Immigration and Customs Enforcement Emergency Landing at Mesa

What: ICE MD-80 en route from Las Vegas to Mesa
Where: Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport
When: July 17, 2012, 11:15 a.m.
Who: 75 passengers
Why: The flight was en route from Las Vegas to Mesa when it developed engine problems. One engine was shut down and the pilots made a safe landing at their intended destination with one engine down. Many of the passengers were detainees in the process of deportation.

ICE stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Another source said the plane was operated by Allegiant.

Emergency responders were on the scene, including the Mesa Fire Department.

    Blackburn Canyon Cessna Crash, Tehachapi Wildfire


    What: Cessna 210
    Where: Blackburn Canyon, Tehachapi, California
    When: Sept 4, 2011
    Who: 2 aboard, 2 fatalities
    Why: A Cessna that crashed in Blackburn Canyon, Tehachapi, California killed both people aboard the flight and ignited a fire that caused the evacuation of hundreds of homes south of Bakersfield. Two were confirmed dead in the crash, and it has not (yet) been confirmed if there were more than 2 aboard.

    As of Monday, the number of evacuations had grown from 100 to 650 to about 1,500 homes homes. The threatened area was the mountains around the crash and a seven square mile burn area, all threatened by a raging forest fire. Firefighters concentrated on creating a fire-break.

    A DC-10 water tanker has been part of the firefighting team, including 600 firefighters and more than a dozen aircraft.

    Tehachapi, with a population of 8,000, has some renown as an area with wind farms. Smaller fires spread to San Bernardino National Forest and rural areas of San Bernardino County.

    The fire has been 95% contained.

    What: TRIP Linhas Aereas Aerospatiale ATR-72-500 en route from Curitiba to Cascavel Brazil
    Where: Cascavel
    When: Jan 10th 2010
    Who: 70 on board
    Why: Near Cascavel the left engine caught fire. The engine was shut down and the fire suppression system activated and put it out. However, Cascavel was closed due to low visibility, and the flight diverted to Iguassu Falls. Cascavel travelers were bussed from Iguassu Falls.

    Dourados and Campo Grande passengers were provided connecting flights.

    JetBlue Flight Returns to Buffalo After Bird Strike

    JetBlue flight B6-2216 made an emergency landing in Buffalo, New York, on May 24th.

    The plane took off for Boston, Massachusetts, but had to turn back due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All sixty people aboard remained safe.

    Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Ocean Springs

    A small plane made an emergency landing at Ocean Springs Airport in Mississippi, on October 8th.

    Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing due to engine issues.

    The pilot sustained minor injuries in the incident.

    Delta Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Wichita

    Delta Airlines flight DL-2567 had to return and make an emergency landing at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, Kansas, on October 11th.

    The plane took off for Atlanta, Georgia, but had to turn back due to pressurization issues.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
