Swine Flu Terror In The Skies

What: United Airlines Boeing 777 en route from Munich to Washington
Where: Logan International Airport 1:46 p.m.-
    When: 3:45 p.m
Who: 245 passengers and 14 crew members
Why: When a woman aboard this flight started to feel the flu, 244 passengers and 14 crew members had to go out of their way (at a cost of how many thousands?) and land en route so she be taken by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital.

    George’s Point of View

The US was founded by stalwart pilgrims. Most of our ancestors came to these shores with pennies to their name. We’re formed of hardy peasant stock born of strong roots with nothing but our bodies and brains to make us what we are. We are the survivors of freezing winters, summers spent barefoot on farms, yellow fever, wars, drought, and more war and more drama. We are the spawn of mixed melting pots, and all the harsh trials that weed out the weak. We are sturdy stock.

We are the survivors of parents or grandparents who told us stories of trudging to and from school in shoulder-high snow walking uphill both ways.

    (And they didn’t have antibiotics.)

So what would our stalwart predecessors say about this current terror of the flu?

    I think they’d be a little embarrassed.

Maybe I’m a little concerned about our oldest, sickest and most vulnerable, but I won’t go into the swine flu brouhaha. I’m not a doctor. I would not wish to be any of those millions of swine flu victims in rural Mexico, with access only to rudimentary medical facilities. Because the oldest, the youngest, the sickest, the weakest are the most vulnerable.

    But.

Let’s face it. The air in a plane is a closed system. It has always been a closed system. That air recirculates. Maybe planes will install uv light machines in their air systems to sterilize the air. In the meantime, we’re all breathing shared air in planes.

I’m proud that even in these tough economic times, United Airlines is so solvent that it can afford to spend thousands to divert planes when a solitary patient has the sniffles. But…maybe next time, they could spend the equivalent cost of the next “sneeze-diversion” on a couple warehouses full of surgical masks. So that next time we’re in a United Airlines plane, we can rest assured that-if our neighbor sneezes-next to that airsick bag and airplane weekly magazine, we can find a “swine flu” mask, some kleenex and maybe some anti-bacterial hand cleaner.

    D’ya think?

    Aviation Dominoes

Jet Airways is suspending its Mumbai and Johannesburg route, leaving the field open for South African Airways, which is increasing flights between those cities by an additional weekly flight, beginning June 16th.

However, other sources report that South African Airways is canceling direct flights between London and Cape Town. Will British Airways and Emirates be filling in the gap?

Business Day asks if Cape Town can realise the dream of using its global location to take advantage of growing international trade. Cape Town International is South Africa’s second-largest airport and was named Africa’s leading airport in the 2012 World Airport Awards.

Nabo Rings Danger and Caution over African Skies (and Spreading)

It is June 15, three days after Eritrea’s Nabo volcano erupted, and traffic is still being disrupted. Ethiopian Airlines announced flights to Northern Ethiopia, Dijbouti and Kartoum are still disrupted by the ash cloud, although their other flights are running smoothly. Care is being taken because the ash, which is mainly made up of silicates melts at about 1100°C and fuses inside the engine, often to catastrophic results.

The Toulouse VAAC (Volcanic Ash Advisories) maps out the ash cloud:

And the official text advisory of June 15 from VAAC is below:

Pleas for Brazil to Drop Criminal Investigation

Brazil’s air traffic control problem did not begin in July when a TAM Linhas Aereas SA Airbus crashed into a warehouse in Sao Paulo, killing 199 people. There was another crash the year before, a crash which led to a criminal investigation.

The criminal investigation relates to this event: the mid-air collision between a GOL Boeing 737-800 and an Embraer Legacy executive jet last year The Boeing crashed into the Amazon jungle, killing all 154 people onboard. The business jet landed safely.

The International Federation of Airline Pilots’ Associations claims that “The bottom line is they’ve got the cart in front of the horse on this. If they’re serious about improving air safety in Brazil, they’ve got to wait for the (technical) report and swiftly apply any recommendations made by it.”

IFALPA is asking the Brazilian government to suspend the legislative inquiry and the Justice Ministry to adjourn criminal proceedings.”

    CRIMINAL CHARGES

Joseph Lepore of Bay Shore, New York, and Jan Paladino of Westhampton Beach, New York are the Legacy’s two American pilots. Additionally four Brazilian controllers face charges in the criminal case in connection with the accident.

The probe by Brazil’s air accident investigation body has yet to publish its findings.
The pilots’ association claims that “A Federal Police investigation running in parallel with the independent accident investigation … risks obscuring the benefits of a proper investigation.” The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers also criticizes the police probe.

U.S. and Brazilian officials say the Legacy’s transponder and its collision-avoidance system were not functioning at the time of the crash, and that this went unnoticed by its American pilots. However, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration warns that pilots flying Embraer Legacy executive jets can accidentally switch off the transponder when placing their feet on a footrest under the instrument panel. The pilot’s left shoe can touch the switch controlling both instruments and accidentally switch them into “standby” mode.

Flying in the face of Fate

    George’s Point of View

Sometimes heroes do things that are counter-intuitive.
    Police break up riots.
    Soldiers enter battle.
    Firemen run into fires.

Our natures are designed to have the urge to run away from harm. It only makes sense.

There are thrill seekers who defy that urge:
    race car drivers
    parachutists
The Evel Knievils of the world.

Pilots are trained to do whatever is necessary to avoid thunderstorms. Serious storms are taken seriously–especially if routed through the “inter-tropical convergence zone.”

It is counter-intuitive to fly into a storm.

Maybe the storm crept up out of nowhere. Engineers can claim new planes are safely flown into storms but some things that are counter-intuitive are that way for a reason.

We humans are solvers by nature. We like to see what the problem is, analyze it, and fix it. But what we find, while doing our fixing, is that there’s never just one thing wrong.

This is true for any airline event. When is it ever just one thing? It’s not just the rain; the runway is too short. And part of the brakes are down. It’s not just that the pilot is landing on the wrong runway–the runway isn’t long enough, and it’s on a collision course. Plus when there are maintenance issues, they snowball. Maintenance crews get fluids on the engine that burn and send fumes in the cockpit, which causes the crew to have an emergency landing with a fuel-filled plane that stresses the landing gear and explodes the tire, and damages the nose wheel…

    It’s never one thing.

So this time, it looks like it’s turbulence, hail, lightning strike, rapid decompression, storms, and electrical failure in the desolate oragious Atlantic. The controversy will keep going for a long time.

What we decide is futile. Ultimately the only thing you can call a tragedy is a tragedy. This is a tragedy.

  • Watch out for Falling Bottles

    What: easyJet London to Edinburgh
    Where: priority landing in Edinburgh
    When: Thursday
    Who: unwary passenger
Why: unnamed passenger was rushed to hospital but was found to have no serious injuries

    George’s Point of View

So here you are on the plane, minding your own business, and some guy opens an overhead locker and a champagne bottle rolls out and pops you on the head and knocks you out cold. That would hurt. The guy should have yelled “Fore!” or something.

    Can you say “Lawsuit”?
