United Airlines flight 1296 en route from Los Angeles to Hawaii had to return and make an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport on May 10 due to the smell of smoke in the cabin and cockpit.
The Boeing 757, with 149 passengers on board was flying over the Pacific Ocean when the odor was noticed in the plane.
The plane made an uneventful emergency landing at 11:38 am. None of the passengers or crew members were injured.
Maintenance crews are examining the plane.
Some passengers said they experienced the scariest moments of their lives when they were told to keep their oxygen masks and life vests on. One of the passengers, Rebecca Elder said that the smoke was coming from both sides of the plane. She further said “We looked around the other passengers, everybody was very calm and really nice and helped each other out.”
