    Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing Near Eagle County Regional Airport

    A six-seater Cessna Centurion plane made an emergency landing near Eagle County Regional Airport in Gypsum, Colorado, on June 30th.

    The plane flying from Montrose, Colorado, was on approach to the Eagle County airport when its engine failed.

    The pilot subsequently declared an emergency and landed on McGregor road.

    The pilot, who was the only one aboard, remained unharmed.

    Dassault’s Falcon 2000LX Receives Approval for London City Airport (LCY)

    DUBAI, UAE, December 6, 2010 / — Dassault’s Falcon 2000LX recently has been granted approval for arrivals and departures at the challenging London City Airport (LCY) in England. With this approval, European registered Falcon 2000LXs can connect London City, located in the heart of the city of London, nonstop with all of Europe including Moscow. Dassault is currently developing a program to gain FAA steep approach certification which will also allow American registered aircraft to operate at LCY.

    In order to use London City’s short runway (4,327 ft/1,319 m at landing and 3,934 ft/1,199 m at take off), an aircraft must demonstrate exacting performance. To help achieve this, Dassault developed a unique autobrake feature for the Falcon 2000EX and 2000LX that reduces landing distances by as much as 300 feet on steep approaches, which are required for London City. The steep approach procedures require a glide slope of 5.5 degrees as opposed to the standard 3.0 degrees.

    “Flying into London City is not only a challenge for aircraft performance, aircraft are also required to be good neighbors and must abide by strict noise procedures,” said John Rosanvallon, President and CEO of Dassault Falcon. “Meeting these requirements is not an easy task but the convenience of flying into the heart of downtown London is highly valuable for business jet operators.” The Falcon 2000LX noise level was measured in the same category as smaller turboprop.

    The Falcon 2000LX received EASA and FAA certification in April 2009. The 4,000 nm range 2000LX offers the same spacious, quiet interior as the 2000EX EASy but also the capability to serve a more extensive city pairs. It offers a 10 to 15% better climb speed improvement in comparison to the Falcon 2000EX and allows the aircraft to reach 41,000 ft in just 18 minutes. The Falcon 2000LX comes standard with the award-winning EASy flight deck which has won high marks and praise for its integrated features and intuitive displays.
    In 2009, the Falcon 7X was approved to operate at London City Airport for both EASA and FAA registered aircraft. The Falcon 7X offers the longest range of any business jet qualified for London City with nonstop capability to New York. Additionally, the Falcon 900DX/EX, Falcon 50 and Falcon 10 all have London City approval.

    FAA Finalized Fatigue Damage Rule

    Design approval holders must now set a time- or cycle-based limit after which structural damage inspections must take place. The rule specifically addresses widespread fatigue damage (WFD) with the intent of “providing for the establishment of safe operational limits and the maintenance actions necessary to preclude WFD prior to reaching those limits.

    Press Release – FAA Adopts “Comprehensive Solution” to Widespread Fatigue on Aging Aircraft

    WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a continuing effort to address aging aircraft issues, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has finalized a rule designed to protect most of today’s commercial planes and those designed in the future from structural damage as they age.

    The new rule seeks to prevent “widespread fatigue damage” (WFD) by requiring aircraft manufacturers and certification applicants to establish a number of flight cycles or hours a plane can operate and be free from WFD without additional inspections for fatigue. Manufacturers have between 18 and 60 months to comply depending on the particular aircraft type.

    Once manufacturers establish these limits, operators of affected aircraft must incorporate them into their maintenance programs within 30 to 72 months, depending on the model of aircraft. After the limit is in the maintenance program, operators cannot fly the aircraft beyond that point unless the FAA approves an extension of the limit.

    “Safety is our highest priority. This rule provides a comprehensive approach to the problem of widespread fatigue in aging aircraft,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Requiring carriers to regularly inspect their aircraft for possible fatigue is essential to ensuring the highest levels of safety.”

    “We’ve addressed the problem of aging aircraft with numerous targeted regulations and 100 airworthiness directives over the years,” said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt. “This rule is a comprehensive solution to ensure the structural safety of today’s airliners and the airplanes of tomorrow.”

    An airplane’s metallic structures are stressed and can develop cracks when they experience repeated loads such as the pressurization and depressurization that happens on every flight. While airlines regularly inspect aircraft for cracks exceeding a certain size, WFD involves aircraft developing numerous tiny cracks, none of which would have raised concerns individually but which together run the risk of joining up and impairing the structural integrity of the plane.

    The new regulation applies to airliners with a takeoff weight of 75,000 lbs. and heavier. It also applies to all transport designs certificated in the future.

    The affected models, totaling 4,198 U.S.-registered airplanes, are listed in the rule.
    The FAA is working closely with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and other national authorities to harmonize this rule with their regulations as much as possible. EASA is now developing rulemaking to address WFD, and the FAA participates in that process.

    UPS Plane makes Emergency landing in Alaska after Oil Leakage

    UPSUPS flight 5X-63 made a safe emergency landing at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, Anchorage, Alaska, on May 16th.

    The Boeing 747-400, flying from Hong Kong, China, was flying above the Pacific Ocean when the crew notice a slow oil leakage from one of its engines. The crew had to shut the engine down before landing.

    The plane landed safely.

    No one was injured.

    Delta: Whacked Tail at JFK

    What: Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 from New York JFK,NY to Sao Paulo
    Where: New York
    When: Mar 6th 2011
    Why: The Delta Boeing encountered heavy wind on takeoff and suffered a tail strike. The pilot returned to JFK and made a safe landing. According to Flight Aware, the duration of the flight was 49 minutes.

    Small Plane Crashes Off Long Island Coast; 2 Dead, 2 Missing

    A small plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off Amagansett, New York, on June 2nd.

    The incident happened when the Piper PA-31 Navajo plane was carrying four people, including the pilot Jon Dollard, 47, famed Hamptons home builder Ben Krupinski, 70, his wife, Bonnie Bistrian Krupinski, 70, and their grandson, Will Maerov, 22.

    As of June 3rd, only two bodies had been recovered. However, all four occupants of the plane are presumed dead.
