    Who: 51 people on board
    Why: 300 feet from the runway, a sensor indicated smoke in the cargo compartment, flight 3890 landed safely in Dallas.

    Incidentally, American Airlines flight 2461 issued an alert Thursday after smoke was detected.

    London-bound Boeing Suffers Lightning Strike

    What: United Boeing 777-200 en route from San Francisco to London
    Where: San Francisco
    When: Apr 12th 2012
    Who: 195 passengers aboard
    Why: After taking off from San Francisco, the left side of the United Boeing 777 was struck by lightning. Passengers described the flash of light and the big bank. Oxygen masks deployed. No one was injured. Weather suspended other flights taking off from that airport until the storm blew through.

    Pilots informed ATC, and dumped fuel before returning to land safely. The plane remained on the runway as officials inspected the aircraft. Passengers were put up in local hotels and scheduled to take an alternate flight Friday afternoon.

    TUI Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Manchester

    TUI Airways flight BY-2677 made an emergency landing in Manchester, England, on January 20th.

    The Boeing 757-200 plane flying from La Palma, Spain, was on final approach to Manchester when the crew went around reporting an issue with the flaps.

    The plane subsequently landed safely. All two hundred and twenty-six people aboard remained unharmed.

    Swiss International Air Lines Flight Makes Emergency Landing at Heathrow Airport

    Swiss International Air Lines flight LX-353 had to return and make an emergency landing at Heathrow Airport, England, on April 21st.

    The plane took off for Geneva, Switzerland, but had to return shortly afterwards due to an issue with the flaps.

    The plane landed safely.

    All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

  • Small plane lands on I-89

    What: Small plane en route from Franklin County State Airport in Highgate
    Where: emergency landing on Interstate 89 near the town of Swanton Vermont
    When: Friday afternoon 12:50 p.m. in the southbound land at about mile marker 125.
    Who: Pilot Daniel Marcotte, 34, of Bakersfield was the only one aboard. He was not injured.
    Why: The plane developed engine trouble.

    What: Arkefly Boeing 737-800 en route from Kittilä to Amsterdam
    Where: Rovaniemi Finland
    When: Jan 3rd 2010
    Who: 181 passengers, 7 crew
    Why: After takeoff, the crew assumed there was a tail strike (no indication if this was witnessed or indicated by a resultant problem). The crew diverted to Rovaniemi where a maintenance crew was flown in to assess the plane.
