British Airways flight BA327 made an emergency landing at London Heathrow Airport, England, at around 10:30 P.M. on July 27.
The Airbus A320, en-route from Charles de Gaulle Airport, France, to London Heathrow Airport, England, had to be landed in emergency after the crew detected a “burning smell” in the cockpit.
The plane carrying 163 passengers landed uneventfully and all passengers remained safe.
The cause of smell is under investigation.
Ryanair flight FR-8011 had to abort takeoff at Dublin Airport, Republic of Ireland, on June 3rd.
The Boeing 737-800 was accelerating to takeoff for Warsaw, Poland, when the crew reported they had a flight operations issue.
The plane resumed its flight 20 minutes later.
According to Airbus, A380 wing cracks (“non-critical wing rib-skin attachments on a limited number of A380 aircraft”) are a non-issue because they “do not make the planes unsafe.”
The plan is to use scheduled 4-year maintenance checks called “D-Checks” to screen planes for signs of cracking.
We are just curious if this was a manufacturing error or a design flaw. And even if it is not a safety issue, the idea of just waiting around till a scheduled check seems chancy at best.
WestJet flight WS-4 made an emergency landing at Kangerlussuaq Airport, Greenland, on October 18th.
The Boeing 767-300 plane heading from Gatwick Airport, England, to Toronto, Canada, was diverted after the crew noticed a failure in the avionics bay cooling system.
The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

Why: While en route, one of the plane’s engines developed a problem. The involved engine was shut down and the plane returned safely to Sioux Gateway Airport within fifteen minutes of takeoff. It is standard procedure on a flight, if there is engine trouble with a plane with multiple engines, that the problematic engine is shut down to avoid fires or causing further damage.
The local television station presented video and news of the incident involving a Delta.
However aviation sources including Flight Aware indicate it was a Mesaba Airlines Saab FOR Delta. Which is why I spent half of the afternoon on Flight Aware trying to find a Delta prefix. Special thanks to Simon Hradecky who always gets it right.

What: Northwest/Mesaba Airlines Saab 340B en route from Sioux City to Minneapolis
American Airlines flight AA-5559 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Selma, Alabama, on June 21st.
The plane heading from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, Virginia, was diverted after burning smell was noticed in the cabin and cockpit.
The plane landed safely. There were sixty-five passengers aboard at the time; two of them were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
UVT Aero flight UW-535 had to return and make an emergency landing in Kazan, Russia, on December 1st.
The Canadair CRJ-200 jet took off for Volgograd, Russia, but had to return shortly afterwards after its windshield cracked midair.
The plane landed back safely. All 16 passengers and 2 crew remained unharmed.
