    Why: Thirty minutes into the flight, the cabin developed pressurization problems and requested to fly at a lower altitude. Over Canada, the crew requested to fly even lower. 7 hours into the flight, the plane made an emergency landing in Anchorage.

    What: single-engine PA-24 Comanche en route from St Johns to Aguila
    Where: Horsethief Basin area, Yavapai County AZ
    When: Oct 4 2009
    Who: Ralph Smith, 74, and his wife Francis Smith, 70
    Why: The cause of the crash has not been determined yet. The crash started a fire in the area; the downed plane was a surprise to firefighters, and not immediately tied to the fire.

    Smith was a retired airline pilot.

    The pilot and his wife were not found immediately; the crash occurred in a remote area, but both bodies were recovered by Tuesday.

    Delta: Whacked Tail at JFK

    What: Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 from New York JFK,NY to Sao Paulo
    Where: New York
    When: Mar 6th 2011
    Why: The Delta Boeing encountered heavy wind on takeoff and suffered a tail strike. The pilot returned to JFK and made a safe landing. According to Flight Aware, the duration of the flight was 49 minutes.

    WOW Air Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Keflavik

    WOW Air flight WW-117 had to return and make an emergency landing in Keflavik, Iceland, on November 1st.

    The Airbus A321-200 plane took off for Baltimore, Maryland, but had to turn back after the crew needed to shut down one of the engines.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    What: Tam Fokker 100 en route from Sao Paulo to Rio
    Where: residential area 1 mile from Sao Paulo
    When: October 31 1996
    Who: 89 passengers,6 crew and 2 on the ground died.
    Why: Summary: On October 31 1996, about 0545 UTC a Fokker 100, registration PT-MRK, operating as TAM Airlines flight. 402, a shuttle between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, crashed shortly after takeoff from the Congonhas Airport, Sao Paulo, Brazil. The aircraft was destroyed; 89 passengers,6 crew and 2 on the ground died. 3 passengers were Americans .Witnesses reported the aircraft failed to gain altitude after take-off, collided with a tall building and crashed into residential area 1 mile from the end of the departure runway. Pilot error, unfamiliarity with the craft was judged to be partially responsible.

    7 Injured after KLM Flight Runs into Severe Turbulence Over Mediterranean Sea

    KLMKLM flight KL-588 experienced severe turbulence above the Mediterranean Sea, on October 14th.

    The Airbus A330-200 plane was heading from Lagos, Nigeria, to Amsterdam, Netherlands, when it ran into severe turbulence over the Mediterranean Sea.

    The plane continued for a safe landing in Amsterdam.

    The airline said 7 people, including 5 passengers and 2 crew members, sustained minor injuries due to turbulence.
