Gol Linhas Aereas Buyback Under Consideration

The Tam Air crash revealed defects in Brazil’s civil aviation system. The system has been stressed subsequent to air traffic controller strikes and work slowdowns that have been causing mass delays and cancellations and damaged Brazilian airlines.

Gol Linhas Aereas Intelligentes SA shares dropped since Brazil’s deadliest air accident in July, when theTAM passenger jet crashed in Sao Paulo and killed 199 people.

Following the crash, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva responded to pressure by firing the defense minister in charge of civil aviation, and the government is imposing a plan to reduce air traffic at Sao Paulo’s Congonhas airport, the site of the crash and the nation’s busiest airport.

The family-run fund that controls the company announced it is considering a share buyback.

    Radar Failure

    Radar failure over the Amazon is just one among a host of problems plaguing Brazil’s suffering aviation industry. The failure forced Brazilian and International flights to ground or to turn back. This from the country that sent a piece of the fuselage off thinking it was the flight recorder.

    The radar was out from midnight until 2:30 am, and caused by an electrical problem. Travellers found themselves trapped in airports, unable to catch flights home. There was mass confusion in spite of the president’s speech primishing safety measures.

    “Our aviation system, in spite of the investments we have made in expansion and modernization of almost all Brazilian airports, is passing through difficulties,” Silva said. “The security of our aviation system is compatible with all the international standards. We cannot lose sight of this.”

    A new airport location will be chosen within 90 days but will take five years to build and is not a high priority. Congonhas, the nation’s busiest airport, has a slick, short runway considered a likely factor in the crash of the TAM flight that killed nearly 200 people; and the planned repair and remediation does have priority. The crash was the country’s worst disaster until Tuesday’s accident and it exposed widespread problems with the country’s air traffic control system.

    Tam Crash on Take-off Pilot Error

    What: Tam Fokker 100 en route from Sao Paulo to Rio
    Where: residential area 1 mile from Sao Paulo
    When: October 31 1996
    Who: 89 passengers,6 crew and 2 on the ground died.
    Why: Summary: On October 31 1996, about 0545 UTC a Fokker 100, registration PT-MRK, operating as TAM Airlines flight. 402, a shuttle between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, crashed shortly after takeoff from the Congonhas Airport, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The aircraft was destroyed; 89 passengers,6 crew and 2 on the ground died. 3 passengers were Americans .Witnesses reported the aircraft failed to gain altitude after take-off, collided with a tall building and crashed into residential area 1 mile from the end of the departure runway. Pilot error, unfamiliarity with the craft was judged to be partially responsible.

    Plane crashes In Brazilian Neighborhood


    On May 29, 2013, an Aerocomp Comp Air B experimental air craft was in its initial climb in Sorocaba, São Paulo Brazil when it developed problems.

    According to witnesses, the aircraft spun in the air, and attempted to land.

    The pilots tried to land but struck two trees and crashed into two houses in the St. William neighborhood of Sorocaba. The pilot and copilot died at the scene.

    Responding Emergency services included firefighters, military police, Municipal Civil Guard.

    The cause of the accident has not been released. The investigation is optional since this was an experimental plane.

    Pirassununga Training Crash, Crew Lost

    On August 12, 2013, a Smoke Squadron A-29 Super Tucano crashed at around 9:10 a.m. near the Air Force Academy runway in Pirassununga, São Paulo.

    The pilot and co-pilot did not survive.

    The pilots, aviator Captain John and Captain Igor Silva Pivovar, were on a training mission. The Brazilian Air Force is investigating.

    Bhoja Detained; Released; Controlled

    The Arshad Jalil family owns 80% of Bhoja Air. Farooq Bhoja who owns a small percentage of Bhoja Air was detained and questioned after the crash of the Bhoja Air jet Friday. Now Bhoja is on the “control list” forbidden to leave Pakistan. A criminal investigation has been launched, as well as an aviation investigation, and a judicial commission.

    Nadeem Yousufzai of the Civil Aviation Authority denied that political pressure was behind the Bhoja Air’s permit.

    I am just wondering when they arrest the owner of Air Blue, the CAA and the DGCA.

    Is Brazil a One Trick Pony?

    In May, will Tam become the only Brazilian airline flying out of Brazil? If Ocean Air and Varig cancel all their International flights, their fleets of Boeing 737, Ebraer and Folker airplanes will service only Intra-Brazilian destinations.

    Brazil’s aviation safety record is notoriously negative. In 2007, electrical problems shut down Brazilian airspace for 2½ hours. Brazil diverted incoming flights to return to their respective points of origin or unscheduled landings at airports from Chile to Puerto Rico. (This was subsequent to the Sao Paulo Airbus A320 TAM Airlines Flight 3054 crash, but it was by no means the first disaster.) The last couple of years,in fact, Brazil’s entire civil aviation system has been in crisis, suffering from safety issues, air traffic controller strikes as well as flight cancellations and delays. The so-called “Apagão Aéreo” (Aerial blackout) followed the Gol Flight 1907 mid-air collision.

    The four CINDACTA, or “Centro Integrado de Defesa Aérea e Controle de Tráfego Aéreo (Integrated Air Traffic Control and Air Defense Centers) are run by the Brazilian Air Force. The government’s Tribunal de Contas da União (Union Accounting Tribunal) holds the Brazilian Government responsible for the disastrous record, due in part to Pan American World Airways Flight 202 ( April 28, 1952), VASP Flight 168 ( June 8, 1982), Varig Flight 254 ( September 3 1989), and TAM Transportes Aéreos Regionais Flight 402 (October 31, 1996), among others.
