    Why: The United crew was informed that the airport was “uncontrolled” via the advisory frequency. The plane made a visual approach and landed ten minutes after the American Airlines flight

    United Airlines Flight Diverts to McGhee Tyson Airport

    United airlinesUnited Airlines flight 4343 made an emergency landing at McGhee Tyson Airport in Blount County, Tennessee, on April 27th.

    The plane heading from Knoxville, Tennessee, to Washington Dulles International Airport, Virginia, was diverted after an indicator light came on in the cockpit.

    The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained safe.

    Germania Flug Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Egypt

    Germania Flug flight GM-3023 had to return and make an emergency landing in Hurghada, Egypt, on March 4th.

    The Airbus A319-100 plane took off for Zurich, Switzerland, but had to turn back due to issues with one of the engine computers.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Airbus Loses Cowling

    What: Jetblue Airbus A320-200 en route from Newark to Fort Lauderdale
    Where: Newark Liberty International Airport
    When: Apr 5th 2010
    Who: 134 passengers
    Why: During takeoff, the airbus lost the left engine cowling.

    Distressed panicked passengers smelled smoke and said they could see inside the engine.

    Less than a quarter of an hour later, it had landed back at the airport, where the fallen parts had to be gathered.

    The NY Daily news reported that passengers were offered refunds and a free round trip.

    What: TAM Linhas Aereas Airbus A320-200 en route from Brasilia to Sao Paulo
    Where: Sao Paulo
    When: June 24 2010
    Who: 171 people on board
    Why: On approach to Congonhas, the pilot was notified of a flight leaving Congonhas, and had to maneuver according to ATC direction, then continued on to land at Congonhas. Meanwhile, one of the flight attendants landed on a passenger. No one was injured in either event.

    The plane causing the evasive maneuver was an Embraer EMB-110 Bandeirante.

    Virgin Australia Fuel Imbalance Lands Team in Brisbane

    What: Virgin Australia Boeing 737-800 en route from Coolangatta/Gold Coast,QL to Melbourne,VI
    Where: Coolangatta
    When: Apr 15th 2012
    Who: Essendon Football Team
    Why: The flight was en route when a problem developed with the fuel. Pilots diverted to Brisbane and made a safe landing. Emergency services met the plane on the tarmac. Virgin’s public statement said the problem was a minor maintenance issue.

    The football team won against the Gold Coast Suns on Saturday night but ended up stranded in Brisbane. The spokesman for Essedon said “There was definitely no emergency. It’s probably been overplayed a bit.”

    The flight was cancelled.
