    Fatal Crash during Secunda Airshow

    A Red Bull Extra 300 aircraft crashed on October 12 during a Secunda airshow in Mpumalanga.

    The engine appeared to stall when the pilot came out of a dive. The plane leveled out, made it to the ground and skidded seventy meters. When the plane caught fire, the pilot, Glen Dell, had to be helped from the cockpit. Reports indicated that he was airlifted and hospitalized at Mediclinic with burns and other injuries then transferred to Glenwood hospital/Netcare Sunninghill Hospital for burn care, but succumbed to the injuries.

    The plane was a Extra 330LC, which is a Lycoming AEIO-580 powered two-seat competition aircraft, a type of Aerobatic monoplane, designed in 1987 by Walter Extra, an award-winning German aerobatic pilot and built by Extra Flugzeugbau.

    Dell had 25,000 hours flying experience on 250 aircraft, held a zero foot aerobatic display waiver, which is awarded to pilots with proven competency and reputation reflecting display pilot expertise. In 2004, Glen finished first overall at the 6th Advanced World Aerobatic Championships, becoming the first South African to win. He had competed several times in the Red Bull Air Race but had announced he was returning to South African Airlines.

    The Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the cause of the crash.

    Midway Plane Crash: Elderly Couple Files Lawsuit Against Airline

    Aero commanderChicago-based law firm, Corboy & Demetrio, has filed a negligence lawsuit on behalf of Raymond Rolinskas, 84 and his wife Roberta Rolinskas, 82, whose house was destroyed by a small plane crash on November 18.

    The small Aero Commander 500 aircraft, registered to Fairway-based Central Airlines, crashed into the elderly couple’s house immediately after departing from Midway International Airport, Chicago. The pilot of the plane, 47-year-old Eric Howlett, lost his life in the crash, while Raymond and his wife remained uninjured.

    According to Matthew Jenkins of Corboy & Demetrio, “While thankfully Roberta and Raymond did not suffer any physical harm, the emotional trauma has been devastating to them…Hearing, seeing and feeling an airplane crashing just inches away from them has caused severe emotional distress.”

    The lawsuit, filed in Cook County Circuit Court on November 25, lists Central Airlines, Inc. as the defendant.

    Indian Civil Aviation Official Meets with Mangalore Crash victims

    Vayalar Ravi, Indian Civil Aviation Minister met or called (on the 18th) victims of the Mangalore crash to discuss their compensation claims. A meeting on the 19th included representatives from the airline, the government and the insurance company.,

    The crash occurred in May of 2010, when the Dubai-Mangalore Air India Express jet overshot the runway, killing 158 people aboard.

    However other business was also being handled during the meetings.

    The outcome of the meetings has not yet been released.

    Aéropro – Crash kills 7 in Canada

    What: Aéropro Beechcraft A100 King Air en route from Jean-Lesage International Airport to Sept-Îles Airpor
    Where: 1.6 km N. of Jean-Lesage Int. Airport near Quebec
    When: June 23, 2010
    Who: 5 passengers, 2 crew, 7 fatalities
    Why: After takeoff, the pilot complained of a problem in his right engine. The pilot attempted to return to the airport, but the plane crashed into a residential neighborhood and exploded.

    Sikorsky Helicopter Crashes in Louisiana, 3 fatalities


    On March 15, 2013, an Era Helicopters LLC Sikorsky S-76A with three board crashed just before noon in Cameron Parish Louisiana in a remote area of swampy/muddy pastureland with only four-wheeler access.

    The helicopter had taken off from Lake Charles Regional Airport. Emergency services responded to the scene, but access was limited to 4 wheel vehicles.

    The helicopter was on a maintenance test flight with the pilot and two mechanics aboard. The fatalities were listed as the pilot, William R. Croucher, 69, of California; and two mechanics: Michael Lee Tyree, 55, of Iowa, La., and Timothy Lloyd Goehring, 41, of Sulphur, La.

    Era helicopters normally provides transport to oil and gas fields in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska, but this flight was reported as a maintenance flight.

    THe FAA and the NTSB are investigating.

    Era Helicopter’s statement:
    “We deeply regret this unfortunate accident and we will use all of our resources to support the families of those involved. Our review will continue in concert with the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, which has jurisdiction over this matter”

    Air India Plane Over-runs Runway in India

    Air India flight AI-849 made a safe emergency landing at Pune Airport, Maharashtra, India, on May 12th.

    The Airbus A321-200 flying from Delhi, India, had landed safely but it over-ran the end of runway.

    The passengers were evacuated via slides.

    All 152 people aboard remained safe.
