The small plane of a Pakistani-origin Indiana teenager went down shortly after leaving Pago Pago in American Samoa for Honolulu, over the Pacific Ocean on July 22.
Haris Suleman, 17 and his father Babar Suleman, were aboard the plane when it crashed. The Sulemans left Indiana on June 19 in a bid to make a world trip in 30 days to set the record for the fastest circumnavigation around the world in a single-engine airplane with the youngest pilot in command. The trip was also to raise money for the Citizens Foundation, a nonprofit that builds schools in Pakistan. They were scheduled to stops in England, Egypt and Pakistan and return home on July 30.
Annie Hayat, a family spokesperson, said the body of Haris Suleman had been recovered, but crews were still looking for his father. Haris’ sister Hiba Suleman said that the plane took off at about 9:50 p.m. and the air traffic controller saw the plane going down at 10:15. “With a trip like this, there’s always a risk, and they did prepare for that risk,” she said.
Babar Suleman was an experienced pilot while Haris recently received his license in June this year.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor in Los Angeles said the single-engine Hawker Beechcraft plane crashed into the ocean under unknown circumstances. The tail number provided by the FAA shows the plane is registered to the address of Babar Suleman in Plainfield, Indiana, west of Indianapolis.
The NTSB is investigating the cause of crash.
A Bell 206 helicopter belonging to Guatemala’s Air Force crashed in a wooded mountainous area of the western province of Huehuetenango in Guatemala, on August 20.
The Interior Secretary Mauricio Lopez confirmed that Gen. Rudy Ortiz, the head of the Guatemalan military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, as well as 4 other military officers died in the crash. Gen. Braulio Mayen, commander of the army’s 5th Brigade, was one of the other victims identified by Lopez.
The accident happened when the high level military officials were flying to the village of Ixquisis to inspect the troops. “They couldn’t land in Ixquisis and instead decided to go to the military base in Las Palmas and in that trajectory the helicopter crashed,” Lopez added.
Ortiz, 51, was due to retire next year after serving the army for 32 years. President Otto Perez Moline, a retired general, expressed his grief over Ortiz’s death and said, “His hard work and dedication during his military career served to strengthen the institution.”
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
So far there have been no groundbreaking discoveries regarding the cause of the Aug. 20 Spanair crash beyond what was known originally: a problem with the plane’s wing flaps and the failure of a cockpit alarm, evidence of which is backed up by the plane’s black boxes. The plane’s history indicates that this was not the first time the wing slats were an issue. Two days before the accident, they were repaired.
Before the crash, on the plane’s first pass, a warning sounded from a “heat sensor in the engine inlet” which prompted the pilots to return to the gate and get it inspected. The system was “isolated, ” i.e. unplugged.

A passenger plane crashed in Khabarovsk region of Russia, on November 15th.
The incident happened when the plane, operated by Khabarovsk Avia, was carrying five passengers and two pilots.
Only one passenger, a three-year-old girl, survived the crash. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The cause of crash is being investigated.
The plane was performing a regular flight from Khabarovsk to Nelkan.

Why: After taking off from Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the pilot reported trouble to ATC, and was trying to return to the airport. The pilots, Timoteo Aldo and Jessie Kim Lustica, had been fetching a cargo of fish. A witness described the plane “twirling” in the air before impact.
The Beechcraft crashed into Felixberto Serrano Elementary school and exploded, killing the 3 aboard and 11 on the ground in Better Living Subdivision, Parañaque City. The specific location was Taiwan St., Barangay Don Bosco. School was not in session, but there had just been a Christmas party there. The F. Serrano Elementary School burned down; school for 2000 will be suspended on Monday as plans are made to send students to alternative schools.
Victims included children playing at the playground.
Twenty injured were taken to Parañaque Doctors Hospital and Parañaque Community Hospital along the South Luzon Expressway. The Philippine Red Cross was on the scene, reporting a number of burn victims.
50 domiciles on the subdivision’s easement were damaged. Residents were not called “squatters” but were described as informal settlers. Seventy families were evacuated–a total of 600 people evacuated.
A covered court inside the subdivision is being provided as temporary shelter for evacuees.
Maricel Rodriguez Garado, Ronald Sabidario were two adults reported as lost in the crash in addition to the two pilots.
