    ExpressJet Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Newport News

    ExpressJet flight DL-5381 had to make an emergency landing in Newport News, Virginia, on July 9th.

    The plane flying from Atlanta, Georgia, was on approach to Newport News when the crew reported a possible nose gear steering issue and declared an emergency.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    What: Continental Airlines Boeing 737 en route from San Antonio to Houston
    Where: San Antonio
    When: Apr 28, 2011
    Who: 151 aboard
    Why: The plane had taken off and developed a “strong chemical odor.” The pilots returned to San Antonio International Airport and made a safe landing; however they did not know the cause of the odor and for caution’s sake, took the plane to the “ramp” area. Several passengers developed respiratory distress.

    The crew boarding wore hazmat suits. The source of the chemical odor was not identified.

    Airbus Eats Bird over Glasgow

    What: Thomas Cook Airlines Airbus A330-200, en route from Glasgow,SC (UK) to Dalaman (Turkey)
    Where: Manchester
    When: May 3rd 2009
    Who: 322 passengers and 11 crew
    Why: Over Glasgow, the left hand engine apparently ingested a bird; subsequently, the plane suffered failure of the left hand engine while departing (climbing over) Glasgow, then suffered slat failure. The crew was able to shut down the engine and land in Manchester

    Transavia Flight Makes Emergency Landing at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

    Transavia flight HV-6757 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, Netherlands, on July 16th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane heading from Groningen, Netherlands, to Palma, Majorca, Spain, was diverted due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Southwest Airlines Flight Returns to Nashville After Bird Strike

    Southwest Airlines flight WN-577 had to return and make an emergency landing in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 18th.

    The Boeing 737-700 plane took off for Phoenix, Arizona, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed safely. All seventy people aboard remained unharmed.

    Sriwijaya Air Flight Delayed by Hydraulic Issues

    What: Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-400 en route from Surabaya to Jakarta
    Where: Juanda International Airport
    When: October 24, 2012 6:30 a.m.
    Who: 115 passengers
    Why: The Sriwijaya flight returned to Juanda International Airport after a ten minute flight after the plane developed a problem with its hydraulics. No one was injured.

    Repairs were made to the plane.

    Passengers reboarded and took off for Jakarta at 1 pm that same day.
