Lajes Site of Oil Leak Diversion

I was on a pilot talk forum and saw that a US Airways Flight 799, a B757 200 from AMS to PHL (that’s Amsterdam to Philadelphia) sprung a leak and diverted to Lajes on the 26th or 27th.

Lajes in the Azores. Tourists there. Also an airbase.

OF all the places in the world to get stranded, imagine getting stranded in Lajes.

Apparently after the passengers were picked up the next day, their replacement flight was diverted too.
I wonder how much the passengers will want the compensation package that will be offered to them (probably free tickets for more US Airways flights…)

US Airways Emergency lands with failed landing gear

A parade of emergency services met the Dash 8 as it ground to a stop in a shower of sparks after a dramatic belly landing. On May 18, 2013, a US Airways/Piedmont Airlines Dash 8-100 turboprop en route from Philadelphia to Newark was landing in Newark when the left main landing gear failed to deploy. At the last minute, pilot Edward Powers went gear up, landing in a blaze of fire from belly-landing-friction, till it came to rest in the dark. No one was injured.

There were 3 crew and 34 passengers aboard.

After landing at 1 a.m. after the pilot had circled to burn off fuel, the passengers disembarked, and were bussed to the terminal. The plane was foamed to prevent sparks from igniting.

Hysterical passengers reported the pilot announcing “crash crash crash,” calling home for last goodbyes, the jolt and grind of impacting the runway, and the cabin filling with smoke as it landed.

The plane made a belly landing, which means without wheels. A sixteen person team of emergency services responded to the scene

Jump Seat Fake pilot arrested on US Airways flight

Philippe Jernnard was wearing an Air France shirt, a fake Air France badge, had an Air France bag and was carrying a falsified an Air France ID card when he boarded a US Airways Philadelphia-West Palm Beach flight.

Instead of taking his seat in coach, he asked if there was room in first class, then seated himself on the cockpit’s jump seat.

The impersonation attempt began after Jernnard was denied an upgrade to business class.

When the captain told Jernnard he hadn’t filled out the paperwork and had to return to his seat, Jernnard argued.

The argument led to authorities being called, and they took him into custody.

He is charged with criminal trespass, tampering with records, impersonating a person privately employed and false ID to law enforcement. Jernnard is a French citizen.

WASHINGTON – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing a $354,500 civil penalty against US Airways, Inc., of Phoenix, for operating a Boeing 757 airliner on 916 revenue flights when it was not in compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations.

Medicated Sleepwalker Mistakes Exit Door for Bathroom

Contact photographer

What: US Airways/ Air Wisconsin Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Portland Maine to Philadelphia
Where: Boston
When: May 10th 2012
Who: 50 passengers and 3 crew
Why: A passenger with a history of seizures and on medication attempted to open the door while en route.

The disruptive passenger was caught by a flight attendant, who stopped him. He told her he was going to the bathroom. The attendant led him to a seat in the rear of the plane where state police found him. Other passengers may have been upset or frightened by the incident, but under normal conditions, it’s not physically possible to open the door while in flight anyway.

Pilots diverted the flight to Boston where the disruptive passenger was offloaded, presumably by gentlemen in white coats.

Michael Ensalaco, 40, of Mooresville, N.C was charged with interfering with a flight crew. His lawyer explained that his seizure disorder is similar to sleep walking.

In George’s Point of View

While a medical event should not be handled in the same way as a malicious act, perhaps someone with this tendency should not fly, or else they should not sleep during the flight, and also be obligated to inform the flight crew ahead of time. It could happen to anyone taking Ambien!

Foul Bleed Air Cancels Flight

What: US Airways Airbus A320-200 en route from Philadelphia,PA to Las Vegas
Where: Philadelphia
When: Dec 7th 2011
Why: After taking off from Philadelphia, those aboard noticed what was described as “the stench of dirty socks.” The plane returned to Philadelphia and made a safe landing. Passengers were provided an alternative flight.

Note that in spite of the uncharming description of the smell, the caution was due not to excessive fear of stinky feet but to caution over the kind of lawsuit that Boeing is dealing with right now over toxic air fumes from tricresyl phosphates (TCPs), carbon monoxide and other toxic components bleeding from faulty “bleed-air” systems. Drowsiness, disorientation and memory loss may occur as a result of exposure to aerotoxicity.
