On July 5, 2013 around 4 pm, a Heartland Transmission Project helicopter transporting equipment to a tower crashed near Fort Saskatchewan. When the helicopter grazed the 64 metre tower, the pilot lost control.
One report says a worker fell from the helicopter but this has not been confirmed.
Two men were aboard; they were both taken to University of Alberta hospital in serious condition. The lineman was airlifted.
Transportation Safety Board and Alberta Occupational Health and Safety will be investigating, as well as the Heartland Transmission.Project.

On July 29. 2013, a Mir Aero Eurocopter EC 130 (AS 350 B4) with 6 aboard was en route.
It crashed in Taureni Lake, Mures County, Romania. Four bodies were found initially; the fifth, Sorin Terbea was found by divers. Sorin Terbea is a wealthy businessman. The woman, Terbea’s company’s marketing director who was engaged to Terbea was rescued by witnesses at the lake. She is reported to be the only survivor. Two German citizens and their child were also aboard.
The Romanian Police forensic team was sent to Mures to coordinate investigation launched after the tragedy.
A two-seater American Super Decathlon aircraft crashed in a cornfield in Leflore County about 4 miles west of Greenwood, Mississippi, at around 7 p.m. on August 16.
Two Leflore County men, 71 year-old Grady Perkins of Greenwood, and 44 year-old Matt Weldon of Sidon, survived with injuries. They were airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
According to Perkins’ wife, he was a licensed pilot and was giving flying lessons to Weldon. They were practicing emergency landings when the single-engine plane lost power and went down.
Weldon, who suffered severe but non life-threatening injuries, managed to call 911. Ambulances and Leflore County sheriff’s deputies located the airplane in time to save them.
The plane is registered to Steve Jennings according to FAA records.
The FAA is investigating the crash.

A privately-owned Cessna airplane hit a tree and crashed in a wooded area off the 16200 block of Branscomb Road, west of Laytonville, Mendocino County in California, at around 7:30 p.m. on June 5.
The pilot, identified as Kenneth Gillespie, 63, of Laytonville, died on the spot.
According to Laytonville Volunteer Fire Chief Jim Little, “It was not a survivable crash.”
The crash happened on a gravel bar on the Eel River, near a private airstrip. Responders waded through the shallow water to recover the body of the victim.
Mendocino County Sheriff’s Lt. Kirk Mason said that the owner of the private airstrip reported the incident and described Gillespie as his friend.
Representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have started investigating the crash. Laytonville Fire, Cal Fire, the CHP and the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

What: Superlight Cheetah S200 glider Where: Canberra New South Wales When: October 1 Who: 2 aboard. Why: During the annual three-day festival in Old Bar, a glider crashed into a ferris wheel. (What are the odds of that?) A nine year old and a thirteen year old were trapped, as well as the pilot (Paul Cox) and passenger of the downed plane. The pilot was disoriented in low visibility. The children were stuck for an hour; the pilot and passenger for three hours. No one had serious injuries.

What: Paul P. Dudley Bell 206B JetRanger Where: East River, New York, NY When: Oct 4, 2011 Who: 5 aboard, 1 fatality Why: The Bell 206B JetRanger was en route with five people aboard when it took off to about 25 feet above ground, and spun, then crashed for an unknown reason upside down into the East River. The flight had just taken off from the riverbank launch pad. Two people were injured, one was missing. Four individuals were rescued from the water, including the pilot. While the helicopter was submerged, rescuers searched for the fifth passenger, Sonia Marra Nicholson, but did not find her until it was too late. The chopper had sunk 50 feet into the water. Nicholson had been visiting New York on the occasion of her 40th birthday.
THe passengers who were rescued were Nicholson’s partner Helen Tamaski, her mother Harriet Nicholson and her stepfather Paul Nicholson, all of whom are in stable condition at Bellevue and New York University Hospitals. Paul and Harriet Nicholson live in Portugal but are British citizens. Sonia Marra Nicholson and Helen Tamaski lived in Australia.
The pilot Paul Dudley also survived. The passengers were close personal friends. He manages the Linden, N.J., airport.
Rescuers included police officers who where on hand, running a drill on the East River, and who, still in uniform, jumped in to assist passengers.
