  • Airbus A320s on 26 flights in AD violation (inspection of the landing gear for cracks)
  • A320 on 17 flights in AD violation (inspection of the landing gear for cracks)
  • Airbus A320 on 855 flights in maintenance violation (engine repair)
  • Boeing 757 on 505 flights in maintenance violation(missed engine work inspections)
  • Boeing 757 on 121 in maintenance violation
  • Boeing 767 on 53 flights without weekly inspection
  • Boeing 767 on 51 flights without inspections, tests and sampling

Pilots Ignore ATC Directions, Hear Audio

On March 11, 2013, an Air Canada Embraer ERJ-190 en route from Edmonton to Toronto,ON was on approach when ATC informed the pilots to abort the landing. Ground radar indicated something moving on the runway. Pilots continued to make the landing, and ignored ATC.

Mechanics working on a Sunwing Boeing had left a van running and in gear, which subsequently rolled without a driver across the runway. At some point, the van impacted the Sunwing 737.

While we can’t make assumptions, apparently the pilots saw the van safely flew over it and made a secure landing.

However, there are a lot of errors here that could have been disaster. We are glad no one was injured. Safety first, everyone!

  • The maintenance crew for failing to secure their vehicle.
  • ATC for not using the call sign, even if it was evident to them who they were speaking to.
  • Pilots for ignoring ATC even if they saw the “threat” because there could have been an additional alert

That said, of course we are glad no one was injured.

US Airways Jet Hits Runway Lights in Charlotte; No Injuries

US AirwaysA US Airways jet, performing flight 1851, hit runway lights while trying to land in Charlotte, North Carolina, on August 15.

Authorities said the Airbus A321 was coming from Atlanta, Georgia, when the pilot reported wind shear. The plane then hit the runway lights while trying to land, damaging the underside of its tail.

There were 153 passengers and 6 crew members aboard at the time; all of them remained unharmed.

The U.S. accident investigators have launched an inquiry into the incident.

Airport Research Program Addresses Industry Problems

The Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) is an industry-driven, applied research program that develops practical solutions to problems faced by airport operators. Funding more than 20 research projects a year, ACRP focuses on research needs that other Federal research programs do not address.

ACRP FY 2011 Synthesis Projects: Letters of Interest Solicitation

TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) is soliciting letters of interest from contractors interested in proposing on upcoming projects. To propose, please send a single pdf file containing a one to two-page letter of interest, a resume providing your qualifications, and a statement that you can comply with the terms of TRB’s contract. Links to additional information on the synthesis process, how to submit a letter of interest through the letters of interest web portal, and a listing of the FY 2011 projects are available on the ACRP Synthesis program website. The deadline for submitting letters of interest and supporting information is March 21, 2011.

What: United Airlines A 320 en route from Denver to Las Vegas
Where: Denver International Airport
When: Jan 3, 2011
Who: 155 passengers, 5 crew
Why: Passengers boarded at 8:30 a.m.

After takeoff, by the time they were 60 miles out, there was a strange smell in the cockpit and cabin which convinced the crew to return to Denver where they made a safe landing. Passengers disembarked with no reported injuries.

JAL Fights going Belly Up

The formerly state-owned Japan Airlines appears to be planning to file for bankruptcy protection in advance of a restructuring of debt. From April to September, JAL lost 1.5 billion dollars and is anticipating additional governmental assistance to the tune of several billion dollars, as well as JAL’s request for several hundred billions worth of loan forgiveness.

Negotiations between Dutch KLM and US Delta indicate possible future alliances.

Look for an official JAL announcement on Jan 19th.
