    Indian Rescue Chopper Crashes During Flood Evacuation


    On Jun 25, 2013, an Indian Air Force Mil Mi-17 V5 newly acquired helicopter was on a rescue/medical mission assisting victims of floods in Northern India when it crashed in bad weather (rain and fog). An Indian newspaper says there were 19 aboard, including NDRF, ITBP and IAF personnel.

    The helicopter was from Barrackpore Air Force Station in West Bengal under the Eastern Air Command.

    The helicopter crashed near the pilgrimage site of Gaurikund. Flash floods in the area are having dire consequences.

    According to one report, eight bodies were recovered, five of whom were crew. There appear to be no survivors of the crash.

    At the time of the crash, the helicopter was on it’s third run. more than 7,500 people are reported as being still stranded by the flooding in the hills of Uttarakhand. Buildings are being washed away, and roads flooded.

    A court of Inquiry has been convened to investigate the cause of the helicopter crash. The flight recorder has been recovered.

    A later report amends 19 to 20 aboard. Twenty bodies have been recovered. The air chief marshal offered condolences on the death of 5 IAF, 6 Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) 9 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel who died.

    Air Force officials said their personnel on the chopper that crashed were: Wg Cdr Darryl Castelino, Flt Lt. K Praveen, Flt Lt Tapan Kapoor, JWO A.K. Singh and Sgt Sudhakar Yadav.

    The NDRF personnel were: Commandant Nitya Nand Gupta, 48, resident of Kanpur; Inspector Bhim Singh, 49, resident of Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir; Sub Inspector Satish Kumar, 44, resident of Bhiwani in Haryana; Constable K. Vinaygan, 28, resident of Chitoor in Andhra Pradesh; Constable Bassavaraj Yaragatti, 31, resident of Gadag in Karnataka; Constable Santosh Kumar Paswan, 24, resident of Koderma in Jharkhand; Constable Sanjiva Kumar, 27, resident of Balia in Uttar Pradesh; Constable Shashi Kant Ramesh Pawar, 31, resident of Dhulia in Maharashtra; and Constable Ahir Rao Ganesh, 32, resident of Jalgaon in Maharashtra.

    The six ITBP personnel were: Commandant Nand Ram, 27, Sub Inspector Jayender Prasad, 55, Constable Jomon P.G., 26, Constable Bibhuti Roy, 26, Constable Sarvesh Kumar, 31, and Constable Ajay Lal, 23.

    Helicopter Crash in Florida; 2 Injured

    A privately owned helicopter crashed into trees on Curle Road, Eustis, Lake County, Florida, on September 25.

    The helicopter, flying from Umatilla Municipal Airport, Florida, crashed after the pilot encountered some problem in its engine.

    The 2 people aboard sustained injuries and were airlifted to hospital.

    The incident is being investigated.

    Helicopter Crashes killing 10

    Who: 10 aboard
    Why: The helicopter was engaged in searching for a group of suspected drug traffickers in southwestern Apure state.

    Wing Ripped off Crashing Tupolev Kyrgyzstan, Jet Rolls, No Fatalities

    What: Kyrgyzstan/Altyn Air Tupolev 134A-3 en route from Bishkek to Osh
    Where: Osh Airport, Kyrgyzstan
    When: 28 DEC 2011
    Who: 6 crew, 82 passengers, 25 injured
    Why: After a hard landing in dense fog, the plane skidded off the runway, collapsing the right main gear, and flipped. As it rolled over, the right wing separated, and the ensuing fire was quickly contained by rescue services standing by. Passengers inside were hanging upside down, suspended by their seatbelts, but had to find a way to evacuate quickly, before the plane had a chance to explode. A fire occurred from a fuel leak in the remaining wing, but it was controlled.

    The metar at the time of the landing was:

    Six crew members and nineteen passengers were hospitalized, but there were no fatalities reported. Nine children were aboard. The plane was evacuated.

    Because of the incident, the airport (runway) was temporarily closed, and Osh-Bishkek flights are delayed.

    Of the 25 reported injured and hospitalized, these have been identified: Rustamov A. b. 1977, Ismatova A. b. 1993, Turgunaliev Charles b.1960; and two injured, Mamatov A., born 1992, and Suyunbaeva A. 2011g.r. who are in a children’s hospital in Osh. The most seriously injured is a 19 year old girl.

    Kyrgyzstan Airlines is on the EU banned list.

    Piper Crash in Tulsa kills 5

    What: Six-passenger Piper en route from Jones Riverside Airport to Dallas
    Where: Chandler Park in West Tulsa
    When: 10:40 a.m., Saturday Sept 5 minutes after takeoff
    Who: Two men, a woman and two girls Tulsa doctor Stephen Lester, his wife Dana, two teenage daughters, Laura, 16 and Christina, 13. and Dr. Kenneth Veteto
    Why: Just after takeoff in rainy, foggy conditions, the plane hit a cable attached to a telecommunications tower, crashed, broke up and caught on fire. When the plane hit, the wings came off. The plane flipped several times. The family and a friend had been going to the University of Oklahoma football game. Dr Veteto leaves a wife and two children.

    Two more of the family’s children were not on the plane.

    Fighter Jet Crashes in Texas


    What: CNR AIRCRAFT INC Aero Vodochody L-29 Delphin
    Where: Trinity River, SW of Scurry, TX
    When: Dec 13, 2012 10:30 a.m.
    Who: 2 fatalities
    Why: When the Aero Vodochody L-29 Delphin fighter jet impacted terrain, the two aboard, Fisher Floyd and Noell Rather were killed. The impact occurred near the juncture of the Trinity River and Highway 35, leaving a debris field for hundreds of feet.

    Floyd won the flight in an auction. He leaves behind a wife and two kids.
