UTAir Left Engine and Reserve Pilot Shut Down.

What: UTair Boeing 757 en route from Bangkok to Novosibirsk
Where: en route
Who: 1 fatality
Why: While en route, one of the crew became ill, and the pilot intended to land in Chengdu. However, three things occurred: reserve pilot Sergei Golev, 44, had a heart attack. A cardiologist who was a passenger tried to revive him. Golev died before landing in Chendu. The pilot continued on to Novosibirsk.

Golev was the reserve pilot aboard in case the pilot or first officer became ill.

On the Jan 20th, a UTAir AN26 diverted to Novosibirsk (Noyabrsk) with engine trouble.

Of course I wasn’t there on the flight where Sergei Golev died so I don’t have first hand detail; but it does seem to me the protocol would (or should) be to divert ASAP so that the sick individual could get care. Who knows if heroic efforts might have saved his life? Did the cardiologist or UTAir happen to have a defib machine? I guess we’ll never know.

    Where: Tokyo
    When: Jul 15th 2010
    Who: 192 passengers and 10 crew
    Why: While en route, the plane encountered turbulence over the Atlantic.
    A flight attendant was injured between Guam and Tokyo, about 100 minutes before landing in Tokyo. The plane made a safe landing in Tokyo

    2 Injured After United Airlines Plane Encounters Turbulence in Denver

    United Airlines flight UA-466 encountered turbulence in Denver, Colorado, on December 10th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane flying from Salt Lake City, Utah, was descending toward Denver when it encountered turbulence that injured two crew members.

    The plane landed safely.

    AI Tires Blown

    On Feb 2, Air India Flight AI-191, a Boeing 777-337ER, en route from Ahmedabad to Mumbai blew three tires on landing. The crew was able to taxi to the gate with assistance. No injuries to the 260 passengers resulted from the blown tires, and there were no reports of injuries using the emergency exits.

    The AI flight’s eventual destination was the US. Passengers continuing their journey were provided an alternative Boeing 777.

    THere’s no indication if the tires blew do to the runway surface, tire quality, a hard landing or other reason. The incident is under investigation.

    Delta Airlines Plane Returns to Netherlands due to Hydraulic Failure

    250px-Delta_logo.svgDelta Airlines flight DL-47 had to return and make an emergency landing at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Amsterdam, Netherlands, on March 30.

    The Boeing 767-300, en-route to New York, was climbing out of Amsterdam when the crew reported hydraulic failure, prompting the plane to return.

    The plane landed safely.

    All passengers onboard remained unharmed.

    Boeing Begins Assembly of 1,000th 767

    Commercial Airplanes, begins production of the 1,000th 767 with spar load in the Everett, Wash., factory.”]

    EVERETT, Wash., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Boeing (NYSE: BA) has begun assembly of the 1,000th 767 airplane at the factory in Everett, Wash. Mechanics took the first step in major assembly by loading the wing spar into the assembly tool. The spar is the internal support structure that runs through the full length of the wing.

    “This is an important milestone for the 767, which has continued to evolve and improve since entering service nearly 30 years ago,” said Kim Pastega, vice president and general manager of the 767 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 767 is a high-performing twin-aisle airplane that delivers nearly 99 percent dispatch reliability every day for more than 90 operators around the world.”

    The 1,000th airplane, a 767-300ER (extended range) passenger model, is scheduled for delivery in February 2011 to long-time customer ANA (All Nippon Airways). ANA ordered its first 767 in 1979 and has taken delivery of 89 767s to date.

    Boeing will use the 767 as the platform for its NewGen Tanker if it wins the U.S. Air Force KC-X Tanker competition. Contract award currently is scheduled for mid-November.

    The Boeing 767 family is a family of clean, quiet, fuel-efficient airplanes that provide maximum market versatility in the 200- to 300-seat market. The Boeing 767 family includes three passenger models — the 767-200ER, 767-300ER and 767-400ER — and a medium-widebody freighter, which is based on the 767-300ER fuselage.
