    Swiss International Airlines Flight Returns to Copenhagen due to Engine issue

    swissairSwiss International Airlines flight LX-1267 had to return for an emergency landing in Copenhagen, Denmark, on August 19th.

    The plane took off for Zurich, Switzerland, but had to turn back after its right engine began emitting flames and loud bangs.

    The crew shut down the engine before the plane landed back safely. No injuries were reported.

    Medical Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing in Arizona

    A medical helicopter made an emergency landing in Redington Pass, Arizona, on April 2nd.

    The LifeNet helicopter was carrying four people, including a patient, when it suffered an engine failure.

    The pilot subsequently made a safe landing near mile marker 2 on Redington Road.

    Another helicopter transported the patient to a hospital.

    Shenzhen Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Fire Indication

    Shenzhen AirlinesShenzhen Airlines flight ZH-9638 had to return and make an emergency landing in Shenyang, China, on August 5th.

    The plane took off for Zhengzhou, China, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a fire indication.

    The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained safe.

    Poland: Norwegian Plane hit by Baggage Truck

    What: Norwegian Air Shuttle Boeing 737 scheduled for Gdansk to Gardermoen

    Who: no fatalities, no injuries
    Why: The empty plane was at Gdansk International Airport when it was struck by a baggage vehicle.

    The plane sustained damage and was subsequently taken out of rotation.

    Thomas Cook Emergency Landing in Frankfurt

    What: Thomas Cook Boeing 757 en route from Glasgow to Heraklion
    Where: Frankfurt
    Who: not available
    Why: The flight was en route over Holland when one of the planes engines developed engine failure. The pilot shut down engine two and diverted to Frankfort, where they made a safe landing. Emergency services were on standby when the plane landed.

    Passengers were provided accommodations and flew out the next day, although there was no Thomas Cook affiliate there, and they were not kept informed of their situation.

    NTSB PARTICIPATING IN JAPAN’S INVESTIGATION OF B-787 BATTERY SMOKE EVENT

    A maintenance crew observed a Japan Air Lines Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner at Tokyo-Narita Airport with white smoke coming from the lithium-ion batteries when one of eight cells started leaking. The euphemism used by the media was “venting gas.” No passengers were aboard and the plane was parked undergoing maintenance when it occurred but 158 passengers scheduled to fly on it were provided a different plane.

    The National Transportation Safety Board will participate in the investigation of a smoke event involving the main battery of a Japan Airlines B-787 that occurred while the aircraft was parked at Tokyo’s Narita Airport on Jan. 14.

    The investigation is being led by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau. NTSB aircraft systems investigator Mike Bauer will travel to Japan to assist with the investigation.
