- Because of the September 14 crash of the Russian Aeroflot-Nord while preparing to land in the city of Perm in the Ural Mountains area, the Russian Federal Air Transportation Agency has suspended the use of a subtype of Boeing 737-500s until their pilots receive additional training.
- The training involves a key indicator showing the plane’s attitude, ( artificial horizon) The attitude indicator is designed differently on Soviet and Western planes. Investigators have not yet determined what caused the crash, but the pilot had little experience in piloting Boeings, so the speculation is that the cause was pilot error.
- Notification of the ban has been sent to six air companies, including Aeroflot-Nord, Aeroflot-Don and Volga-Dnepr
- Russian carrier Aeroflot-Nord has also temporarily suspended operations with a Boeing 737-300 because its instrument panel includes indicators similar to those on the 737-500. Tthe cockpit of the VP-BKT features “special” director-indicator pointers on complex flight-control and navigational instruments.
- The Urals city lab is conducting DNA identification the 88 victims of the September 14 Boeing 737 crash in Perm. The workload has caused such a backlog that it is delaying work on the comparison of DNA samples from Nicholas II’s blood-stained shirt and bone fragments.

Wellington Florida Plane Crash
A Sonex, a two-seat homebuilt kit plane crashed into a lake at Greenbriar Dog Park a mile from Wellington Aero Club, killing the one person aboard the plane. The pilot, Leonard “Link” McGarity had been practicing “touch and goes” The accident occurred on Feb 17 in the morning. By 12:55 rescue crews were on the scene but unable to assist as the pilot died at the scene. McGarity was a longtime professional pilot who flew for American Airlines and Marine helicopters, and had a residence at Wellington Aero Club.
Prior to the crash, witnesses heard the plane sputter.
The Wellington Aero Club is a community built around a runway. A neighbor who is a seasoned aviator was quoted saying of McGarity, “If this happened to him, it’s something wrong with the plane, not him. He knew what he was doing.”

Military Training Crash in Yemen, 18 injured, 12 fatalities
During a training exercise, a Yemeni military fighter jet crashed in Sana’a, Yemen, killing the pilot—although one report says the pilot ejected. Witnesses hearing a loud explosion on impact, and report black smoke. The pilot was named as Mohamed Shaker. In addition to the pilot, there were 12 fatalities and 18 injuries.
The pilot was returning to base after a training mission and requested authorization to land when the aircraft lost altitude and crashed.
The plane was a Russian SU-22 that struck three buildings in al-Qadissiya near Change Square. It struck a building on Rabat Avenue, then hit another and ended up on a third building. Several cars were on fire. Five bodies that were recovered were burned beyond recognition.
All of the victims were civilians and included three women and two children. Several ambulances responded. Some reports said they took a long time to arrive.
An investigation is underway.
Southern Utah Crash Kills Pilot
What: home built single-engine plane en route to Las Vegas
Where: near the Parowan airport about 1 mile north of the runway on private property.
When: Saturday 1:45 p.m
Who: Pilot William Phillips, 59 and wife 52-year-old Janice Phillips, a Vegas couple with a cabin in Iron County
Why: Pilot experienced mechanical problems shortly after takeoff. Witnesses also reported the plane making noises that indicated a mechanical problem. The pilot was alive when deputies arrived at the scene but died a few minutes later. Passenger suffered broken bones and internal injuries and was “LifeFlighted” to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. Investigating deputies are Tony Gower and Nate Houchen.
Small Plane Crash Took Lives of Two Utah Brothers
A single- engine Cessna 172 crashed in Mohave County of northern Arizona, near the Utah-Arizona border at about 7:30 p.m. on July 20.
Two brothers, Daulton Whatcott, 19 and Jaxon Whatcott, 16, were killed in the crash. Both of them were students of Syracuse High School; Jaxon was about to begin in junior year this fall while Daulton recently graduated in 2013. Whatcott family spokeswoman Taunie Reynolds confirmed the unfortunate deaths and said that Daulton had recently received pilot license and he was flying his brother to Las Vegas for a basketball tournament.
The Mohave County sheriff’s office said that the accident happened just south of Virgin River Gorge, near Interstate 15 and about 25 miles southwest of St. George in Utah. The plane was en route to Mesquite, Nevada from Beaver, Utah at the time.
According to the FAA records, the plane was registered to D&G Aircraft Leasing in Bountiful, Utah.
The FAA and the NTSB are investigating the cause of accident.

Associated Jet Crash in Nigeria
On Oct 3, 2013, a twenty-three year old Associated Aviation Embraer EMB-120 was en route from Lagos to Akure to carry the deceased regional governor and family to his funeral in Akure.
The Embraer developed engine trouble on take-off. (The failed engine was a Pratt & Whitney.) The plane struck a wooded area, a wall and came to rest on fire, avoiding a residential area. The flight data recorder has been recovered.
The number of people aboard has not been determined. Some sources say the flight had 20 passengers plus a crew of seven; some sources say only twenty were aboard in all. Fifteen victims lost their lives initially, and one died in the hospital.
The four survivors were hospitalized.
EVEREST Plane Crash 19 Killed

Who: 19 fatalities
Why: After takeoff, the pilot hit a vulture. The pilot attempted to return to the airport. (The vulture strike is unconfirmed.)
Villagers could not assist because of the fire. Firefighters had difficulty reaching the area on the banks of Manohara River in Thimi, just a few kilometers east of Kathmandu.
Four passenger and three crew were from Nepal. Five were Chinese, and seven were British. the remains were taken to the morgue at TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj in Maharajgunj.
The crew who died in the crash were pilot Bijay Tandukar, co-pilot Takesingh Thapa and air-hostess Ruja Shakya.
The passengers were identified were Kumar Marshyangdi Magar (Nepal Army), D Rai, Yangchay Tamang and LN Sherpa. One Britain was identified as Eagle Raymond.
