    South African Airways Flight Returns to JFK Airport

    southafricanairwaysSouth African Airways flight SA-204 had to return and make an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, on December 3rd.

    The plane took off for Johannesburg, South Africa, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew failed to retract the flaps.

    The plane dumped excess fuel before it landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    American Airlines First Officer Dies During Landing in Albuquerque

    American Airlines flight AA-1353 made an emergency landing in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on March 29th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane flying from Dallas–Fort Worth, Texas, was on final approach when the captain declared a medical emergency saying, “We’ve got an issue with one of the pilots.”

    The plane continued for a safe landing. Emergency services performed CPR on the first officer, however, could not save his life.

    The deceased first officer was identified as William “Mike” Grubbs, 58.

    The incident is being investigated.

    Why: Shortly after takeoff from Mumbai, the gear failed to retract. The plane returned to the airport for a safe landing, where passengers debarked–also safely–to board alternative transportation.

    Thomas Cook Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Computer Issues

    Thomas Cook Airlines flight MT1054 had to return and make an emergency landing in East Midlands, England, on July 9th.

    The Airbus A321-200 plane took off for Larnaca, Cyprus, but had to return shortly afterwards due to issues with the onboard computers.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Injured Flight Attendent Delays Plane

    Why: A flight attendant injured boarding was further injured when the flight encountered turbulence. The flight diverted to Port Columbus and made a safe landing where the fight attendant was seen by paramedics and transported to Grant Medical Center. US Airways has no base of operations in Port Columbus; and passengers endured a lengthy wait aboard the plane as USAirways searched for a replacement flight attendant. The flight resumed at 5:15 after a replacement attendant was found .

    Lufthansa Flight Returns to Poland due to Unusual Odor On-Board

    Lufthansa flight LH-1365 had to return and make an emergency landing in Krakow, Poland, on January 11th.

    The Airbus A319-100 plane took off for Frankfurt, Germany, but had to turn back due to an unusual odor on-board.

    The plane landed safely. All forty passengers aboard remained unharmed.
