    American Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Lightning Strike

    American Airlines flight AA-134 had to return and make an emergency landing in Miami, Florida, on September 1st.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Seattle, Washington, but had to turn back due to a lightning strike.

    The plane landed back safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    Ethiopian Airlines Flight Returns to Addis Ababa After Engine Failure

    Ethiopian Airlines flight ET-638 had to return and make an emergency landing in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on August 7th.

    The Boeing 787-800 plane took off for Singapore but had to turn back due to an engine failure.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    American Eagle Loses Door

    What: American Eagle Aerospatiale ATR-72-500 en route from Lawton to Dallas
    Where: Dallas
    When: Apr 10 2010
    Why: On landing in Dallas, the plane’s main gear door fell from the aircraft.

    The incident occurred a few months after the Federal Aviation Administration proposed a multimillion-dollar civil fine against Fort Worth-based American Eagle Airlines for flying planes with inadequate repairs. Eagle flew 1,178 flights with improperly repaired landing gear doors on four Bombardier aircraft, violating rules set by the FAA.

    Emirates Airbus Emergency Landing

    What: Emirates Airbus A330-200 en route from Thiruvananthapuram to Dubai
    Where: Thiruvananthapuram
    When: August 24, 2010
    Who: 278 passengers
    Why: After a hydraulic probelm developed in the landing gear of the Airbus, the pilot intended to divert to Mumbai, but instead made an emergency landing back at Thiruvananthapuram. It was a safe landing and there were no injuries.

    Hydraulic Failure, Emergency Landing in Elmira

    What: Delta Airlines/Pinnacle Airlines Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Wilkes-Barre,PA to Detroit,MI
    Where: Elmira
    When: Jan 19th 2012
    Who: 41 passengers and 3 crew
    Why: After takeoff, the flight developed hydraulic issues.

    Pilots diverted to Elmira. However, the hydraulic problem was exacerbated by a flaps problem, leading to an aborted landing and a fly by.

    Pilots made a fast but safe landing.

    Engine Fire at Sharjah International Airport

    What: Russian Boeing 747 cargo flight en route
    from Kandahar
    Where: Sharjah International Airport
    When: Sunday October 25 7.30pm
    Who: Not available
    Why: At Sharjah International Airport, a Russian cargo plane made an emergency landing when a fire developed in one of its four engines. The pilot shut down the affected engine and made a safe landing. The aircraft is currently grounded at the Sharjah airport pending repair and investigation.

    The incident occurred four days after the Azza Transport B707 at Sharjah on Oct 21st 2009 went up in a fireball and grounded the airport for several hours.
