GOL Announces Commercial Agreement with Passaredo Linhas Aereas

GOL adds six cities to its route network with Passaredo’s routes, which will be available in its sale channels

SAO PAULO, Dec. 21, 2010 -FirstCall/ — GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes S.A., the largest low-cost and low-fare airline in Latin America, has signed a commercial agreement to sell, in all its sales channels, tickets of Passaredo Linhas Aereas, a Brazilian domestic airline that recorded growth of 130.89% last year.

Passaredo currently operates 103 flights to 20 destinations in Brazil. As a result of the agreement, GOL will add the cities of Marilia, Ribeirao Preto, Sao Jose de Rio Preto (Sao Paulo), Barreiras, Vitoria da Conquista (Bahia) and Ji-Parana (Rondonia) to its route network. GOL, operating through Passaredo, also offers eight new direct flights, including Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul) to Goiania (Goias) and Uberlandia (Minas Gerais) to Rio de Janeiro (Santos Dumont Airport).

GOL passengers connecting with Passaredo flights will only need to check-in once and their baggage will go directly to the final destination.

Based in Ribeirao Preto, Passaredo Linhas Aereas began operations in 1995. Its fleet currently comprises 15 aircraft – five Embraer EMB-120s and ten Embraer ERJ-145 jets, with a capacity for 30 and 50 passengers, respectively. By July 2011, however, it will be operating 23 aircraft, with the addition of eight already contracted ERJ-145s.

“This is a strategic agreement for GOL because Passaredo is a well-known regional airline which will add important destinations to our route network, improving our penetration and offering our passengers new direct flight options”, declared Claudia Pagnano, GOL’s Market Vice-President.
The routes will be handled by all GOL’s sales channels, available for purchase up to the day before the flight. The agreement does not include the accumulation of SMILES mileage on Passaredo flights.

For Captain Felicio, the CEO of Passaredo Linhas Aereas, the company is assuming a strategic position in the market. “GOL is an excellent partner. We believe in a strong regional aviation market, where we will be operating with penetration for one of the leading airlines in Latin America. This is the system they use in North America and Europe”, he concluded.

Boeing 777 Freighter Completes 2 Years in Service

EVERETT, Wash., Feb. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Hauling everything from giant panda bears to high-performance race cars the Boeing 777 freighter in its first two years in service is earning the reputation as the work horse of the industry.

The growing fleet of 777 freighters has flown approximately 120,000 hours and boasts a daily utilization rate of 11.34 hours. Fleet schedule reliability is at 99.37 percent, which means the freighter has a near-perfect record of on-time takeoff and landings. Eighty-three have been ordered, and 39 freighters now are in service with nine airlines.

FedEx Express is the largest 777 freighter operator with a fleet of 11 currently in operation, and another airplane just delivered. An additional 13 777 freighters remain in Boeing’s backlog for FedEx.

“The world’s longest range twin-engine freighter is elevating our high level of service to customers around the world,” said James R. Parker, executive vice president of FedEx Express Air Operations. “Our customers are enjoying the nonstop 777 flights that offer them the latest cutoff times in key manufacturing centers in China, an advantage unmatched by the competition.”

Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates airline, now operates two 777 freighters. The airplane is playing an integral role in Emirates’ freighter fleet due to the airplane’s long-range capability.

“Emirates has opted for these brand new, super-efficient aircraft to ensure we are best placed to serve the industry’s requirements in the long term,” said Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President Cargo Ram Menen. “We are absolutely delighted with this airplane!”

The 777 freighter is the world’s longest-range, twin-engine freighter and features the lowest trip cost of any large freighter, with high-cargo density and 10-foot (3.1-meter) interior height capability that complements the popular 747 freighter family.

Providing cargo capacity normally associated with larger airplanes, the 777 freighter can fly 4,900 nautical miles (9,070 kilometers) with a full payload of 225,200 pounds (102 metric tons). The 777 freighter is powered by General Electric’s GE90-110B1L and meets QC2 noise standards.

“The 777 freighter is a great example of how Boeing is committed to continuously improving the 777 family to deliver top value to owners and operators,” said Larry Loftis, vice president and general manager of the 777 program.

Boeing is the air cargo industry leader, using its expertise to support customers in their success and to promote the industry. The company also offers the most complete family of freighters, which provide superior efficiency and operational economics in support of airline profitability.

    Turbulence over Kochi

What: Emirates Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from Dubai to Kochi India
    Where: Bangalore
    When: Apr 25th 2010
Who: 350 passengers and 14 crew
Why: Prior to landing at Kochi, the plane encountered severe turbulence which resulted in 20 people being hospitalized. At the time of the turbulence, baggage fell from overhead hatches, and those not belted slammed upward. The flight landed at Kochi and was removed from service for ten hours. All injuries were minor.

Two theories have been presented involving the turbulence. Meteorologists speculate that “the aircraft could have flown into an air pocket.”

Another theory is that “…World Area Forecast centre wind/temperature charts did not reveal thunderstorm cloudd, but it showed a slight wind shear condition off the coast of Mangalore. At 35,000 feet, the chart shows strong westerly wind with a speed of 60 kts dropping to 25-30 kts. It’s one of the indicators of clear air turbulence (CAT).’’

There are reports that say the plane suffered some damage after dropping from 20,000 to 5,000 feet.
