht University) made up the trio of finalists.

The biennial IATA FACE-UP competition is the first installment of its kind. The initiative is part of IATA’s Future Air Cargo Executives (FACE) Program which was launched in 2013 with the aim of attracting, retaining and developing a bright and diverse pool of young talent, preparing them to become the next generation of leaders in the cargo industry.

    Netherlands Helicopter Crash at Sea

    On May 8, 2013, Cessna 172P was on a photo flight over the North Sea when it crashed at sea in foggy weather near the town of Egmond, Netherlands. Around 9:00 pm, the pilot had sent a distress signal.

    A military helicopter and an offshore helicopter responded to the alarm. There was dense fog with visibility of 50 meters.

    The pilot and passenger were rescued from water at 10 degrees Celsius. The pilot is a 71-year-old man from the North Holland Sint Maartensvlotbrug, and was unconscious when he was picked up and transported to hospital in Den Helder. The pilot later died of hypothermia.

    The 48 year old passenger was picked up from Bussum by boat and admitted to an Amsterdam hospital.

    Scandinavian Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Amsterdam

    Scandinavian Airlines flight SK-4743 made an emergency landing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on May 29th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane heading from Oslo, Norway, to Brussels, Belgium, was diverted after the crew noticed smoke in the cabin.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    KLM Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Amsterdam

    KLM flight KL-891 had to return and make an emergency landing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on December 10th.

    The Boeing 787-900 plane took off for Chengdu, China, but had to turn back after one of the engines stalled.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    British Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Amsterdam

    British Airways flight BA-438 made an emergency landing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on April 14th.

    The Airbus A321-200 plane flying from Heathrow Airport, England, was on final approach to Amsterdam when the crew reported a nose gear steering issue and went around.

    The plane subsequently landed uneventfully and was towed to the apron.

    Everyone aboard remained safe.

    Delta Airlines Plane Makes Emergency Landing at JFK Airport

    250px-Delta_logo.svgDelta Airlines flight DL-164 made an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, on May 3rd.

    The plane was en-route from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Amsterdam, Netherlands, when the crew received an engine filter indication and declared an emergency.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    The passengers were accommodated in other flights.

    KLM Cityhopper Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Amsterdam

    KLM Cityhopper flight KL-981 made an emergency landing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on November 23rd.

    The Embraer ERJ-190 plane took off for London City Airport, England, but had to return after the crew noticed smell of smoke in the cabin.

    The plane landed back uneventfully. All passengers and crew members remained safe.
