    New Breed Logistics to Provide Expanded Logistics Support for Boeing 787 Dreamliner in Charleston, SC

    HIGH POINT, N.C. Jan. 27, 2011 — New Breed Logistics, Inc., headquartered in High Point, North Carolina, has announced that they have been selected by The Boeing Company to provide logistics support in Charleston, South Carolina for the manufacture and final assembly of the 787 Dreamliner.  This agreement represents continued growth of the relationship between New Breed and The Boeing Company and is the largest single contract between the two companies.

    New Breed provides support for many other Boeing airplane programs, and was selected in 2006 to provide logistical support for 787 final assembly and delivery at Boeing’s manufacturing campus in Everett, Washington.  New Breed also recently established itself as a South Carolina Limited Liability Company.

    Under the contract announced today, New Breed will receive, store, provide inventory control, kit, package, distribute, and transport 787 parts, tools, and supplies to designated locations within Boeing’s North Charleston assembly facility.  Louis DeJoy, New Breed’s Chairman & CEO commented, “We are focused every day on providing superior solutions and excellent execution for Boeing. This type of growth and expansion with Boeing is the proof that our efforts have truly made a difference for them and provides further incentive for us to keep raising the bar.”  

    New Breed’s Boeing South Carolina support operations will be housed in a New Breed facility located in the Charleston area.  Staffing plans for the facility will be finalized over the next few months.  

    New Breed currently supports several of Boeing’s commercial and defense aviation programs.  In addition to the 787 Dreamliner, New Breed operates the Boeing Commercial Airplanes spare parts program for eastern North America, and South and Central Americas; the F/A-18 Integrated Readiness Support Teaming, or FIRST, program; and, spares programs for the H-46 rotorcraft, the Harrier Integrated Supply Support (HISS) program, Japanese and Italian KC-767 tankers, Korean F-15s, the C-17 and the F-22.  Additionally, the company provides parts kitting and line-side delivery services for new-build military rotorcraft programs at Boeing’s Ridley Park, PA manufacturing site that include the Chinook and V-22 Osprey.

    New Breed has received the prestigious Boeing Performance Excellence Award (BPEA) in each of the last four consecutive years.  The Boeing Company issues the BPEA annually to recognize suppliers who have achieved superior performance.

    Statement of American Airlines in Response to Sabre’s Actions

    FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 5, 2011 / — American Airlines today received notice from Sabre that it has taken a set of punitive actions against the airline and its customers, despite the fact that American has met all its obligations and continues to work in good faith with Sabre.

    The actions, which include biasing its shopping displays, are anti-consumer, anti-competitive and harmful to its subscribing agents.

    Sabre’s actions are discriminatory and patently inconsistent with both its contractual obligations and its professed goal of ensuring full transparency for the benefit of consumers and travel agents. In contrast, the actions only serve to protect Sabre’s market position and attempt to force airlines and travel agencies to rely exclusively on its legacy systems that only lead to higher fares and fewer choices for consumers.

    Australia: flight safety checks

    Victorian aerodrome flight safety checks

    Special flight safety checks are being carried out at 18 Victorian aerodromes next week.

    There will be a series of low-level flights at each aerodrome to make sure flight paths continue to operate safely.

    A twin-engine Cessna Conquest aircraft will be used to conduct the safety checks within an area up to 35 kilometres from each aerodrome.

    The two pilots flying the aircraft will ensure navigation aids are operational and not suffering interference, as well as looking for any new obstacles that could be a danger to aviation safety.

    The Civil Aviation Safety Authority requires these checks to be carried out every three years to maintain a high level of air safety at aerodromes.

    Low-level flying is an essential part of the safety exercise, with the aircraft down as low as several hundred feet at times.

    Local residents may notice an uncommon flying pattern, but this is to make sure obstacles are accurately marked on charts and no new obstacles exist. Obstacles can be towers, trees, masts or buildings that can be a danger to aircraft.

    The checks are scheduled to be carried out between Saturday 11 December and Sunday 19 December 2010.

    If poor weather or other factors do not allow the safety checks to go ahead on the planned days they will be carried out as soon as possible.

    CASA has contracted the operation of the special check flights out to Radiola Aerospace Pty Ltd – a company with wide international expertise in these specialist operations.

    Naracoorte aerodrome flight safety checks

    easyJet Unveils Ash Detector to End Large-Scale Disruption

    easyJet, the UK’s largest airline, today unveils a ground breaking technology that will minimise future disruption from volcanic activity.

    easyJet will be the world’s first airline to trial a new technology called AVOID (Airborne Volcanic Object Identifier and Detector). The system, essentially a weather radar for ash, was created by Dr Fred Prata of the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU). AVOID is a system that involves placing infrared technology onto an aircraft to supply images to both the pilots and an airline’s flight control centre.

    These images will enable pilots to see an ash cloud up to 100 km ahead of the aircraft and at altitudes between 5,000ft and 50,000ft. This will allow pilots to make adjustments to the plane’s flight path to avoid any ash cloud. The concept is very similar to weather radars which are standard on commercial airliners today.

    On the ground, information from aircraft with AVOID technology would be used to build an accurate image of the volcanic ash cloud using real time data. This would open up large areas of airspace that would otherwise be closed during a volcanic eruption, which would benefit passengers by minimising disruption.

    easyJet Chief Executive Andy Harrison, said: “This pioneering technology is the silver bullet that will make large-scale ash disruption history. The ash detector will enable our aircraft to see and avoid the ash cloud, just like airborne weather radars and weather maps make thunderstorms visible.”

    Dr Fred Prata, Senior Scientist at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) and inventor of the AVOID system added: “AVOID enhances the theory around volcanic ash clouds with live data. easyJet is committed to bring our technology to life.”

    Commenting on today’s news Andrew Haines, Chief Executive of the Civil Aviation Authority said “It is essential that the aviation community works together to develop solutions to minimise disruption, should ash return. The CAA welcomes the fact that airlines are considering innovations such as this and we will do all we can to facilitate them.”

    The first test flight is to be carried out by Airbus on behalf of easyJet within two months, using an Airbus 340 test aircraft. Subject to the results of these tests, easyJet intends to trial the technology on its own aircraft with a view to installing it on enough aircraft to minimise future disruption from ash.

    Boeing Names Kim Hammonds Chief Information Officer

    CHICAGO, Jan. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Boeing (NYSE: BA) has named Kim Hammonds chief information officer and vice president of the company’s Information Technology organization. Hammonds, who was formerly vice president of the Boeing Information Technology Infrastructure organization, replaces John Hinshaw, who has been named vice president and general manager of Boeing’s new Information Solutions division in Boeing Defense, Space & Security.

    Hammonds, 43, will report to John Tracy, Boeing chief technology officer and senior vice president of Engineering, Operations & Technology. She will lead the Information Technology organization and be responsible for all IT strategy, systems, infrastructure, architecture, processes and people companywide. “Kim’s extensive background and demonstrated leadership will ensure both the continuity and success of Boeing’s efforts to integrate and streamline its global operations with the most capable, reliable and secure IT system in the world,” said Tracy.

    In her previous role, Hammonds was responsible for developing and maintaining solutions inclusive of network, computing, server, storage, collaboration and infrastructure technologies. She joined Boeing in August 2008 as the vice president of Boeing IT’s Business Systems Organization, where she managed application, development and maintenance activities in support of Finance, HR, Internal Services, Sales/Marketing and Boeing Capital Corporation.

    Prior to joining Boeing, Hammonds was director of Americas Manufacturing Operations at Dell where she was responsible for global systems development for service logistics, supply chain and quality systems. She was also responsible for IT production support for all 18 global manufacturing operations.
    Before joining Dell in 2007, Hammonds was with the Ford Motor Company for 16 years, where she held positions in product engineering, manufacturing, quality, marketing and Information Technology leadership roles. Her last position at Ford was as director of Manufacturing Systems for North America, supporting 48 plants, manufacturing engineering, supply chain and production systems.

    Hammonds received an MBA from Western Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan. She is an active supporter of the American Cancer Society and is the founder and president of a non-profit organization providing art programs for cancer patients, which she established in 2004.
