Two pilots and a co pilot were killed. Weather is assumed to be the cause, but the IAF has ordered an inquiry .
What: Delta Airlines Airbus A320-200 en route from Detroit to Tampa Where: Detroit Metropolitan Airport When: September 10, 2010 Who: 138 passengers and 5 crew, one disruptive passenger Why: Half an hour into the flight, a passenger’s disruptive behavior caused the pilot to turn the plane around and return to Detroit. The passenger was removed from the plane but she was not arrested.
However curious we are, we don’t know exactly what she was doing.
What: Cathay Pacific Boeing 747-400 en route from London to Hong Kong Where: London When: Sep 11 2010 Why: After takeoff, the cabin did not pressurize. The pilot returned to London and made a safe landing and repairs.
What: PIA Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 747-300 en route from Karachi to Lahore Where: Karachi When: Sep 10th 2010 Who: 480 passengers Why: While en route, the plane’s engine ingested a bird.
The pilot returned the plane to Karachi where it made a safe landing. Passengers were provided an alternative flight at 8 pm
What: Ryanair Boeing 737-800 en route from Malta to Venice Where: Elba When: Sep 8 2010 Who: 170 people aboard, five injuries Why: While en route, the plane encountered serious turbulence, which knocked all unbuckled individuals and a trolley into the roof of the plane; the turbulence injured two flight attendants and several passengers. The pilot diverted the flight to Bologna, where they landed safely; one flight attendant was hospitalized. The other injuries were treated at the airport.
What: Wideroe de Havilland Dash 8-100 en route from Vardoe to Vadso Where: Kirkenes Norway When: Sep 7th 2010 Who: 28 passengers and 3 crew Why: While en route, the plane indicated low oil pressure in an engine and the engine was shut down. The flight diverted to Kirkenes where it made a safe landing. The problem was repaired within 3 hours and the flight resumed.
What: Spicejet Boeing 737-800 en route from Kolkata to Delhi Where: Kolkata When: Sep 8th 2010 Who: 136 passengers Why: On taxi (or during takeoff) which was already an hour late, the Spicejet’s left engine was smoking.
The pilot noticed the smoke, aborted the flight and returned the plane to the gate where maintenance worked on repairing the problem.
After another delayed departure, the Spicejet was again en route. When the cabin did not pressurize a quarter of an hour later into the flight, the pilot turned back and made an emergency landing in Kolkata.
At 10:20pm, passengers were flown out in a replacement plane.
What: Emirates Airlines Airbus A380-800 en route from Dubai to Manchester Where: Manchester When: Sep 6th 2010 Why: After a hard touchdown into gusting winds, the crew elected to perform a go-around. Although the pilot’s 2nd attempt at a landing was more successful, the plane’s later flight was delayed due to maintenance.
What: FedEx Airbus A306 en route from Memphis to Denver Where: Will Rogers World Airport. When: Sept 7 2010, 5 p.m. Who: crew Why: While en route, the plane indicated smoke in the cargo hold. The pilot diverted to Oklahoma City, where they made a safe landing. No fire was found.
What: Brazilian F-5M fighter Where: military base in southern Brazil When: September 6, 2010 8:45 a.m. Why: During routine operations, a metal panel from the F-5M fell from the fighter on to a street in downtown Cachoeirinha. It struck the pavement at a high rate of speed, bounced and sent shards of metal flying. No one was injured.
What: West Wind Where: Palmerola US military base When: September 06 2010 Who: Honduran President Porfirio Lobo Why: The plane called “West Wind” made an unplanned landing at the US military base in Palmerola (Soto Cano air base in Comayagua) when it developed technical problems at 8000 feet. An indicator light that flashed on board the West Wind jet that instigated the decision to land.
Lobo was flying to New Orleans to sign scholarship agreements to support the 50 best students from low-income families who graduate from high school will be sent on scholarship to good U.S. universities.
The plane is being checked out and the President may continue on a different plane.
What: Alrosa Mirny Air Tupolev TU-154M en route from Yakutia/Polyarny to Moscow Where: Komi republic, at the Izhma airport When: Sep 7th 2010 Who: 72 passengers, three children, nine crew members Why: Four hours into the flight, the plane suffered an on board power system failure. The plane suffered a complete failure of electrical power resulting in loss of navigation devices, fuel pumps and leaving the pilots with no knowledge of available fuel.
The pilot had to make an emergency immediate landing in the Komi republic, at the Izhma airport. The Izhma airport is normally used for helicopters in military operations, but it is a former 1200 meter airport runway. The plane overran the runway into a wooded area and was substantially damaged.
No passengers were hurt. They disembarked via slide in the forested area. The slide has seen better days. It is either third-hand, or has been used frequently.
The Komi Republic is arranging for transportation of passengers from Izhma to Ukhta (which is the nearest airport) by helicopter. On arrival in Ukhta, passengers will board a replacement flight and continue to Moscow
It appears that the carrier will leave the damaged plane where it sits, as it can not take off.

What an extraordinary feat to that plane safely. Imagine having no knowledge of how much fuel was left, or even if it would be accessible, with nowhere to land but on a helicopter landing strip, without power, with no way to brake. A harrowing ride, and some brilliant snap decisions on the part of the crew.
What: Turkish Airlines Airbus A320 en route from Ataturk to Antalya Where: Ataturk International Airport When: Sept 5 2010 15:25 p.m. local time Why: After a bird strike, the plane returned to the airport. Damage to the plane is unknown; but passengers were rerouted on an alternative flight.
What: Air New Zealand en route from Invercargill and Christchurch Where: Dunedin International Airport When: September 06 2010 Who: 43 passengers Why: While en route, the cockpit began to smell of fuel. The plane diverted to Dunedin where it made a safe landing.
Passengers were booked on alternative flights while maintenance studied the plane. Operations Manager Richard Roberts verified one crew member was hospitalized.
What: Air Canada’s Boeing-767 en route from Vancouver to Shanghai Where: Yelizovo airport When: Sept 5 2010 5:32 Moscow time Who: 152 passengers and 10 crew Why: While en route, flight attendants smelled a burning odor coming from the lavatory. The crew decided to divert and make an emergency landing at the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky airport. The plane was investigated by maintenance and no fire was found, and after a four hour delay, the flight resumed.
What: Qantas Boeing 767-300 en route from Sydney to Manila Where: Sydney When: Sep 6th 2010 Who: 158 passengers Why: After receiving an “anti-skid fault emergency message” the flight returned to Sydney. Passengers had to wait for a replacement flight.
What: TAM Linhas Aereas Airbus A320-200 en route from Sao Paulo to Joao Pessoa Where: Belo Horizonte Brazil When: Sep 6th 2010 Who: 144 on board Why: While en route, a sick passenger tried to use an emergency door. The plane diverted to Belo Horizonte where the passenger was hospitalized with a nervous breakdown. The flight continued later.
What: Iran Air Airbus A300B2-200 en route from Ahvaz to Tehran Where: Tehran When: Sep 4 2010 Why: On approach to Tehran, the plane flew through a flock of birds which struck the plane. Damage occurred on the left engine, left wing and the nose cone.
What: Trans States Airlines Embraer ERJ-145 en route from Saint Louis,MO to Pittburgh,PA Where: Indianapolis When: Sep 4 2010 Who: 54 on board Why: While en route, the crew received an indication of a cargo fire. The flight diverted to Indianapolis where they made a safe landing.
What: AirExplore Boeing 737-400 en route from Verona to Kos Where: Kos, Greece When: September 4, 2010 Who: 7 crew, 169 passengers Why: After the left engine caught on fire, the plane made an emergency landing on Kos. Passengers disembarked via emergency slides. No injuries were reported.
What: Buddha Air Aerospatiale ATR-42-300 en route from Bhairahawa to Kathmandu Where: Gautam Buddha Airport in Bhairahawa When: Sept 4 2010 Who: Captain Bhawana Pant, copilot S Rawal, two flight attendants and 4 passengers Why: The crew asked permission for an emergency landing after receiving an on board false indication. (The autopilot auto-initiated, and presented spontaneous error code.)
Nine minutes after taking off, the Buddah Air flight returned to Bhairahawa after the flight developed technical problems. The cause of the problem is under investigation.
What: (Registration pending) BE65 65 Queen Air (U-8F Seminole) Where: SAN CARLOS, CA When: Sept 2, 2010 1850 Who: 1 pilot, 2 passengers: 3 fatalities Why: The plane crashed under unknown circumstances submerged in water about a mile from the airport.
What: crop-dusting helicopter Where: SF Bay Area near the Municipal Airport in Salinas, Highway 101 south of Airport Boulevard When: September 3, 2010 Who: pilot Why: The pilot took off from Salinas Airport but became disoriented due to the fog, and lost control of the helicopter. No fatalities were reported.
What: Skydive New Zealand Fletcher FU-24-954 fixed-wing plane at Fox Glacier Airport Where: New Zealand’s South Island When: Sept 4 2010 1.15 p.m. Who: 8 passengers and pilot Why: Light aircraft which was taking off for tandem skydiving crashed just after takeoff near the airstrip. The plane burst into flames on impact. The pilot and four men from Fox Glacier and four tourists from Ireland, England, Germany and Australia were aboard. The wreckage was covered by a large tarp, awaiting investigators.
