    South African Airbus Turbulence Injures 28 over #Malaysia

    southafricanairwaysSouth African Airways Flight SA286, an Airbus A340-313X, was en route from OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, South Africa, near the city of Johannesburg to Hong Kong International Airport when it encountered severe turbulence four hours from Hong Kong while over Malaysia. The plane suffered cabin damage.

    Three crew and twenty-five passengers were tossed out of their seats and into the ceiling. THere were 163 passengers aboard. Fourteen ambulances waited at Chek Lap Kok airport to transport the injured to North Lantau Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital and Yan Chai Hospital. Two people are still hospitalized.

    Pilots continued to Hong Kong and made a priority landing.

    Malaysian authorities will be assisting the Civil Aviation Department in the investigation.

    *A priority landing means that the incident leads to the aircraft being given landing priority by the airport where it is about to land.

    United Airlines Flight Diverts to Shannon Airport due to Medical Emergency

    United Airlines flight UA-946 had to divert for an emergency landing at Shannon Airport, Ireland, on January 20th.

    The plane flying from Washington Dulles International Airport, Virginia, to Amsterdam, Netherlands, was diverted after the captain became unconscious.

    The plane, carrying 82 passengers and 12 crew members, landed safely.

    The captain was rushed to a hospital.

    Where: Palm Beach International Airport
    When: March 11, 2010 11 a.m
    Who: 2 flight attendants (3?)
    Why: Encountering heavy turbulence on landing at Palm Beach International Airport, the crew requested Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue for two injured flight attendants. No passengers were hurt, but the flight attendants were taken to Columbia Hospital.

    Airbus Instrument Failure Behind Emergency Landing in Greece

    What: Saudi Arabian Airlines Airbus A330-300 en route from Jeddah to Paris
    Where: Athens
    When: Jul 14 2011
    Who: 168 (?) 187 aboard
    Why: While en route, the Airbus experienced instrument failure. The pilot decided to divert to Greece.

    The pilot made an visual (ILS?) approach to Athens airport, with its instruments inoperable.

    The plane made a safe landing with no injuries reported. After maintenance went over the plane, it was back in the air within five or six hours.

    On July 12, a Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 777 en route from Washington to Riad made an emergency landing in Athens due to instruments indicating a fire in the luggage compartment. (No fire was found.) according to Thailand News Agency.

    Delta Airlines Flight Returns to Pensacola After Engine Failure

    Delta Airlines flight DL-2179 had to return and make an emergency landing in Pensacola, Florida, on August 25th.

    The plane took off for Atlanta, Georgia, but had to turn back due to an engine failure.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Engine Issues Forced Emergency Landing at Philadelphia International Airport

    US AirwaysA US Airways Express jet, operated by Republic Airlines, had to return and make an emergency landing at Philadelphia International Airport, Pennsylvania, on the morning of December 29.

    The Embraer 175 aircraft took off from Philadelphia for Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, New Hampshire, but had to turn back just minutes later, due to an engine problem. Some passengers reported that they heard a loud boom and saw fiery flashes shooting out of the plane.

    The plane landed safely and all 75 passengers and 4 crew members remained unharmed.

    The airline accommodated the passengers in another flight while the plane was taken for examination.
