    Foreign Dignitaries Killed as Military Helicopter Crashed in Pakistan

    A Military helicopter crashed into a school in Naltar, near Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, on May 8.

    The Mi-17 helicopter was transporting foreign dignitaries to the inauguration ceremony of a ski resort chairlift when it crashed and caught fire. Initial investigations reveal that the accident happened due to a mechanical fault in the helicopter.

    There were 17 people aboard the aircraft at the time of the crash. Authorities confirmed that seven of them, including the Norwegian envoy Leif H Larsen, the Philippines ambassador Domingo D Lucenario, the wives of the Indonesian and Malaysian envoys, 2 Pakistan Air Force pilots and one technician, were killed.

    Others, including the Dutch and Polish ambassadors, were injured and were airlifted to a local military hospital.

    Cessna Lands on Model Runway


    What: single-engine Cessna en route from North Carolina to Long Island NY
    Where: Heckscher State Park in East Islip, Long Island NY
    When: April 15, 2012, 4 pm
    Who: pilot and student
    Why: Pilot David J. Jensen and a student were in the single-engine Cessna when it developed engine problems. The pilots made a safe landing on a Heckscher State Park runway normally dedicated to model planes.

    The plane was not allowed to take off from that runway, and was dismantled for removal.

    The incident is under investigation.

    Wind River Mountain Crash Kills Day Family

    What: Condor Aero 998 Commander AC 11 en route from Jasper to Jackson.
    Where: 15 to 20 miles southwest of Lander, near Christina Lake, at an elevation of about 11,700 feet in Wyoming Wind River Mountains
    When: Dec. 22 2010
    Who: pilot Ralph Day, 56; his wife Doris Day, 52; and Connor Day, 12
    Why: The Days operated the Day Forestry Appraisal and Management company, and left Jasper planning to visit Yellowstone and then Alaska for the Iditarod.

    Day’s plane struck the top of a steep ridge three feet deep in snow. The plane was not reported missing, and was not located until a passing plane heard the beacon in Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming,

    A helicopter retrieved the bodies on Saturday.

    Small Plane Crash Kills 3

    What: Bellenca 17-31ATC Super Viking en route From Oregon to Wyoming
    Where: 13 miles East of Ukiah, Oregon
    When: June 12, 2011
    Who: 3 aboard
    Why: The small plane crashed after taking off from Dallesport Washington. The wreckage was found near Ukiah in a remote area set in the mountains. The forest service cut a road into the area to make it accessible. According to reports, two bodies were found; the third was missing but also declared a fatality.

    Helicopter Crash in Mexico Kills 6

    What: Saba Group Helicopter en route from Toluca to Mexico City
    Where: Mina Vieja in Cuajimalpa, near La Marquesa
    When: Jan 10, 2010
    Who: Fatalities included Moises Saba Masri, 46, his father, Alberto Saba Raffoul, and Umberto Saba, also Capt. Armando Fernandez and Judith Casal and Yadel Toachi.
    Why: The helicopter crashed during foggy weather; the tail struck a residence at 85 Melchor Ocampo Street, and the blades struck a tree. Two vehicles were damaged but no one on the ground was injured.

    Nicaragua: Antonov 2 Crash

    What: Fuerza Aérea Nicaragüense Antonov 2
    Where: Managua Nicaragua
    When: 15-OCT-2009
    Why: While on a test flight, the plane crashed during an emergency landing. Engine failure is presumed to be the cause.

    One civilian mechanic is said to have suffered “a minor stroke” during the sharp decline.

    Pilot Captain Angel del Sol Sequeira Cantillo, along with four crew members, co-pilot Captain Silvio Armando Sanabria Herrera and Maria Mendoza Cano Grisli NCO and civilian mechanics Toruño Ernesto Sergio Garcia and Miguel Angel Castro Pineda .
