New Wake Turbulence Technology Makes Microbursts Visible
A new system generates real time acoustic technology images of transient aircraft wake turbulence in detail; and the system has been in use at Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport for two years. The system uses acoustic technique to measure sudden downdrafts or micro-bursts, and cells of air turbulence in a plane’s wake. The technology provides accurate visible measures of transient heretofore invisible forces.
The impetus behind the technology is to translate severe wake turbulence and wind shear events in real time to high definition to advance aviation safety and airport efficiency. The patented aircraft wake and wind-shear mapping technology is being developed and is owned by the Sondei Group
Drunken United Airlines Pilot Charged
LONDON–51-year-old pilot Erwin Vermont Washington pleaded guilty today for being above the alcohol limit for flying a plane. United has removed him from duty. He was pulled from London-Chicago Flight 949 (Boeing 767) in November. He scored a 31 micrograms of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath. The blood test indicated 50 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood. The limit for pilots is 20 milligrams.(for a car it is 80 milligrams.)
Washington was tried in Uxbridge Magistrates Court near London and has been released on bail. For pilots being over the legal limit for flying, the maximum sentence is two years in jail and a fine.
Sentencing will be Feb. 5.
DGCA Punishes Rogue Check Pilot
Remember that check pilot we wrote about yesterday? The one who yanked off a circuit breaker to test the pilot?
He’s being “tested” now, by Airline regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). In fact, the Jet Airways senior pilot who pulled the circuit breaker stunt is now suspended.
The pilots had no way to tell how close they were to the ground. Luckily they landed safely.
Ironically, the injured parties (the commander and co-pilot) have also been derostered.
Pilot exercises are supposed to be performed in a simulator, not in a full plane engaging in a commercial flight.
