Vietnam Airlines Emergency Landing in Ho Chi Minh City

What: Vietnam Airlines Airbus A320-200 en route from Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh City
Where: Ho Chi Minh City
When: Aug 7th 2009
Who: 164 passengers including 26 children and 2 infants
Why: On its landing approach, the plane developed an unusual level of hydraulic fluid in its hydraulic braking system. Two (main gear) tires blew on landing. (It is not uncommon for tires to blow when a plane lands at too high of a speed.) The passengers debarked via emergency slides. No injuries were reported.

Newspapers reported that the pilot was Captain Jual Ruiz of Peru Ruiz, who got his license from CAAV in 2005, and has 17,500 flying hours. Nguyen Khanh Thanh of Viet Nam was his copilot.

    What: North Cariboo Flying Service de Havilland Dash 8-100 en route from Edmonton to Fort Nelson
    Where: Peace River, Canada
    When: Oct 19th 2010
    Who: 28 passengers and 3 crew
    Why: While en route, the plane developed low oil pressure in the left engine. The crew shut down the engine and diverted to Peace River where they made a safe landing.

    American Airlines Flight Diverts to O’Hare International Airport

    An American Airlines flight had to divert and make an emergency landing at O’Hare International Airport, Illinois, on December 28th.

    The plane flying from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Minneapolis, Minnesota, was diverted due to a possible mechanical problem.

    The plane landed safely. All 149 passengers and 5 crew members remained safe.

    Delta: Disruptive Damsel Disgorged at Detroit

    What: Delta Airlines Airbus A320-200 en route from Detroit to Tampa
    Where: Detroit Metropolitan Airport
    When: September 10, 2010
    Who: 138 passengers and 5 crew, one disruptive passenger
    Why: Half an hour into the flight, a passenger’s disruptive behavior caused the pilot to turn the plane around and return to Detroit. The passenger was removed from the plane but she was not arrested.

    However curious we are, we don’t know exactly what she was doing.

    A Flat…and Airports Need Maintenance Too

    What: United Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from Washington to Brussels Belgium
    Where: Dulles (Washington DC)
    When: May 8th 2010
    Who: 176 passengers and 11 crew
    Why: About five minutes after takeoff, the on board crew was informed that pieces of the plane were left on the runway. Those pieces turned out to be the remains of tires. The plane went into a holding pattern to burn off fuel, then landed safely back at Dulles between two and three hours after takeoff. A piece of runway pavement was missing, leading to the conclusion that the runway popped the tire…

    Most times I fly United and hope that their maintenance is better than the look of their wearing interiors. I don’t usually worry too much about the airport.

    If I knew that the plane I was on had left pieces of itself on the runway, I’d rather be circling the airport than over the Atlantic. On the other hand, if I knew a shaggy runway was going to pop a tire on the plane I was on, I’d have walked the runway myself before taking off.

    What is a frequent flier to do but nag the FAA?

    Lufthansa Airbus Returns to Germany due to Hydraulic Failure

    LufthansaLufthansa flight LH-712 had to return and make an emergency landing at Frankfurt Airport, Germany on July 23.

    The Airbus A380-800 was heading towards Seoul, South Korea, when the crew decided to return due to hydraulic failure.

    The plane landed uneventfully and everyone aboard remained safe.
