What: Azul Linhas Aereas Avion de Transport Regional ATR-72-100 en route from Sao Jose do Rio Preto to Campinas
Where: Sao Jose do Rio reto, Brazil
When: Sep 24th 2011
Who: 67 aboard
Why: The pilot was on the runway for takeoff and rejected takeoff due to birds on the runway, which resulted in a brake fire.

Emergency services put out the fire. Passengers were evacuated, resulting in one injured passenger.

Passengers were booked on alternative flights.

    Azul Linhas Aereas Plane makes Safe Landing in Brazil after Smoke in Cabin

    Azul Linhas Aereas flight AD-4966 made a safe emergency landing at Aeroporto de Uberlândia – Tenente Coronel Aviador César Bombonato, Brazil, on May 9th.

    The Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A flying from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was about to reach the destination when crew noticed smoke in its cabin.

    The plane landed safely.

    No injuries were reported.

  • Brazil’s Defense Minister Ousted

    President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva fired his defense minister heeding calls for the removal of top aviation officials after nearly 200 people were killed last week.

    Waldir Pires was forced out as defense minister. Nelson Jobim, a retired Supreme Court judge and former justice minister with close ties to Lula, replaced Pires.

    Lula, who has been criticized for being slow in reacting to crises.

    Jobim told reporters after taking office that he would decide by the weekend whether to replace officials at the airports authority, Infraero.

    Jobim will have free rein to do what it takes to fix the ailing aviation system.

    “We are going to do what has to be done … and spend what has to be spent,” the president said at Jobim’s swearing-in ceremony.

    Yet airport chaos continues.

    Air traffic controllers have held work slowdowns to protest outdated radar and radio equipment and poor salaries.

    The crisis deepened when the radar outage forced flights to change course, causing delays. Weather and a runway problem in Sao Paulo have added to the woe.

    More than half of all flights in the country were delayed or canceled on Wednesday for the fourth straight day.

    To reduce the delays and cancellations, Brazil’s aviation authority temporarily suspended ticket sales for flights to and from Congonha.

    SAS Scandinavian Airlines Emergency Landing

    What: SAS Scandinavian Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route from Las Palmas to Stavanger
    Where: Las Palmas Spain
    When: Mar 13th 2010
    Who: 114 passengers
    Why: While en route, the plane developed a technical problem. The flight diverted to Madrid, where the plane landed safely. Passengers disembarked without any problem, and were booked on an alternative flight the next day.

    Helicopter Crash, Saltillo Mexico

    What: RCG Radio y Television Saltillo Bell 206
    Where: Saltillo, Coahuila Mexico
    When: October 30 2009
    Who: 4 on board, three of them seriously injured.
    Why: Apparently the plane crashed due to a short circuit in the rotor, hit a roof and burst into flame. Individuals inside were evacuated. So far, no fatalities have been reported.

    Alaska Airlines Bird Strike

    What: Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route from Sacramento to Kahului
    Where: Sacramento
    When: April 9, 2011, 10:20am
    Who: 169 passengers
    Why: After takeoff from Sacramento, a bird was ingested into the plane’s engine, causing engine trouble. The flight returned to Sacramento where it made a safe landing. A replacement flight was scheduled for the afternoon.

    Recent bird include the Skywest/Delta Canadair CRJ 700 (Portland-Salt Lake City) strike on April 6 2011, the GOL Linhas Aereas Boeing 737-800 (Salvador-Aracaju) strike on April 3, and the Air France Boeing 777 strike in Paris (Paris-HongKong) on Mar 24.

    Bolivia: Cessna 210 fatality

    Where: Concepcion, Bolivia
    When: April 11, 2009
    Who: Pilot and 3 passengers
    Why: The cessna impacted terrain shortly after taking off from Concepcion Airport Concepcion, Bolivia.

    The certificated commercial pilot and three passengers, all Bolivian citizens, were fatally injured. Night visual conditions prevailed. The flight was operating on a visual flight rules flight plan from Concepcion to El Trompillo Airport (SLET), Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
