    SEATTLE, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — The Boeing (NYSE: BA) 787 Dreamliner took to the sky for the first time today, ushering a new era in air travel as it departed before an estimated crowd of more than 12,000 employees and guests from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. The flight marks the beginning of a flight test program that will see six airplanes flying nearly around the clock and around the globe, with the airplane’s first delivery scheduled for fourth quarter 2010.

    The newest member of the Boeing family of commercial jetliners took off from Paine Field in Everett, Wash. at 10:27 a.m. local time. After approximately three hours, it landed at 1:33 p.m. at Seattle’s Boeing Field.

    787 Chief Pilot Mike Carriker and Capt. Randy Neville tested some of the airplane’s systems and structures, as on-board equipment recorded and transmitted real-time data to a flight-test team at Boeing Field.

    After takeoff from Everett, the airplane followed a route over the east end of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Capts. Carriker and Neville took the airplane to an altitude of 15,000 feet (4,572 meters) and an air speed of 180 knots, or about 207 miles (333 kilometers) per hour, customary on a first flight.

    Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, the first Boeing 787 will be joined in the flight test program in the coming weeks and months by five other 787s, including two that will be powered by General Electric GEnx engines.
    The 787 Dreamliner will offer passengers a better flying experience and provide airline operators greater efficiency to better serve the point-to-point routes and additional frequencies passengers prefer. The technologically-advanced 787 will use 20 percent less fuel than today’s airplanes of comparable size, provide airlines with up to 45 percent more cargo revenue capacity and present passengers with innovations that include a new interior environment with cleaner air, larger windows, more stowage space, improved lighting and other passenger-preferred conveniences.

    Fifty-five customers around the world have ordered 840 787s, making the 787 Dreamliner the fastest-selling new commercial jetliner in history.

    Southwest Airlines Announces 20 Firm Boeing 737-800 Deliveries in 2012

    Today, Gary Kelly, Southwest Airlines Chairman, President, and CEO spoke at the Wings Club in New York City and shared additional details on introducing the Boeing 737-800 to the Southwest fleet.

    Kelly announced the Company will substitute 20 of its 737-700 orders for -800s, with the first delivery scheduled for March 2012. With both its Pilots’ and Flight Attendants’ Unions ratifying their contracts to add the -800 to their current collective bargaining agreements, the Company is continuing to finalize discussions with the Boeing Company regarding substitutions of the -800s for the -700 positions, and configuration and equipage options.

    NTSB SAYS NORTHWEST PILOTS’ DISTRACTION LED TO
    OVERFLIGHT OF MINNEAPOLIS, NOTES ATC SHORTCOMINGS; ISSUES
    RECOMMENDATIONS ON ATC PROCEDURES

    The National Transportation Safety Board has determined that
    Northwest Airlines flight 188 overflew its destination
    airport of Minneapolis by more than 100 miles and failed to
    maintain radio communications because the pilots became
    distracted by a conversation unrelated to the operation of
    the aircraft. The NTSB’s accident brief, released today,
    also note air traffic control shortcomings during the event,
    and the Board issued two safety recommendations to address
    those shortcomings.

    On October 21, 2009, Northwest Airlines flight 188, an
    Airbus A320 (N374NW) operating as a scheduled flight between
    San Diego and Minneapolis, did not communicate with air
    traffic control for approximately one hour 17 minutes.
    While in this NORDO (no radio communications) state, it flew
    past its intended destination at a cruise altitude of 37,000
    feet. The crew subsequently re-established radio
    communications and landed without further incident. There
    were no injuries.

    The NTSB said that the pilots continued to fly through
    several air traffic control sectors without replying to any
    radio commands. The investigation found that the pilots had
    become engaged in a conversation dealing with the process by
    which pilots request flight schedules and during the
    conversation each was using his personal laptop computer,
    contrary to company policy. The pilots were not aware of
    the repeated attempts by air traffic controllers’ and the
    airline to contact them until a flight attendant used the
    intercom to inquire about the progress of the flight.

    The NTSB also found that the lack of national requirements
    for recording ATC instructions when using automated flight
    tracking systems, such as directing an aircraft to switch
    frequencies or to indicate that an aircraft has checked in
    on an assigned frequency, was a factor in the controllers
    delay in performing necessary actions and notifications
    required by lost communications procedures. In addition,
    because NORDO events of a short duration are not uncommon,
    the Safety Board found that controllers and managers may
    have become complacent in completing necessary NORDO actions
    and required notifications in a timely manner.

    As a result of deficiencies in ATC communications procedures
    revealed in this investigation and an accident involving a
    Pilatus PC-12/45 that crashed in Butte, Montana on March 22,
    2009, the Safety Board is making recommendations to the FAA
    to address the following issues:
    · The lack of standard procedures for identifying flight
    crew-ATC communications in ATC facilities that use
    automated flight tracking systems.
    · The lack of standard phraseology for identifying the
    emergency nature of emergency ATC radio
    transmissions.

    Previously, the Safety Board has addressed the potential
    hazards created by the use of personal electronic devices by
    transportation operators. Last month, following the Board’s
    investigation of the Colgan Air 3407 accident near Buffalo,
    NY, the Board issued a safety recommendation to the FAA to
    require all Part 121, 135, and 91K operators to incorporate
    explicit guidance to pilots, including checklist reminders
    as appropriate, prohibiting the use of personal portable
    electronic devices on the flight deck. Details of Safety

    Recent accidents and incidents such as the midair collision
    over the Hudson River last August, Colgan Air flight 3407,
    and the Northwest pilot’s overflight of the Minnesota
    airport have demonstrated the clear hazards to aviation
    safety when pilots and air traffic controllers depart from
    standard operating procedures and established best
    practices.

    The Safety Board will convene a 3-day public forum on
    professionalism in aviation to address methods for ensuring
    excellence in pilot and air traffic controller performance.
    The forum is intended to raise awareness by promoting an
    open discussion between the Safety Board and invited
    panelists drawn from industry, labor, academia, and
    government on the importance of developing and reinforcing
    professionalism in the aviation industry. The forum is
    scheduled for May 18-20, 2010. More information regarding
    the forum will be announced in the coming weeks.

    Goodrich Hosts Rescue Hoist Users Conference

    CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 2, 2011– Goodrich Corporation’s Sensors and Integrated Systems business will present its tenth annual Rescue Hoist Users Conference along with a special maintenance training session, March 3-4, 2011, immediately prior to the HAI HELI-EXPO(R) trade show in Orlando, Fla.

    Boeing Contribution to Shuttle Mission Includes Troubleshooting, Payload Prep

    KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla., April 2, 2010 — The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] has been providing NASA with a wide variety of hardware and services — including troubleshooting a stuck valve — to ensure Space Shuttle Discovery launches as scheduled on April 5.

    One of two helium isolation valves in the shuttle’s starboard Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) pod failed in the open position on March 13 during helium tank preparations prior to OMS pod propellant loading. High-pressure helium is used to push propellants from storage tanks into small rocket motors used for routine orbital maneuvers.

    “As the original equipment manufacturer for the space shuttle and a major subcontractor on the program, Boeing engineers were a part of a NASA-led problem resolution team that analyzed the complex data and provided recommendations,” said John Mulholland, Boeing Space Shuttle Program vice president and program manager. “The team concluded that given the redundancy in the system, the space shuttle is safe to fly with the valve in this configuration.”

    Shuttle mission STS-131 will transport four experiment racks to the International Space Station (ISS), along with one systems rack, seven resupply stowage platforms, and four resupply stowage racks. Boeing engineers in Huntsville, Ala., designed and built two of the four experiment racks — the Expedite the Processing of Experiments to Space Station (EXPRESS) Rack 7 and the Window Observational Research Facility (WORF).

    EXPRESS Rack 7 is a multipurpose payload rack system that will store and support science experiments aboard the ISS. Experiments can be easily integrated into the system, which includes structural interfaces, power, command/data, video, cooling, nitrogen, vacuum exhaust, and other items needed to operate experiments in space.
    The WORF fits over the U.S. Destiny lab window and will maximize the use of the window via attachments for cameras, camcorders, and other instruments to capture imagery of the Earth and space.

    The mission also will deliver an Ammonia Tank Assembly (ATA) that Boeing refurbished at Kennedy Space Center. The ATA works in conjunction with the station’s External Active Thermal Control System to help cool the exterior and interior components of the ISS.

    The Boeing Checkout, Assembly and Payload Processing Services (CAPPS) team prepared the entire mission payload for launch. The services and support Boeing provides under its CAPPS contract include planning for and receiving payloads, maintaining associated ground support systems, integrating payloads with the space shuttle, launch support, and space shuttle post-landing payload activities.
    Boeing is the prime contractor to NASA for the ISS. In addition to designing and building all the major U.S. elements, Boeing also is responsible for ensuring the successful integration of new hardware and software — including components from international partners — as well as for providing sustaining engineering work for the ISS.
