    Etihad Airways Flight Returns to Abu Dhabi due to Engine Issue

    Etihad Airways flight EY-474 had to return and make an emergency landing in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on May 2nd.

    The Airbus A330-200 plane took off for Jakarta, Indonesia, but had to turn back after the crew reported a loud bang and streaks of flames coming out of left engine.

    The plane landed back uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained safe.

    American Airlines Encounters Turbulence over Chicago

    What: American Airlines Boeing 767-200 en route from San Francisco to New York
    Where: Chicago
    When: Apr 29 2010
    Who: 3 flight attendants
    Why: While en route to NY, the flight encountered turbulence. Several flight attendants received bumps and bruises from the encounter. The flight diverted to Chicago, landing there half an hour after the incident, and remained In Chicago for an hour and a half prior to taking off again for New York.

    KLM Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Los Angeles

    KLM flight KL-602 had to return and make an emergency landing in Los Angeles, California, on November 18th.

    The Boeing 747-400 plane took off for Amsterdam, Netherlands, but had to turn back due to an engine problem.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Arrow Cargo Crumbles in Flight over Brazil

    What: Arrow Cargo McDonnell Douglas DC-10 freighter, en route from Manaus, AM Brazil to Bogota Colombia
    Where: Manaus (rua Humaita, Terra Nova)
    When: Mar 26th 2009
    Who: 4 crew flew the plane that damaged 12 houses
    Why: The crew heard an explosion but kept going, unaware the engine had disgorged parts of the engine nacelle, its combustion chamber, turbine and outlet. The company has already said they’ll reimburse locals for the damage.

    No doubt.

    They continued on to Bogata…or they would have if weather hadn’t diverted them to Medellin.

    Airbus with Retread Throws Tread in Toronto

    What: Air Transat Airbus A330-300 en route from Toronto to Dublin
    Where: Toronto
    When: Jul 15th 2011
    Who: 314 passengers
    Why: During takeoff, a tire was damaged. The tire caused damage to several parts of the plane, which initially had been attributed to a bird strike. Tire debris (tread) was found on the runway.

    The flight continued to Dublin, where the plane made a safe landing on a tire which had lost tread. On inspection, it was found that a wing panel and a landing gear door needed repair, having been damaged on takeoff by tread.

    A replacement flight was sent to Dublin to make the return flight.

    Canadian Helicopter Wrecks at Sleeping Beauty

    What: Bailey Helicopters Ltd.Eurocopter AS 350B2 AStar flying out of CYXJ/Fort St John General Airport
    Where: Sleeping Beauty Mountain. Terrace BC, Canada
    When: June 1, 2012
    Who: 3 aboard, 3 fatalities
    Why: At nine oclock, ATC lost contact with a training flight flown by 45-year-old Peter Bryant. Two other Bailey Helicopter employees were also aboard.

    A search and rescue team including a Canadian Armed Forces Buffalo fixed-wing aircraft and a Cormorant helicopter out of Comox were all deployed to the electronic flight tracking system location and confirmed that the Eurocopter crashed in poor weather (described as “horrible”) into Sleeping Beauty Mountain. The area was undergoing rain and snow, and considered unsafe by an avalanche technician. One rescue searcher hiked to the crash site.

    The remains have now been recovered, though it was a hazardous recovery, during which an avalanche occurred.
