What: Spanair McDonnell Douglas MD-87 en route from Madrid to Valencia Where: Madrid When: Apr 25 2010 Who: 43 passengers Why: After takeoff, the flight developed an issue with the hydraulics. The crew decided to return to Madrid where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided for the passengers.
What: Vueling Airbus A320-200 en route from London to La Coruna Where: London When: Apr 23rd 2010 Why: While en route, the plane indicated low engine oil pressure. The flight landed safely at Heathrow and was cancelled.
What: Vueling Airbus A320-200 en route from Seville to Barcelona Where: Sevilla When: Apr 26 2010 Why: After takeoff, the Vueling Airbus impacted a bird, which was ingested in the right engine. After the crew shut down the affected engine, they made a safe landing at Seville’s San Pablo Airport, where the Airbus was taken out of service for examination, maintenance and repairs. A replacement aircraft was flown in by Vueling for the passengers.
Although both jets involved were Vueling Airbus A320-200, they were different jets, and neither problem had anything to do with volcanic ash.
What: British Airways Boeing 777-200 en route from London to Toronto Where: Toronto When: Apr 25th 2010 Why: Over Toronto, the crew reported an engine problem and had to shut down the right engine. The flight made a safe landing.
The cause has possibly been attributed to a crack in one of the engine’s parts.
What: Jordanian Royal Falcon Boeing 767-200 on behalf of Iraqi Airways en route from Stockholm to Baghdad/ Al Najaf Where: Warsaw When: Apr 25 2010 Why: After one of the cockpit window panes cracked, the plane made a landing in Warsaw. No one was injured.
How the passengers will be finishing their journey has not been published.
What: Air Arabia Airbus A320-200 en route from Sharjah to Chittagong Where: Karachi When: Apr 25 2010 Who: 155 passengers Why: After a smoke detector indicated smoke in the cargo hold, the pilot made a cautionary landing in Karachi. Passengers were accommodated in the airport lounge while the plane was inspected.
The smoke detector later was determined to be faulty.
What: Royal New Zealand Air Force Bell UH-1H Iroquois en route from Ohakea Air Base in Manawatu to Anzac Day commemorations in Wellington Where: 40km NE of Wellington New Zealand When: Apr 25 2010 Who: 4 aboard, 3 fatalities Why: The helicopter crashed in rugged terrain near Pukerua Bay, in fog, killing 3 aboard (Flight Lieutenant Hayden Peter Madsen, pilot, 33; Officer Daniel Stephen Gregory, pilot, 28, and Corporal Benjamin Andrew Carson, helicopter crewman, 25) and injuring one.
What: Pacific East Air Cargo/UPS / ATMA Atyra Transport Antonov AN-12BP en route from Mactan to Angeles Philippines Where: SE of Clark airport, Pampanga province, northern Philippines When: Apr 21 2010 Who: 6 crew Why: Flying low over Mexico village in the Philippines, the cargo plane crashed south east of the base. The crash fragmented the plane, and it burst into flames. Three Russian crew members were hospitalized, 3 other crew members are reported missing. The pilot, who survived, was quoted saying that the plane encountered electric circuit trouble about an hour into the flight, and a fire that broke out forced him to make an emergency landing on the open field.
The Interisland Airlines flight was chartered on behalf of UPS.

The crew shut down the engine to contain the damage and returned to Paris where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided.

Instead of taking off, the plane returned to the gate with a flat tire. Passengers disembarked and were provided alternative transport.
What: Royal Brunei Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from Manila to Bandar Seri Begawan Where: Kota Kinabalu When: Apr 18 2010 Who: 150 people Why: While en route, the flight developed engine trouble. The plane made a safe landing and was able to resume the flight after several hours.
What: South African Express Airways Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Cape Town to Windhoek Where: Windhoek Namibia When: April 17 2010 Why: The SAX CRJ landed with a hung nose wheel. (belly landing?) After landing with nose gear up, there were no injuries although airport operations were disrupted.
What: Small single engine aircraft Where: Monxton, near Andover in Hampshire UK close to the junction of the A303 and A342. When: April 17 2010 Who: 2 aboard Why: In a field near Red Post Lane, a small plane crashed in a field and burst into flames, killing both occupants. The Weyhill Andover crash is said NOT to have been caused by ash but by some other reason.
The AAIB has sent investigators to the scene. The type of craft and the victims names have not been released.
What: Spanish Navy Agusta-Bell 212ASW Where: Fond Verrettes area, about 50km from Port-Au-Prince Haiti When: April 16, 2010 10:30 Who: 4 on board. No survivors. Why: One of a detachment of four Spanish Navy Agusta-Bell 212ASW helicopters assigned to the Spanish navy amphibious ship Castilla crashed in a sparsely populated remote
rugged location called Mount Toro. The helicopter, which is part of an independent detachment is said not to be part of the 400+ Spanish soldiers engaged in Haiti’s recovery and reconstruction efforts, reportedly struck trees and slammed into the ground before catching fire. The rugged terrain is reportedly hampering recovery.

What: AeroUnion Airbus A-300B4-200 en route from Monterrey (Mexico) to Los Angeles,CA Where: Mexico When: April 13th 2010 Who: 2 crew ; 3 on ground fatalities Why: After taking off from Monterrey on a freight flight after 11:00 pm, it is reported that a turbine and wing fell off the plane, and then the Airbus fell out of the sky on to a highway not far from the runway. (Most of the wreckage is on airport property. ) The crew and three individuals on the ground were killed.
What: Slazenger’s single-engine two-seater kit Falco EI BMF landing at Powerscourt private airstrip Where: County Wicklow When: 10 April 2010 Who: pilot Dr Michael Slazenger and passenger Noel Whitney Why: While Slazenger was attempting to land his aircraft at a private airstrip on his Powerscourt estate in Eniskerry, the plane’s wing struck a tree and crashed. Noel Whitney died at the scene, Slazenger died Monday morning.
What: Cathay Pacific Airbus A330-300 en route from from Surabaya Indonesia to Hong Kong Where: Hong Kong When: April 13 2010 Who: 309 passengers and 14 crew Why: On approach to Hong Kong, the flight developed engine failure in one engine which was shut down, and the other engine failed on landing. On the runway, brakes overheated, caught fire, and the tires went flat.
Passengers evacuated the plane via emergency chutes; seven were injured though only five hospitalized. (Other reports indicate 8 admitted to hospital.)
What: Polish Air Force Tupolev TU-154M Where: Smolensk When: Apr 10th 2010 Who: 88 passengers and 8 crew Why: On approach to Smolensk North Airport in dense fog, the plane impacted a forest, coming to rest short of the runway. There are conflicting reports leading up to the decision to land at Smolensk (versus Minsk or Moscow), holding pattern, the number of approaches.
Everyone aboard the flight was lost, including Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria, the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, Olympic Committee head, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers.

What: Anlægsselskabet Dansk Nybyg Piper PA-28-151 Warrior en route from Laesoe island. Where: between Solsbæk and Sæby, North Jutland, Denmark When: April 5 2010 Who: Two were hospitalized; remains of Niels and Bente Birch Nielsen recovered on the scene Why: The 35-year-old Piper PA-28-151 Warrior crashed into trees near Solsbæksvej (Solsbæksroad), between Solsbæk and Sæby, North Jutland. The parents were were killed and the two daughters (17 and 25) were taken to hospital with serious injuries. At the time of the crash, visibility was not good, and according to witnesses, the plane was flying low.
