What: Continental Airlines Flight 3407, Bombardier Q400 turboprop operated by regional carrier Colgan Air en route from Newark, New Jersey to Buffalo Niagara International Airport
    Where: Clarence Center, New York.
When: Thursday Feb 12 struck a house at 10: 10 pm. Two homes were affected.
Who: 44 passengers and four crew members, 1 off-duty pilot, 1 person on the ground, all fatalities. The passenger manifest has not officially been released.
Why: The New Jersey-to-Buffalo flight was cleared to land on a runway pointing to the southwest. But the plane crashed with its nose pointed to the northeast. Seconds after two automatic warnings to the pilots that the plane was not moving fast enough to stay aloft, the twin turboprop aircraft went through a “severe pitch and roll” after positioning its flaps for a landing. It did not dive into the house, as initially thought, but landed flat on the house. Icing is emerging as the possible cause for why flight 3047 fell from the sky. The flight data recorder has been collected and is currently being examined.

Week of Mishaps for Israel’s El AL Airline

EL ALEl Al Israel Airlines has probably had the toughest week in its history due to a series of consecutive unfortunate incidents.

On May 15, the EL Al flight 289, en route from Tel Aviv to Venice, had to make emergency landing in Dubrovnik, Croatia, after its first officer passed out on the controls.

A few hours later on the same day, it was reported that another EL AL flight, bound from New York to Tel Aviv, was delayed by 4 hours. The delay was caused after some kids damaged the aircraft’s door.

In another incident, a cracked windshield forced the Brussels-bound EL AL flight 333 to return and make emergency landing at Tel Aviv.

The latest in the series is the May 20’s incident when unexpectedly, the oxygen masks deployed in a plane operated by El Al’s subsidiary ‘Up’, shortly before it took off. The passengers were then shifted to another plane which left the airport after a 3 hours delay.

Air Canada Airbus A333 Diverted for Illness and Bad Manners

    George’s Point of View

Sometimes you really have to wonder what air travel is coming to–especially when you hear about the Air Canada Airbus (you know I keep an eye on those Airbuses)–that stopped for a medical emergency. That’s not the big thing–the big thing is after the medical emergency, we had yet ANOTHER person whose basic bad manners caused enough disruption for the authorities to be called. Apparently a Toronto TV and radio host decided to pitch a fit on the plane. Drunk, cussing and escorted off by police to sleep it off in the drunk tank. I prefer my flights without that kind of live entertainment, thank you very much. Maybe the airlines should start giving a little deportment test before every flight, and those who flunk have to go to a session of charm school NOT run by Larry King.

I started to put up a new category, “cracked passenger” right above “cracked windshield” but decided to settle for “disruptive passenger.”

And below, for those who are here for the aircraft, please note the plane, when it is in operation and NOT boarded by publicity hounds.

    * This incident is NOT to be confused with Robert McDonald, of Glasgow, who opened an emergency exit hatch as his flight waited out two and a half hours of bad weather delay at JFK.

    * OR Southwest Flight 1402 where a large woman started pummeling someone for touching her

    * OR American Airlines Flight 1343 from Charlotte to Dallas/Fort Worth where a man ran and jumped into a plane to slide down the the inflatable exit slides
