Lufthansa flight LH-401 had to return and make an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, on February 22nd.
The Boeing 747-800 plane took off for Frankfurt, Germany, but had to turn back due to an engine failure.
The plane landed uneventfully. All one hundred and twenty-seven passengers aboard remained safe.

What: Delta Airlines Boeing 757-300 en route from Detroit to Phoenix
Where: Colorado Springs
When: Dec 30, 2010
Who: 225 passengers
Why: While en route from Detroit to Phoenix, the plane’s right engine developed engine problems. The pilot shut down the affected engine and diverted to Colorado Springs where they made a safe landing 3/4 of an hour later. On landing, however, one of the wheel-wells overheated when the landing gear caught fire.
Passengers evacuated via emergency slides, which resulted in two injured passengers. The injured were hospitalized.
The rest of the passengers were to be booked on alternative flights.

What: Merpati Nusantara Airlines Boeing 737-300 en route from Sarong to Manokwari West Papua. (Sorong-Dominique Edward Osok Airport to Rendani Airport)

Why: While landing at Rendani in heavy fog and rain, the flight overshot the runway and/or hydroplaned on the wet runway, lost a wing in a forest at the end of the runway and partially ended up with the tail suspended in river shallows. The fuselage split in two. No one was trapped; everyone got out alive. Reports of injury vary, from 80 minor injuries to 20 individuals who sustained varying degrees of injury (broken bones and head injury), one who had facial injury and trouble breathing.
Merpati is on the banned list. Nevertheless, Merpati spokesmen say this was entirely due to weather and not pilot error.

The Fighter Wing F-16 landed safely around 10:20 a.m. The tanks were 3/4 full, and are capable of carrying 370 gallons. Procedures are underway to retrieve the tanks.
United Airlines flight UA-3733 made an emergency landing in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on May 24th.
The plane heading from Omaha, Nebraska, to Houston, Texas, was diverted due to a pressurization problem.
The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
SEATTLE, Jan. 27, 2011 — Boeing Training & Flight Services has signed a long-term agreement with Blue1 to provide 717 training capabilities in Stockholm, Sweden, beginning the first quarter of 2011. Blue1 is a Scandinavian Airlines’ subsidiary based in Helsinki, Finland.
“Enhancing safe and efficient flight operations, with cost-effective solutions implemented closer to our customer’s home bases is our main priority,” said Roei Ganzarski, chief customer officer, Boeing Training & Flight Services. “Through this partnership with Blue1, we are bringing our 717 training programs closer to our customers.”
Blue1 operates five Boeing 717s with an additional four scheduled to enter its fleet by the end of March 2011. “As we transitioned to the 717, it became increasingly clear that we would benefit from a regional 717 training solution,” said Mr. Heikki Setala, head of Flight Operations, Blue1. “Boeing, as the original manufacturer of our airplanes, was wholly supportive of our needs and provided an overall cost-reducing solution.”
The European Aviation Safety Agency-certified 717 full-flight simulator will be relocated from Boeing’s Atlanta campus to a training center in Stockholm. Boeing will continue to support its customers with 717 solutions in North America and Asia Pacific.
Under the terms of the agreement, Boeing continues to hold the exclusive license to market the Stockholm-based 717 training capacity to third parties.
Boeing Training & Flight Services offers comprehensive training solutions worldwide through its global network of campuses and other locations that best serve its customers’ needs.
The Boeing 717 is a proven and reliable 100-seat jetliner, with more than 125 in active service with airlines today.

Where: on Interstate 87, close to the town of North Hudson, near Lake Placid.

Why: While a student was flying, the engine started clicking; then there was an explosion and a power loss. The instructor landed on the highway’s center lane with minima. clearance of surrounding guardrails. Flight instructor Michael Denning has gotten significant accolades for his skilled response.
